Powder or Tip Weights Vs Tungsten Plugs

displayname

Recommended Posts

I'm currently bagging a putter that has weight added to the tip of the shaft to bring up the swing weight. I'm considering having tungsten plugs installed in the sole to replace the tip weight in the shaft.

I don't know how much weight is currently in the shaft exactly, but I'd imagine it's close to 20-25 grams. Would moving the weight to the sole of the club make a noticeable difference? I feel like the weight in the shaft is moving the COG toward the heel, but it might be all in my head. If anyone has any experience, please let me know. Thanks everyone!

Moving the weight would make the putter feel different. You would have to decide if that is good or bad. 20 gms of weight would not move the CG more than a 1 or 2mm. Not enough to make a difference IMO. Putter feel is a very individualized thing. I have known guys that filled the shaft with sand to increase the overall weight of the putter. Others like all of the weight to be in the head. There are extra heavy putter shafts you can buy. Light weight graphite putter shaft are available. Even putter shafts that are part steel, part graphite. It really comes down to what feels good to you. The putter more than any other club in the bag has no hard and fast rules for weight or weight distribution. You will have to experiment some to find what works best for you.

Thanks for the info! I wish it was easier to experiment with these various options on my gamer. I've never been much of a putter ho, so I just want to be sure before I do anything. I might have to end up getting a second putter for experimenting. Thanks for the input!

Depending on how sure you are that the putter has that much weight in the tip an easier way to experiment might be to remove whatever weight is there and then use lead tape in different configurations to determine what works best for you. Than make your decision about tungsten weights or such. Lead tape is easy to use and fairly cheap compared to having tungsten weights machined to fit your putter and maybe deciding you don't like them after all.
