I actually think he's talking about Kaymer or Westwood.

Kaymer "prefers to use the putter" as well.
kaymer came to mind with me as well....either yesterday or todays round in turkey he had that putter out again around the green. guys just play to their strengths, which could very well disguise yips if using another club
Kaymer holed a chip in front of me on the 16th on Sunday at the Ryder Cup for an eagle and a win over Bubba… if that's his weakness then he must be pretty good :D
Kaymer's better than pretty good. He's great. But not at chipping/pitching.

Anyway, Westwood, Mahan fit the bill of this article for me.......

After watching Westwood today I think it's him. It was awful.
Yup.

He made two 15 capper efforts just on the back 9 during the final round.

Tough to watch.

Agreed, I can now proudly state that I have the short game of a top touring pro :)

IMO, this is how golf instructors teach players to YIP.

from start to finish a consciously controlled motion(manipulation)... whatever happened to action/reaction?

Cant charge $$$ for action/reaction.

I saw that too, painful, typical Westy when the heat's on. He's made huge efforts to fix his short game but imo he's always going to be shaky on the back9. And I like the guy, honest, straight shooter.

I almost started this exact topic immediately after reading the interview! Thanks OP!

After reading the thread, it has to be Westwood. Kaymer, probably PotY without McIlroy's summer heroics, is definitely not in a 'dark place mentally' despite the fact that he prefers to use putter around the green.

Mahan languished for most of the 2014 season but really bounced back at the PGA and of course got the W at the Barclays.

Westwood didn't do much on the PGA tour anyways last year... he's fallen pretty far for a guy that was for a very short period of time ranked best on the planet and has been a legitimate contender for the BPNTHWAM mantle for quite a while. Judging from some of the clips posted I'd say he looks far from comfortable on those kinds of shots. I'm actually surprised he fares so well at Augusta given what the conditions are like there.

Although Mahan and Westwood are obvious candidates, I also think that Allenby is That Guy.

1. He is a very poor chipper
2. Him and Ogilvy have history, and I think Geoff just wanted to twist the knife...

Regarding the Ogilvy article (and a couple of others over the last few years), he seems to talk a lot of sense and is a very engaging interviewee.

Very possible. They had an epic blow up out here a couple years ago. I think Allenby actually invited him outside during a charity fundraiser, which was very poor form. Think it may have been something to do with Allenby letting the side down in the Pres Cup and Ogilvy taking a pot shot. Allenby has always been a whiny sook, I hope this was meant forhimand I really hope Allenby took the bait.

Well I'm pretty sure I've got em. If I'm honest with myself Ive always had em, but today it was obvious. I flubbed three chils and did not hit one solid chil or pitch around the greens. I would make perfect practice swings, then jab at the ball and hit it fat or thin. It's really soul destroying when you hit the ball ok and putt decent, but ae totally let down by chipping and pitching.

I read the article the other day and agree that GO makes many good points in this article as well as previously in other articles. The yips can manifest themselves in the long game as well. I recall reading how Duval struggled with the driver a few years ago. It got so bad that on starting hole of a tournament there was OB down both sides and he hit his first one OB one way, the next OB the other way, and then took out a short iron and played down to the Ladies tee - just so he could get his round started. That's painful to watch and, of course, much more painful if it's you. Others like Stricker & Ian Baker Finch are noted examples with driver yips. Haney basically said TW has suffered with it as well. It can be overcome. We'll see how he looks shortly.

I really like GO take on course design and getting new players into the game. Good short courses are a real plus. He makes a lot of sense.
I read an interview with Henrik Stenson and he talked about having the driver yips. He said that it got so bad at one point he would be standing on the tee and look at all the spectators sticking their heads out over the rope to watch him and he was deathly afraid he would hit someone

"Soul Destroying" is right. Believe me I feel your pain.

I can spend hours on the short game area and around the chipping green and be fine. Had more short-game lessons than I dare to remember. Then I am out on the course and right away its more than a 5o-50 chance I am going to yip it. It's primarily delicate, short chips that give me problems. If I can hit putter or hybrid I'm using it.

Short game lessons won't help you because yips aren't a mechanical issue. The best thing you could do is see a shrink because (IMO) yips stem from fear of failure.

ETA: Chipping yips are a recurring issue in my own game. It is truly demoralizing; I'd rather miss a 3-footer than chunk a pitch shot.

You are right. One thing my head pro said to me that really resonated was "You are more worried about not hitting a bad shot instead of trying to hit a great shot". So true! Hence use of putter and hybrids where possible - although I have got pretty good at those through necessity :). Maybe it's time for the odyssey Marxman chipper....

I feel both of your pain. Not identical, but I dealt with throwing yips as a baseball player. I played catcher at a very high level and could throw to the bases with the best of the best. But I developed yips throwing the ball back to the pitcher. Complete "Macky Sasser" disease. I could throw the ball into a bucket from my knees if I was throwing from home to second base, but had to walk the ball back to the pitcher's mound after every pitch. TERRIYING!!! I ended up having to completely rebuild my throwing motion. I didn't throw a baseball for an entire offseason, and instead threw the football, which required a little shorter throwing motion and slightly different shoulder load. I was successful in getting rid of the problem, and was able to further my career as a result, but it was a very humbling experience.

Based on my experience, if you have the full on yips (you find it impossible to hit a good chip and any good result you get is by pure chance) I would suggest trying a significant change in technique - cross handed, one handed, use a driver or a fw, closed stance, extremely open stance, Happy Gilmore-style walk through chip, just something to change the process. The new technique takes your mind off the yips, and it relies on different motor patters which hopefully haven't been "infected." Yips suck! I don't pretend to have the answers to beat them, but these processes helped me overcome my issues. Maybe you can use somethign similar to help yours.

BTW, after reading the article and the posts in thois thread, I would tend to think GO is not reffering to himself. If he were, however, it would be a great tragedy. Dude had some of the best hands on tour when he won the US Open. I watched him on the practice chiiping green that week nip perfect pitch after perfect pitch with that loose armed flip move he used to use. Every shot was just perfect, and I don't recall any other pro having a similar technique. It was like he was making full swings at 5% speed and the ball was just coming out soft and fluffly and landing dead on the flag. I believe he hit one of those shots on the 72nd hole that week to save par, and it was just as pure as those I saw him practicing.
