We love our wives....but we gotta vent!

Ok this is for those that have been patient but have suffered!

Gang I apologize but I have to vent.....I know some of you all have gone through this so please feel free to let it out......

So Thursday, I had the pleasure to take my wife out on a real course for the very first time. Couple problems here........

#1 I have only taken her to the Driving range, she only really hits a Driver and a Wedge....Nothing else, no irons, no putters nothing...

#2 Originally she was not going to play but just ride in the cart, my female neighbors (her friends) convinced her to just play, plus they paid her green fees.

#3 She did not have a full set of clubs, sooooo.... yes we ended up having to share some clubs.....

OK so the venting.....OMG.....that was a struggle to hand hold and almost baby sitting.

Being in the military I always felt the need to be prepared before going out to do anything. Well this was a "Cluster !#@#$"

1) she had no Idea about the rules and etiquette so having to teach her on the course took a lot of patience.

2) I thought it would be safer for her to drive the cart....BAD MOVE, she was so scared to drive the cart around and not knowing the etiquette she drove around aimlessly like a loss puppy (This was my bad).

3) Since she didnt have a full set of clubs she just used mines.....BAD MOVE sharing a putter is just down right STUPID, if there is any clubs to have..... Have a driver, wedge and a putter....

Now the next thing was since she knows no distances...... I have to watch my ball and focus on my shot while guessing and handing her clubs to guess what she might hit.....

Now here is the Kicker you ready for this one......Naturally she is freaking awesome! Off the Womens tee, she actually out drove me on a couple of holes....WTF!!!! She was actually really good off the tee. Then give her an iron...OMG she actually could hit it well, when she didnt wiff at it LOL!

Putting was a whole nother animal.....4, 6, 10 putt....but that was expected. So that was a rough..... patience testing round of golf......

Now guess what...... I had to do it all over again on Saturday........

So for all you that have done this already with your wives....my hats off...because you are either the most patient person on the planet or you are a dumb MOTHER!@#$$% Like me....

Next to all those that may take your wife out on the course..... couple suggestions....

1) Make sure she actually has a bag with at least a driver, Some type of wedge/Iron, and a putter.....Also Many and may I say many extra junk golf balls

2) If you can explain some of the simple etiquette before hand, it would be highly suggested

3) Dont let your wife driver the cart the first time out, drive the cart first and explain and show her how to drive it. If not they will drive it like a hotwheels barbie corvette......low and slow.....

4) Be patient........ if she enjoys it, you have more excuse to play more rounds and she can only get better!

and lastly......... Remember....when she sings and misses......and takes forever....just remember....You love your wife....you love your wife....you love your wife.......

PS we have not gotten a divorce yet so we are good LOL!

Are you venting about your wife? Because the title indicates as much. I realize you got around to advising what to do ahead of time but honestly, that advice seems rather unnecessary. Make sure you're not sharing a putter? Uh, check!

It sounds like you were completely ill prepared. 1-3 were all things she would be expected not to be aware of. You are.

And youre preaching of "patience" is especially baffling. I honestly think You should start over and vent about you.

Nope just venting about the whole experience, and yes some of the bone head moves I made so others dont make the same mistake.....Yes....... granted some seem to be pretty clear, but again I was caught off guard as she didnt intend to play nor show interest in playing......

Secondly everything was so last minute....you try and find a set of golf clubs on Thanksgiving then find out she wants to play again on saturday with our neighbors again and look for clubs again on Friday night BLACK Friday......

So yes.... I agree I made a lot of mistakes on this one.... but playing during the round with the stated situations did not make for one of my top 10 highlights of the year....again I am sure you understand at least that LOL.

PS Kymar.... I did call myself a Dumb Mother!@#$% if that helps?

Now you my friend have just entered into what some do not dare enter. This can go one of two ways. On the positive, she will understand how great the game can be a be supportive each and every time you want to go out and play a round with your buddies. The other is where it can get bad. Next thing you know, you are planning every golf trip with her in mind and that can just escalate into the abyss, unless you have never experienced the young college girl serving drinks at the turn or her friend coming around every so often offering over priced beer and smelling like some cinnamon and vanilla lotion. With your buddies, its the best thing since sliced bread. With your wife....AWKWARD... Well it is a fine balance and one that should be balanced carefully. You do not want to come off as not enjoying the outing with her. First thing I would do is get her interested into a full set if not upgrade if she has a set already. This will open her eyes to the cost of golf clubs and the variety that one has to look through and test out to find the right one. This will pay dividends on any future purchase you might have on BST and will terminate or minimize any questioning on her end. Next thing is to get her into lessons. Of course it should be with a golf instructor that you also wouldn't mind seeing. You of course can work on anything you might have wanted to improve on and of course the lessons will get her playing better as well. So if you see where I am getting at, this has its positives and negatives. Sounds like she had a great time so you are headed in the right direction. Tread lightly.......and have fun

Unfortunately, I gotta agree with KYMAR. I wonder what it would look like if she went to a "whatever online forum she might go to" and vented about her experience. "You know... I gotta vent. My husband took me out golfing and boy.....!!!!" :)

I have taken 3 people out for their first round on a course (well, 2 adults and my 3yo son, all at different times). Both of the adults I spent time with at the range. I also took about 15 minutes to review the proper etiquette before hand. When I say before hand, I mean before we got to the course. There is a lot that goes into etiquette so I tried to keep it basic. If you wait until you are on the course there are going to be too many jitters and emotions for them to even listen, much less remember. There are lots of other tips to get people started golfing.

It sounds like she is naturally gifted so that goes in your favor. It also sounds like she had a good time and wants to go again! Which also goes in your favor (maybe? Questionable if you want to share your passion of golf ALL the time with your wife). It sounds like you survived your mistakes and have a good thread started about how to get loved ones/friends into golf!

Points well taken......and my sentiments....

Fear rushed over me when I realized I needed to get a set of golf clubs for her.......As we are members here on GolfWRX...... we all have a HO in side of us if we accept it or not......So I the mind began to rev up..... Do I buy her a cheap set from sports authority? Do I go down the Golf Stores and Buy here a real set, do I need a good putter or just a $20 one for now.....etc etc....again imagine all of this on Thursday Thanksgiving.....then being told we are going to play again on Saturday, so going shopping on Black Friday the shopping was insane. $199 for a cheap full set of everything?, $599 for a set of just new irons, $299 for a good used set..... I dont want to spend all that if she never plays again... frick that LOL

Also....Holy crap....... I never thoughts about the awkward beer cart girl and the random run ins....hmmmm might need to rethink this strategy. I thought it would a good thing......

Lessons..... Cardinal rule....never teach your wife......... I have accepted this......but again..... its weird....she has natural talent and she could actually be really good, heck I think she is way better than me than I was when I started.... Did I mention on Saturday...she ran off 4 straight natural bogeys.....Hell I cant do that now and I am an 11......

I have been taking my son to the course with me since he was 6. I ran into some of the same issues but I also had him pick up after a certain numbers of tries and told him he can do better on the next hole. As for etiquette, I just taught him as we went. He learned really quick. Main thing I would teach, though, is pace of play. I have taught my 10 year old to move out on the golf course and not screw around wasting time. Keep up with the group in front of you and don't hold up anyone behind you if the course is open in front of you.

My rarely plays. If she wanted to she could be pretty decent. Little interest. So we go on the free round day for Mom's day or some nice Fall day when she can get some hot cocoa. We walk. Sometimes we would play the late pm "loop" at our local course - the first 4 holes take you back to the clubhouse. Score never comes into the equation. It's fun. Typically 9 but sometimes 18. I go to quilt shows, trips to local sewing places when on the road, etc - she was pretty excited to get the autograph of a quilter in San Diego that is the HOF. Yet to make it to Paducah, Ky but I'm certain we will. Btw, I have about as much interest in quilting as she does golf but it's fun.

We are like butterflies that flutter for a day and think it is forever

Sealed with a curse as sharp as a knife.  Doomed is your soul and damned is your life.

The first rule of the Dunning-Kruger club is that you don’t know you are a member.   The second rule is that we’re all members from time to time.

It's another beautiful day at the Red Pony Bar and continual soirée.

Nope I agree with Kymar too..... hence me sharing my experience and venting about the experience. I think......and I loosely use that word think, that she is interested so I can go into a little more pre planning and prepping..... I cant agree with you more about explaining the etiquette prior to. Man I still dont have all of them down how the heck am I supposed to teach someone new.

I appreciate your statement, I thought this might be a good thread to help others if they run into this situation. You know how you learn from others mistakes..... yes I will be "that guy" but I would rather share it and look like the fool, so no one else has to endure the idiocy that may unfold.

HAHAHA Great Post E, and hats off to you for taking your wife out for her first round. My wife wants to learn next summer so I'll be going through this at some point next season. So thanks for the heads up :)

I know your pain a little at least lol. I took a young guy that works with me out for his first ever round last summer, he had never even been to the driving range before, imagine that!! lol. Luckily he was a par 3, 9 hole course and he was a good sport about picking his ball up and dropping it next to mine after a few wiffs hahaha. But I get it, having to explain rules, ettiqette and how to play, all while in the middle of a round that your also trying to play is pretty overwhelming. add in the fact that this playing partner is your wife and that turns in into a WHOLE nother ball game. You da Man E ;)

I think you're lucky. My wife Hates golf and doesn't like that I play. She doesn't mind if I take the boys golfing, but the problem is they don't like golf that much and never practice.

If your wife likes to play golf, I would much rather be in your shoes. She will learn etiquette in time. It's not rocket science. It will be fun to do together and then she will play with her own friends.

I'm sure she will take lessons from some young, good looking assistant Pro and them divorce you! Haha. I'm kidding.

Just remember this: Don't let her take lessons from a young, good looking assistant Pro.

OK going to steer this thread a little..... I got my thoughts going.... This may be a loaded questions, and since I already got flamed on the first post ......what the hell......

Clubs..... What should I do about clubs? This is the scenario I have now.

I got a bag so we are good.... She has this ladies Cobra Driver that she hits a ton, my co-worker gave me like 3 other ones from their wives but she hits this the best.

I have a bunch of woods too. Some Callaway woods...

NO Irons....

Pinseeker Ladies Sand Wedge ( Bought on Friday @ 9:39pm madness shopping Damn Black Friday is just stupid)

Pinseeker Putter. (Bought same time as above) LOL

Michell, Yes Roots and Relics is on the stop off list but....... from experienced people here, (Those that are not filthy rich) How do you handle the club buying process for your wives new to the game.

Do you do the Sports Authority whole set for $199, Bag, driver, irons putter? These seem so cheap and crappy, the GolfWRX HO says go for quality.

Do you do the Roger Dunns/Pro Am Buy a new set of Ladies Irons for $400+ (This is the rich man option, which I dont really feel comfortable spending if she doesnt ever play again

Do you go to the Second Hand/used Section and spend $200+ on just irons? (She needs just irons really.... but $200 for used decent irons, or $200 for that new complete set from Sports Authority?)

So I am kinda of in a rock and a hard place....I am almost sure my neighbors are going to ask here to play again soon, so I should get her some irons.......I really dont want to spend $500...........I can stomach $200 but.....$500..... Daddy needs a new Driver...maybe a wedge...maybe a Scotty putter......

It's shopping. All you do is outline a budget and get out of the way!

We are like butterflies that flutter for a day and think it is forever

Sealed with a curse as sharp as a knife.  Doomed is your soul and damned is your life.
Enjoy every sandwich

The first rule of the Dunning-Kruger club is that you don’t know you are a member.   The second rule is that we’re all members from time to time.

It's another beautiful day at the Red Pony Bar and continual soirée.

OK going to steer this thread a little..... I got my thoughts going.... This may be a loaded questions, and since I already got flamed on the first post ......what the hell......

How about the starter set and a few lessons? See if there is sustainable passion.

To go with the what you have I would get her a

4 or 5 wood
4 and 6 hybrid
7 and 9 iron

all can be gotten from Hireko assembled and shipped for probably 100 bucks. If she sticks with it, fill in the missing clubs as needed. Hireko make quality low cost components and have a nice series of ladies clubs.

E, as a wife who plays golf, to your question about the irons. Get her input. Knowing what I know now, I say spend $200 on quality used irons. However, she might not understand that concept and want something shiny and new. Even if it is crap.
My first set of irons were purchased for me by a boyfriend, at a garage sale. They were a good brand. If you have some time you can check Goodwill store, sometimes you get lucky. Whatever you do, enjoy the time together.

It's not how...it's how many

Kymar, Great point....Im so stuck on trying to get a full set.... She probably doesnt even need it huh? A 7,9 and a hybrid or 2 is more than enough? Excellent input!

Where I agree on the set..... as quoted above.... since you are a women golfer would you need to get a full set or get a couple of gaps like Kymar suggested? It makes more sense as it would be cheaper, her interest will depend if I buy a complete set or not and she can still play a full round with 7 clubs rather than 14.

My wife got the bug a couple years ago and I bought her a set of ladies Razr's and Titliest driver all used of course and cost me a few hundred bucks, she has lost interest in playing and quite frankly I dont really encourage her as golf is my thing and we all need to have some time apart. She does still like shopping for golf apparel which I dont mind as it makes it easier for me to buy stuff...I also had taken her to range quite a bit before venturing onto the course and have her watch golf and pick up etiquette that way which seemed to work. She usually plays 2-4 times a year which is ok by me....Good luck OP, hope it goes well for you and your wife.

Exactice,

I can't convince my wife to take up the game of golf, but wish I could. Enjoy the moments that you can spend with each other. I hope she will share your passion for the game.

As for the set make-up. I agree with Aimee and Kymar. Ask her opinion, before you drop a wad of cash. Also, the less is more approach may be a good place to start. I purchased a starter set for my 4 year old this year. Dr, 7 iron, PW, putter. Too many clubs can lead to indecision. I think it's best to start with the K.I.S.S. principle. I'm sure your wife doesn't want to be any more frustrated than you are.

Keep us informed of the progress you are both making. This can't be any more difficult than building a Master Chief Halloween costume from scratch ; )

If you think that was a bad day, we had to watch the formerly proud football franchise in the Chicago Bears lose to Detroit. You were at least on a golf course.
[/quote] I dont know about you but at least the bears can muster more than 3 points. My Forty Niners seem to be okay with a field goal and our qb seems to throw more to the opposition then he does to our own receivers.

If you'd like Cutler, I'll help him pack. He leads the NFL is turnovers. The 49ers can make playoff plans...the Bears are planning vacations.

My wife had never played golf, and we booked our honeymoon at the Sandals Bahamas that has the Greg Norman course. She wanted to play with me...i was a little bit concerned it could be awkward, but frankly it worked out great. Some of this is dependant on the type of woman you are married to of course....but i mean for me it worked out great

I bought her a couple of demo clubs, a 5-7-9 iron, and then also bought her some cheap woods from the golf dome close to my house which sells some older clubs for like 15-20 bucks. I borrowed a putter from my friend who is a righty

The way we played was she would tee off on every hole, and then no matter where the ball went we would drop it 70yds or so in front of the green so she could hit an iron and then play in from there. If the course wasn't busy we'd alter things a bit sometimes if she wanted (like she'd take a few tee shots until she hit a good one). I told her basic etiquette things but really it wasn't necessary, we were in a cart together so i could just tell her on the fly.

We went to the driving range a couple of times a week for the month before our trip

Honestly it went great. A couple of times we even paired up with other people and we never held anyone up, and they ended up having a lot of fun too. I mean my wife can be pretty funny, she would hit a drive 120yds or something and then go nuts and say "this is so fun, this is so fun!!!!" LOL

As a Lion's fan I can comfortable say that we'll probably be joining you on the golf course (probably sans wives) in the near future. They'll find a way to muck it up, or finish 10 - 6 and miss the playoffs. Probably losing to a dysfunctional Bears squad in the process.
