Torching my Futura X5

the process is in motion (ordered some extra sole plate screws, weight wrench, epoxy, acetone, grease remover) to start a little project on my X5...anyone seen or done this to a futura?

paintfill removed from all parts:

 

here are the disassembly pics - since i appear to be the guinea pig - for anyone who needs a parts list (in case they are missing something)

 

there are a total of (6) screws, (5) rubber O-rings, sole plate, head, (2) weights, (2) weight O-rings

 

**note: waiting on my weight wrench to get here tomorrow, along with the screws**

Well, wrench didnt come and the screws that came are too small...did however remove the anodized black on the aluminum:

it's done. it looks antiqued with some epic blues, purples and deep deep golds in it. i'm waiting on paintfill till i get the sole plate finished up. my kitchen lights don't do this justice...enjoy!

Just a heads up that the Futura series putters are made of Aluminum. I've never heard of or seen Aluminum being torched, but I've seen it many times with steel. I would do a little bit of research before continuing forward.

I did -- " By using stainless steel for the face and body, the weight is kept low and moved out, for optimal balance and performance. "

the sole plate is aluminum ---- "The lighter, precision milled aluminum sole plate is engineered to help visually expand the head size and also forms the flange, which offers an amazing set of visual cues that help the body and brain align."

The cupcake is the body. The wrapper is the removable sole plate. U can still bake the cupcake without the wrapper

I read the quote of the X5 as you did. The face is steel, aluminum sole.

Torch the head. Strip the sole plate. Add sprinkles.

i'm just pondering what i'd like the head to look like - what say you guys?

do i go dark blue purple with gold weights...or reverse? keep in mind the little sole plate thing is black...i have a word out to scotty on that as well...see if i can't do something with it as well...

make the head something not as flashy, then make the weights/ sole plate with flashier colors. Though Dark blue purple would be sweet. I also like a torched gold head as well.

[/quote] i think the gold head would be easiest to achieve as it is the lower temp rating. i'm thinkin the gold could be awesome in the head with some pale blue, white, silver accent paintfill...what do you think?

as you can see, i got just the right amount of purples in there...i actually got the wrapper to match the golds (quite happy with the result).

 

should feel very soft when hitting a golfball. this finish might not hold up well to rain. might go great with milk tho.

I think that would be sweet dude. But never have been a fan of white paint fill. Stick to silvers blues or even black and gold on that gold head. You can always experiment a little at a time, strip it and start over.

And make sure you post pics.

i'll absolutely keep you guys updated. the wrench and spare screws are due to arrive tomorrow. disassembly is tomorrow night...first 'cook' is tomorrow night too - i'm going to do a few screws in different colors to experiment.

well, thankfully my household oven can apparently get up to 575*...(did a test last night to the dismay of my wife) lol

The oven in my house gets up to like 800-900 when you put it on self clean mode. Maybe give that a whirl.

ok - little update on the path forward/design/hopes for the putter -

The head is going to be dark blue with light blue along the outside edges of the 'fins' and along the toe/heel. the sole plate that was stock in black anodized will be reverted back to silver. the screws and weights will be turned to 'straw' or goldish/yellow. there will be pale (carolina) blue, white, gold paintfill. pondering what to do about the shaft/grip right now.

Guys...need a little help. They sent me the wrong size screws (I took advice on here for 1/8" and theyre too small) ....can u guys tell, the stock ones are the bigger ones...they look like 1/4"???

I'd stay away from sprinkles. If you use sprinkles you have to give the putter a good stripper name. Plus you'll always have to listen to her tell you about how putting is temporary, she's going to school to be a doctor, blah, blah, blah...

Take the screws to hd or lowes and use their measuring boards. Even if the threads are wrong you can usually figure out sizing from the boards.

Thanks for the advice! i will try doing this tomorrow (forgot the screws at home, already at work)

tonight's mission - torch the weights, possibly go to my grandfathers house to use his buffing wheel...not entirely impressed with the aluminum sole plate just yet.
