'L' flex, ladies shaft...what are shaft options for a slower ladies swing?

I'd like to help my mom find a proper shaft for her irons and driver.

 

Seems like ladies are at a loss for shaft selection with one flex no matter if they are 20, 50 or 85 years old.

 

I was helping her find a driver recently which made me think of this, she's swinging in the simulator hitting balls and I gave the ladies bio cell driver a few swings. To my surprise it went just as far and as straight as every other mens driver I hit in the store and I'm swinging it over 100mph. How can that shaft ever work for myself and a 71 year old woman? There has to be something better but I don't see much out there for options.

 

She still swings it hard enough that a proper shaft may definitely help her, I've seen her hit driver as far as 200 yards.

 

So any shaft companies to look at that have some options? I feel like I could play her off the rack ladies driver just fine which tells me it can't be the best thing for her.

There are a few things that I would address before thinking that a ladies shaft "worked" for you.

I wouldn't walk away from those simulators thinking it provided you with factual data. As some of them are poorly configured and some are even set to give some extra "feel good" to the customers. Secondly, you being able to hit a women's flex driver as far as a men's flex driver is not that unheard of. The women's shaft just won't give you consistent results, but occasionally you'll get some good ones out there when all is timed correctly.

What was her swing speed in the simulator with a driver? Also, in fitting for your mother, I would focus more on the weight of the shafts than the flex. I think she would be fine with a ladies flex shaft, just maybe need to find some lightweight ones.

Truth is most shaft companies and OEM's have something to suit her you just have to forget about the labels on the shafts and styling on the clubs. Avoid the notion of ladies clubs for lady golfers and the possibilities grow greatly.

The likleyhood is your mum will like a little less weight in her clubs (not a given by any means) and there is a wide range of light weight driver shafts now available with flexes from LL to X!

It might be worth you while trying a local professional club builder who will have access to a wide range of shafts and driver lofts and should deal with issues like driver length and swing weight in a more flexible way. The OEM's can do this as well you just have to prompt them a little where shaft length and swing weight is concerned.

Bottom line is fit the swing not the age or gender.

As already mentioned, weight is a huge factor when fitting golfers for the perfect shaft. There are a lot of really nice options out there, if you take a closer look.

I have been successful with UST MP series fo woods and irons and with the Radix S line from Matrix. The Radix is a tad firmer cpm wise and the Radix 4 iron shaft is a great super lightweiht option.

Before you invest a lot in new shafts, and look at different shaft weights, maybe have a clubfitter check the swingweight in her current clubs through the set.

My wife is also senior, younger and probably more a beginner than your mom. We found the swingweights on my wife's prior (callaway) and current (Adams) were inconsistent in the set, low from the stated specs and way lower from any norm for women's clubs. The clubfitter brought them up in the Adams recently for sw and standardized them through headweighting as needed and GP tour 25 men's grips. She needed new grips anyway and when checked she was 1/64 smaller than men's standard and these worked for both purposes. On a recent trip when she christened the new adjusted clubs she made better contact and had more pop on many shots than ever before.
