OK going to steer this thread a little..... I got my thoughts going.... This may be a loaded questions, and since I already got flamed on the first post ......what the hell......

Clubs..... What should I do about clubs? This is the scenario I have now.

I got a bag so we are good.... She has this ladies Cobra Driver that she hits a ton, my co-worker gave me like 3 other ones from their wives but she hits this the best.

I have a bunch of woods too. Some Callaway woods...

NO Irons....

Pinseeker Ladies Sand Wedge ( Bought on Friday @ 9:39pm madness shopping Damn Black Friday is just stupid)

Pinseeker Putter. (Bought same time as above) LOL

Michell, Yes Roots and Relics is on the stop off list but....... from experienced people here, (Those that are not filthy rich) How do you handle the club buying process for your wives new to the game.

Do you do the Sports Authority whole set for $199, Bag, driver, irons putter? These seem so cheap and crappy, the GolfWRX HO says go for quality.

Do you do the Roger Dunns/Pro Am Buy a new set of Ladies Irons for $400+ (This is the rich man option, which I dont really feel comfortable spending if she doesnt ever play again

Do you go to the Second Hand/used Section and spend $200+ on just irons? (She needs just irons really.... but $200 for used decent irons, or $200 for that new complete set from Sports Authority?)

So I am kinda of in a rock and a hard place....I am almost sure my neighbors are going to ask here to play again soon, so I should get her some irons.......I really dont want to spend $500...........I can stomach $200 but.....$500..... Daddy needs a new Driver...maybe a wedge...maybe a Scotty putter......

Fantastic thread. And great OP that had me laughing. Next time you feel your patience is pushed a bit just think that somewhere out there in a frozen desert far, far away a Vaterman is out on a round with the wife AND his 5 year old daughter. No cart... walking. Wife has very little natural talent for sports (none actually) and the daughter may all of sudden be much more interested in raking the "sandbox" on hole 2 than playing.

I have been introducing my wife to the game for the past couple of months. And in spite of her having great difficulty she is hanging in there and has started to hit the ball.

I cannot tell you how big my appreciation of our Club pro has become after he started doing beginner lessons with my wife. That is very wise for so many reasons that I sense I don't have to repeat to you guys.

Equipment? She did play a junior set from my Brothers son (she is a tight little package) but her interest caught on so I decided to go shopping for completely new clubs with her. It was at the time when debates in the "Back to life" thread went really high... GI versus blade and here I was trying to take my wife through the process of choosing gear. I literally cried with laughter confronted as I was with the contrast.

You may experience that women takes things into consideration in this process that may not come natural to you. Color of shafts and grips may very well be the most important factor. And as far as I understood color choice may be depending on the color of the golf shoes or polo.

Cobra baffler women’s set turned out to be really good for her in the bay and luckily the colors were fine. So that was what I bought for her. You may have to cleverly guide her into trying different weights and shaft lengths. Getting a set that was light enough really made a huge difference.

Later I went with her to “my” dome and she got to try her new set. I did some practice myself and noticed that she hit the ball better than I have seen before but the sound was weird. I checked and sure… she had kept the plastic wrapping in the club heads. I told her that it would be better if she took it off. She knew that but she did not want to scratch her nea shiny clubs!!!

Just saying that being prepared for a different set of logic may be useful to you.

Teaching your wife to golf can be pretty difficult, but i kept a few basic rules (both for her and myself) and stuck to them. Again it worked out well

Basically i told her from the very beginning that golf is a very challenging sport to do well and she shouldn't get frustrated no matter how poorly she hit it. When she had tough days at the range i would re-assure her by telling her how hard it was for me at first, and told her stories of times when i couldn't even hit the ball straight myself.

When it came to actual lessons, i kept it very very simple, like how far to stand from the ball, where to position in in the stance, and just EXTREMELY basic swing tips. I encouraged her on all good shots and didn't give her too much critisism. If i wanted to give tips i would wait for her to hit the ball 10-12 times first, so i wasn't interrupting her frequently, which can be frustrating. After a few range sessions i told her i would only give comments after 10 shot increments. That way she isn't worried i'm going to be constantly correcting her

These are very wise words. Listen carefully...
And whenever a competent stranger (like the pro) can take over... It is worth a lot:::

Exactice,

I can't convince my wife to take up the game of golf, but wish I could. Enjoy the moments that you can spend with each other. I hope she will share your passion for the game.

As for the set make-up. I agree with Aimee and Kymar. Ask her opinion, before you drop a wad of cash. Also, the less is more approach may be a good place to start. I purchased a starter set for my 4 year old this year. Dr, 7 iron, PW, putter. Too many clubs can lead to indecision. I think it's best to start with the K.I.S.S. principle. I'm sure your wife doesn't want to be any more frustrated than you are.

Keep us informed of the progress you are both making. This can't be any more difficult than building a Master Chief Halloween costume from scratch ; )

Well said Peanuts Daddy! I've already posted several stories about my wife and how I enjoy her just coming along with me when I play, the most recent I put in the post "Something Only A Golfer can feel and understand"... so I won't repost it. But she will be a 20 year breast cancer survivor next spring, so whatever she wants to do golf wise just thrills me. Best thing is she supports my crummy game, ha, and even loves it when I buy new stuff, I guess she figures it's still worth it to support me at 63... it's been a mutual thing :)

My rarely plays. If she wanted to she could be pretty decent. Little interest. So we go on the free round day for Mom's day or some nice Fall day when she can get some hot cocoa. We walk. Sometimes we would play the late pm "loop" at our local course - the first 4 holes take you back to the clubhouse. Score never comes into the equation. It's fun. Typically 9 but sometimes 18. I go to quilt shows, trips to local sewing places when on the road, etc - she was pretty excited to get the autograph of a quilter in San Diego that is the HOF. Yet to make it to Paducah, Ky but I'm certain we will. Btw, I have about as much interest in quilting as she does golf but it's fun.

Oh no, glk, mine has a quilting machine, knitting machines,
embroidery machines, sewing machines and on and on.
She calls it 'fiber arts". I call it "rocket science".

Years ago, my wife said she would like to learn to play golf so we could spend more time together. Yes, I played almost ever day back then and was gone ALOT. I told her if she would go to the driving range with me and learn to hit the ball off a tee and off the ground getting the ball in the air in both cases, we would go out in the afternoons when it was not crowded and give it a shot. She did practice and got to where she could hit irons off the deck. The driver was never really a problem. We talked about etiquette, pace of play, honors and such. She knew quite a bit about all this as she had gone out with me on many occasions so she had a clue.
When she got comfortable playing, we started playing in couples events and honestly we did quite well. I always loved playing in couples events with other couples where in the other couple in our group the guy would insist on playing his drives because they were longer than his wife's. In most cases, the wife would not be able to hit the green playing his drive. I almost always took my wife's drive because I had a better chance of hitting the green than she did. Putting took a while for her to get it down but she actually became quite good.
Now...the mistakes...never, ever, ever try to give your wife pointers or lessons yourself on the golf course. This is a recipe for disaster. Save any real help for the driving range and then very litte then.
And, my wife got to the point where she wanted me to book tee times so she and I could play on the weekends instead of me playing with my normal Saturday group. This took some compromising and my wife is not one to compromise very much.
Oh well...after our son was born...she quit playing altogether. I sort of miss us not playing in tournaments together. That really was fun.

My wife has been playing about 4 yrs now, and I can tell she is actually getting more hooked recently. I got her a set of lady's Amp Cell irons which she loves, and I just got her the driver for Xmas. She plays decently, and would probably shoot around 110 if she kept score. However, she has pretty severe ADD, so that always keeps things interesting on the course. She finds remembering pace of play pointers difficult - she doesn't remember where her ball went (she will sometimes walk up to the wrong ball on the green), she puts her clubs/bag down on the wrong side of the green, she doesn't always have a tee in her pocket, she dawdles before shots, she gets easily distracted (look, a squirrel!) and she gets flustered if you tell her to hurry up, but she also gets annoyed if we are behind a slow group all day. Despite all of this, she is mine and I love her dearly.

I see you those machines and .... Actually, I sold her leather machine on craigslist last Fall. But she still has her two embroidery machines Tajima C1500s single head 16 needles - yes they weigh 225 lbs - one in Charleston SC and one with us in Chicago but to be moved to Kodak. We also have "display" vintage Singer machines from the 1930s (the leather machine was a Singer built in the 30s too). And she has her prize found at a garage sale - a Singer Featherwieight from the 60s. Also has a machine at our two of our son's apartments - San Diego and Boston. I get many nice things from these machines. I confess that I could actually use those commerical embroidery machines better than her at one time. Sort of like collecting golf clubs!!

But on the food side I'm created a bit of a monster - around 5 years ago I sprang for a 15 piece All Clad set for Christmas (has paid many, many dividends) however we now have a much larger set - even went to the All Clad factory sale last December - in the market for some high quality knives this Christmas. This is probably the only reason I got to refresh my entire bag last Christmas but you can't cook with golf clubs LOL.

On a serious note, great post OP. Wife golf can be interesting

Years ago, my wife and I in Myrtle Beach with another couple. She is moaning about how she can't hit a shot and I am telling her to relax as she hasn't hit a ball in 6 months .. my buddy rolls up and hands me his cell and tells us to call

I'm glad mine's not into the "collecting" aspect, lol, and she's never
mentioned leather. She just likes to create things and just like we
should be with golf.....she loves the process, and just gives things
away that she makes.... or does the odd request here and there.

Cooking? Would love to get engrossed in that! We haven't yet.
Someday, when we finally turn in the truck keys I can see us
discovering the joys of cooking again!

Absolutely DP. Many of them had issues when the toured from
China to Calif. to Alabama so there were tour issues, yes.

its Kinda of funny with the Club pro/teacher..... My wife has a wild kind of swing.... but 2 things come to mind as to why she can hit the ball so damn far and well.

1) As some of you know I learned to surf from her, so she is a surfer by hobby. Her balance is unbelievable, you should see the things she does in be......wait NVM.
2) Her Hand eye coordination is excellent too, you should see the things she does in ......wait.......NVM

But yeah her swing is wild but cause she can balance here self, she connects to the ball real well and can hulk smash......Anyways I am afraid to send her to a pro and they fawk up what ever natural talent she has like a Foley to woods (Humor me please. Info overload like GolfWRX and lose interest real fast.

Well I am going down to roots and relics and get a 9, 7, and 5 iron.......Ill see how this goes maybe we can go to the range tonight!

Ok this is for those that have been patient but have suffered!

Gang I apologize but I have to vent.....I know some of you all have gone through this so please feel free to let it out......

So Thursday, I had the pleasure to take my wife out on a real course for the very first time. Couple problems here........

#1 I have only taken her to the Driving range, she only really hits a Driver and a Wedge....Nothing else, no irons, no putters nothing...

#2 Originally she was not going to play but just ride in the cart, my female neighbors (her friends) convinced her to just play, plus they paid her green fees.

#3 She did not have a full set of clubs, sooooo.... yes we ended up having to share some clubs.....

OK so the venting.....OMG.....that was a struggle to hand hold and almost baby sitting.

Being in the military I always felt the need to be prepared before going out to do anything. Well this was a "Cluster !#@#$"

1) she had no Idea about the rules and etiquette so having to teach her on the course took a lot of patience.
2) I thought it would be safer for her to drive the cart....BAD MOVE, she was so scared to drive the cart around and not knowing the etiquette she drove around aimlessly like a loss puppy (This was my bad).
3) Since she didnt have a full set of clubs she just used mines.....BAD MOVE sharing a putter is just down right STUPID, if there is any clubs to have..... Have a driver, wedge and a putter....

Now the next thing was since she knows no distances...... I have to watch my ball and focus on my shot while guessing and handing her clubs to guess what she might hit.....

Now here is the Kicker you ready for this one......Naturally she is freaking awesome! Off the Womens tee, she actually out drove me on a couple of holes....WTF!!!! She was actually really good off the tee. Then give her an iron...OMG she actually could hit it well, when she didnt wiff at it LOL!

Putting was a whole nother animal.....4, 6, 10 putt....but that was expected. So that was a rough..... patience testing round of golf......

Now guess what...... I had to do it all over again on Saturday........

So for all you that have done this already with your wives....my hats off...because you are either the most patient person on the planet or you are a dumb MOTHER!@#$$% Like me....

Next to all those that may take your wife out on the course..... couple suggestions....

1) Make sure she actually has a bag with at least a driver, Some type of wedge/Iron, and a putter.....Also Many and may I say many extra junk golf balls

2) If you can explain some of the simple etiquette before hand, it would be highly suggested

3) Dont let your wife driver the cart the first time out, drive the cart first and explain and show her how to drive it. If not they will drive it like a hotwheels barbie corvette......low and slow.....

4) Be patient........ if she enjoys it, you have more excuse to play more rounds and she can only get better!

and lastly......... Remember....when she sings and misses......and takes forever....just remember....You love your wife....you love your wife....you love your wife.......

PS we have not gotten a divorce yet so we are good LOL!

Sounds as though you set yourself up. I appreciate the military reference point, I know it all too well. However, it sounds as though you failed your military training when it came to preparation before the assault. Prior to marriage, I played plenty of rounds of golf with beginner women just like your wife; not one of those rounds took place on a regulation course. Why? Because I new they belonged on par 3 courses.

Furthermore, I am hard pressed to believe you were not aware of her ability, or lack thereof. Yet, you moved forward. The other mistake I read was you were expecting that round to some how be different. Reason I said you set yourself up. However, where we're different is, 'if' I were to vent about my wife, it surly wouldn't be on the internet with strangers, but with her. Course if you're afraid of her, I suppose that might be why you're here. Good luck. :beach:

Yes Pepper, I already took the flaming from Kymar already.....it was failed hence the thread to share with others about my Failure...... I must say again though.....I was caught off guard without a plan...I did not have time to facilitate a training regimen nor reach my supply Sgt in time to acquire the correct equipment prior to rolling out. It was difficulty because the terrain was unfamiliar, my team was new, straight out of boot and my chain of command had dictated that I must take this mission regardless of the outcome.

Of course after the mission we do an AAR and at this point I have gotten much negative as well as positive reinforcement to better prepare for any future situation. In addition to the AAR's it is the Team leaders responsibility to take back his AAR to his other unit commanders to share the "Lessons Learned" If you feel that my AAR is unacceptable I greatly apologize and I will refrain from doing so in any future events.

In addition my Unit Commander (The Wife) ....Yes I am deathly afraid of her as she runs a very tight crew.....scary I tell you..... You never disobey your commander, you shake your head and say yes maam and push on..... Then after you go back to your barracks and talk $h!t about the LT behind their back.....

That's interesting about not having too many clubs to go around. I assume most wrxers have putters falling out of their car when they pull up to the course.

I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW..... I failed on this one... but.... Believe it or not..... I actually just sold all my extra clubs off to the second hand store...... 3 putters.....4 wedges......6 Womens Hybrids.....3 Womens Drivers and an Old Mens Driver...... Was trying to fund the new bag for 2015.......Cant convince the wife that I can buy more clubs with all these extra clubs laying around.....

So my left over stock was effectively dismantled. Again.... my wife NEVER showed interest until my neighbors forced her to play...........

I have a question to the thread starter, if it was you who was just starting out in golf, do you think you'd be okay with piece of s*** second hand clubs? and having her 10HC husband showing her how to golf with all the expert instruction he can give? common, a Pink lady's bag? Would you be seen in a bag like that?

If she's new to golf do the same thing you would do- buy good equipment, cool looking bag that says "I'm not a dork", and get professional lessons every other week for for 6-8 weeks. I play with women on couples days and there is a mixture of low HC-mid HC- and the high HC women who play. None of them sound like your wife you describe. Give her some credit as you would expect yourself if you were starting something new and wanted to enjoy a game with your husband. I know I do.

Texasjim very fair questions, let me try and answer all of them!

1) As a new player with no Idea how to play, or nothing about golf equipment, I played with clubs I got for free from my grandpa, then bought some random clubs from a second hand store and continued to do so. I personally have finally purchased my first full new set 2 years agoa nd I am still using it.

2) Pink Ladies bag? Where did you get that, she hates pink so she is using one of my old golf bags LOL.

3) Instruction I can give? No way....I will show her the basics at the range but a pro needs to do the rest......BUT.....she needs to be interested in it first...I really dont know what is going on in her head about golf, Me being a 10hdcp really means nothing....All it means as for me and my physical structure I can get the ball in the hole 11 over par on the average.

4) As for the women here......OH man....you dont know how crazy them asian women are with equipment.....nuts I tell you LOL especially in Hawaii. Secondly lessons....again...tough call, she enjoyed 2 rounds with her husband and neighbor friends.....Thats it....has not asked about clubs...nor going to the range or wanting to go back any times soon.......so shelling about $500+ for a whole new poser set of clubs.....I think I will wait.

4) How I want to be treated? Well as you can tell from the flaming, I dont HO enough clubs to have an extra putter, I am so cheap. I need to save as much money as I can and be as extremely economical as I can. She knows this...so even she is not pushing the hot button for clubs....Hell she is the one that comes home from 5 hours of shopping and comes in the house with 1 bag.....1 small bag.... a pair of shoes she got for .99 cents....Yes you read that right 99cents......

5) As for credit..... I give her plenty....she is a bad a**.... just aint going to force the sport down her throat just because I like it......If she wants in.....prove it...if not....we can stick to surfing!

LOL! one love my friend one love!

okay, good response. I just get my dander up when I see some of these "women" posts. I'm fortunate enough to be married to a golfer who probable wins 50/50 with me. I guess your right though in that your wife needs to want to play before spending big bucks. If she does decide to play then watch out as she will now notice all the new little things you buy for your golf game:). You may start getting the comment my my makes, " so when did yogurt that club?"

Took the wife out for 9 holes super twilight. I eagle the first hole. She says nothing. 2 more birds and one bogey. I shoot 3 under for 9 holes and after the round she says "you played good honey". She had no idea that I shot 3 under. It was just a casual non chalant remark. So funny.

I don't play golf with the wife much, due to her still working and "her" family commitments. One Sunday afternoon this Spring, she said she wanted to play 9. For the most part, she can't get the ball in the air. Fortunately, the course was deserted that day. I suggested we walk and she just play a 7 iron and putter. For beginners, I've always felt it does no good to give them a bag full of clubs, just makes the game more difficult. Getting in and out of a cart every twenty yards adds to the frustration.

We had a pleasant time that day. I told her when she retires, she should take a community college beginning golf course. I even told her I'd take it with her. (Maybe, I'll learn something.)

Play well!

I have invited my wife to go golfing and hopefully one day she will. I would love to teach her to respect this hidden power that I have to manipulate a little ball to travel far when I need to and to spin back and stop short when I need to. Its often hard to translate that to a lame person who does not play the game. I think that golf is such an individualistic sport that even if I were to explain why I play and why I hunt for golf clubs and why I get up early in the morning on a saturday to play this game, she would not understand unless she experiences it first hand. She knows how much I love the game. It was part of the fine print when I signed my name to the marriage license. Hope we can some day play as a twosome and go on golf trips. Better that my wife respect the game than be an outsider looking in.
