Need your opinion please

Need your fitting suggestions on my swinging target line left shots. Me, a 12hc, up from a 9 and trending the wrong way. PW through 6 iron impacted, 5&4 irons ok. In the process of a swing change with the pro [lessons good but no so great on fitting]. MP 53 1* up, 1/2" long. Just switched from KBS TS to Aerotech 95 regular, late 60's but before you bury me, work off a 152yd carry 8 iron. And the issue was also with the KBS's

 

The wear pattern is 3/4" towards toe and up just above center by a 1/4". Nice big quarter size spot. Interesting divots tend to be heavy toe but the lessons are helping that but the results are the same. I have gone from a strong to a neutral grip.

 

The issue is killing my scoring shots. I ask because I am going to go to a club fitter and have it addressed. I just would like to be somewhat educated by all of your experience before I get involved with someone I don't know, just moved 2 states warmer so no known people.

 

Again the lessons are helping the swing and the results of the woods are amazingingly straight and long. Just can't seem to figure out the scoring irons and the pro has helped correct a bit of it but feels its the weapon also.

Just to clarify, you are suffering with a pull / pull hook with everything 6 iron down?

It sounds like you're coming across the ball and into it very steeply. Is the teacher trying to help you with a OTT downswing by any chance?

Fitting/modifying equipment to a swing "characteristic/flaw" can be done as long as the swing is repeatable. If it is not repeatable, then fitting/modifying can make bad worse but can rarely make good better.

Fitting a fellow one time and he said he had been working with a teacher on his swing thus he showed me his old swing then his new swing. Asked me what I thought. I replied which swing do you want me to fit you to?

No question OTT could be the issue and in some case was/is. The new "move" is not though. And it still does it. The pro and I discussed whether is was the swing or the arrow. No clear winner. We tracked the divots and they right down the intended line. Just toe deeper.
The answer to " everything 6 iron down?" is yes. One thing we discussed was the change in shaft weight [kbs tour S to Aerotech 95 reg]. No difinitive answer. Per Pro, when swing is right and it still goes left but not as severely and the alignment is correct.

I wish it was a simple OTT/alignment/grip thing but its not. I am going to a fitter but just need to have a bit of a clue first.

IMO there are more subtle swing faults than OTT which can have a big impact. I assume that to this point you don't have any launch monitor data, I think it would be useful in helping identiifying the problem. Obviously the path is slightly left and the face is square or slightly closed to the path.

Possible causes are:
Over rotating the hips on the downswing, this can drag the path left a little.
high hands at impact, this can also cause the toe impacts you have been experiencing.
Insufficient foward shaft lean at impact, sometime a bit of flipping at the bottom can leave the face closed as does excessive rolling of the wrists at impact.
Ball position is an obvious one, the further foward the more likelyhood the path will be moving left.

Mark Crossfield has a good impact position drill on a few of his vidoes, that you should try. The drill requires closing the clubface severly (20 degrees ) then gripping the club, the goal is to not hit the ball left, swing the club but get the hands sufficiently foward (forward shaft lean at impact) of the shaft at impact to prevent the hook that would happen naturally.

You are going to address any possible equipment issues but my guess is this is mainly a swing issue rather than a major equipment problem.

Keep working on it and you will get it sorted.

Thanks for the info and suggestions. Again to clarify a bit better. Using alignment sticks, the divots appear to be completely parallel to the stick in a normal depth. The key for the prior sentence is "most of the time". DaveMac, great videos by Crossfield, I do want to try the drill to keep the sometimes present, flip under control.
