I recently replaced my G710s with G730s, so still firmly in the "G-Man" camp!

I curious if anyone has tried the set 56* wedge from either the G730s or G440s? If so, I'm curious to know how you like the club.

So far, my local Golf Galaxy doesn't have either one, so I have not been able to see the club in person.

I bought a set of 440's to mess around with. They are still a GI iron, however, they are better than past models in terms of sound and feel. They still come off like rockets and fly high. The best I can describe is like they turned the volume down from 10 to 6. They don't sound hollow tingy, they feel dull cracky. These little hot pockets still give you everything a G iron did and better, but with a more 'player' feel and look.

For those that upgraded recently to the G440 irons, did ping truly improve the feel as much as the online reviews are reporting?

Gents,

Just sold my Ping G710's yesterday and went to my local golf shop and hit the Ping G730 and Ping G440 outside.  Both felt great and decided to go to fit at one of the better places in the Mid-West on Monday.  I cant wait to see what I end up going with.  The Ping G730 was crazy long and seem really easy to hit.  The Ping G440's felt pretty good and were just a few yards shorter than the Ping G730's so I am excited to see what I end up going with.

Now I am just worried how long it will take Ping to ship me these new irons 😞

Looks like you love your Ping's, nothing wrong with that. Is there a difference in Lofts in the G730's to G440's that made you hit the G730's longer?

Yeah the Ping G730's are lofted stronger so no real surprise there.  The Ping G440 are also long and are lofted stronger than the G710s I just sold.  I had Recoil Shafts in my Ping G710s and want to try both graphite and steal shafts in stiff.  Im 44 but hoping that the graphite give me the best results

Last year I was ready to order a set of the Ping i230's and a friend suggest that I look at the Mizuno JPX 923 HL and I'm glad that I did. Same lofts as Ping i230 with the Power Spec lofts and I got the Recoil shafts which I love. Another thing is the JPX's were all D2 swing weight with the Recoils.  Before I had a set of Ping G425's with graphite and the swing weight was a C-9. But Im a lot older than you.

Pulled the Trigger on the Ping G730 Irons last night.  I went 6,7,8,9,PW,GW, 50, 56 and also purchased the Ping BunkR Wedge 🙂

I used to play the Ping G710 irons in recoil graphite stiff shafts and upgraded to the Ping G730 Ping Ulta Graphite Shafts in stiff.  The G730's are about 5-8 yards longer and appear to be more forgiving.  Excited to get them out on the course

Did you get the same shaft in the BunkR to?

  • 2 weeks later...

I'll chime in: bought some G430s from CPO to see what a G-man was all about. Grew up playing G2 irons, & have had success with the likes of some players/players-distance models of the last few years. Last year, iron game had struggled though so I wanted to "come home" and see how the most forgiving iron I could stand to look at would treat me this year.

Only minimal range time so far this year, but man do these things have some pop to them... Still loosening up the swing in the midwest here, but I've been impressed at the forgiveness on bad strikes. Still seeing plenty of height and ~85-90% of distance on less than stellar swings. But a flushed shot truly looks spectacular... towering height, tons of distance. They're about 1-club longer than the King Tours I was playing last year, which makes sense due to lofts, but the Ping's height/descent angle more than makes up for loft jacking/spin reduction, in my experience.

The one odd thing is that 5-PW leaves a gap in between the 41* set wedge and my 50*, so I bought an i210 PW to slot in. It works for my bag w/o having to crowd out another club at the top end, but if I were somebody who liked to play more than 2 woods/hybrids, I'd have to make some decisions there. G440s seem to have figured out that gap, however.

Bottom line, though, is that I'm curious to compare my approach game this year vs. year's past. With the G-series, I now have 5 short irons/wedges all within a 35.25" - 36" of playing length that cover the gap from ~95-160y. Cruising from 150y+ with a 9i this year, I'm guessing, will feel very different from having to step on an 8i or taking a 7i down a notch.

With our crappy OH weather I still haven't had a chance to play outside yet.  But my last two sim rounds were on a course with alot of elevation change called Mammoth Dunes.

The G440 irons and set wedges have been really solid.

Hit every green the last two sim rds:

7/7 GIR

7i 148 bird
Pw 123 par
8i 141 bird
7i Par 3 152 par
Pw Par 3 121 par
8i Par 3 141 par
7i 144 par

10/10 GIR
127 - 9i - par
124 - 9i - par
135 - 8i - par
154 - 7i - par
115 - pw - bogey (outside 20’ 2 putt ring)
148 - 7i - bird (4’)
122 - pw - par
141 - 8i - bogey (outside 20’ 2 putt ring).

I forgot to mention above that the 440s in retro spec these are carrying almost 1/2-full club longer than the 925HL irons they replaced.  The only downside so far is that the 6i even in retro is just not consistent enough for me.  I have been testing a Mizuno ST-Max 6h which is 28* and I have it set to 30*.  its been really solid and puts up better numbers (more spin and descent angle) than the 440 6i.  I think the 6i would be ok on the course, but the hybrid is a GC Quad darling with the #'s its putting up.

So for right now starting the season the hybrid will go in the bag and the 6i will stay on the sideline.  more testing to come with that

GOLF64. I’m  considering the G440 irons.  I have been playing Ping irons/fairway/hybrids/putters for decades.

A couple of questions…what loft options are your new irons?  What is the gapping in your irons, or are you using the standard gapping?  I currently play the G430 irons with custom gapping because of the strand gapping in the wedge clubs.  I play sr. shafts in graphite.

Your bag looks great…hope you have a great golf season.

Unfortunately I have not been able to play with my new sticks this year. Still not warm enough to play for me. I have played a couple of rounds of sim golf and I am loving the look and feel of these new sticks! They are on par with my normal yardages when playing in the sim. I am a low ball hitter, so I went with retro spec. on the irons with reg. graphites. They go high, which I am loving! Can't wait to get these outside!! Hopefully by the end of April it will warm up?!

I have about a dozen rounds on my 430's. Happy with them so far. My high lofted wedges are 54 and 58 so the 430's with a standard 50* UW slot nicely.

If one has 52 and 56 degree wedges and wants to stick with them, then the 440's make more sense to me since the UW is 47.5*. In doing so, they also got rid of the 45* wedge that was standard in the 430's.

(And completely subjective of course, but the 430's look better to me. The 440's almost look a little feminine.)

Curious- what is the wedge set up after your G pw? What say the G-Men? It may be time to retire my Eye2+ S and L.

I have the 440’s in retro specs.
I have the 6i but leaning towards a Mizuno 6h instead lofted to 30*. Puts up better numbers than the 28* 6i Then I’ll start with 7i which is 31* and they the retro PW is 42.5* and retro UW is 47.5*. Then I go 56* and 60* CBX full face 2 wedges.  Then a BunkR at 64*.

they gap off pretty well

pw is 115 carry   Can stretch it to 120

Uw is 105 carry. Can stretch it to 110.

56* is 85 yds

60* is 75 yds

bunkR is 60 yds

I forgot to add. I could probably add the g440 52* which would be like a 95-100 yd club but I’m not sure which club I’d replace to add it.

I hope I can still keep my G-man status even though I found a really nice set of Ping Eye2 becu's and they are now in the bag. My G25's aren't going anywhere this time though.
