The BB arrived. 4-W. Naturally I had to use white gloves to unwrap them.

In all seriousness they are beautiful things.

Also the digital scale (except to validate its readings against another scale) is finished.

The head weights of the BB, per my scale:

4 - 251 g

5 - 257

6 - 263

7 - 271

8 - 279

9 - 286

W - 298

So it will take me a few days to get there built. I am debating shafts a little. Modus 105s vs Aerotech players spec which are graduated weights. I like the feel of steel more than graphite but I like the graduated weights making the sw of the shorter clubs higher.

FWIW, here's how my satin / black boron BB weights stack up against yours:

4 - 252 / 255 g

5 - 259 / 261

6 - 266 / 268

7 - 272 / 275

8 - 281 / 284

9 - 289 / 292

W - 299 / 301

PDaddy did the raw change the impact feel/sound much? Lighter is fine. These are clubs that can wear lead tape like a champ. They are tools. The Miuras are art. I like the whole vibe around the Macs. Raw with lead tape seems just right.

They feel the same in my hands. For what it's worth, I've had a chrome and raw set shafted at the same time with the same shaft.

Some claim a raw head feels softer, but I can't tell the difference.

wmblake, I highly advise against graphite with your BBs. Steel has the much better feel. Nippons + BBs...F...T...W!!!

Yeah I have played a lot of graphite - plenty of high end stuff and the feel of steel is just much more alive.

I am just trying to figure out how to moi match this which those shafts make easier. I like long irons with a lighter sw and short irons with a heavier sw.

I've been caddying for a member the last couple weeks that just got a set of titleist 716 mb irons. It's really got me thinking about getting another set of blades, even though I barely play these days. In college I played mp 33s, Cleveland ta 1, up until a ping rep hooked me up on a set of s59s. A teammate has titleist 690s and I loved them. If I was looking to get an older titleist blade set would you recommend 690s or 695. Both are within my current price range. Curious to hear the opinions.

Or should I go with some old school ram tour grind nickels that I always wanted after hitting them at a demo day but never actually purchased. I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Oh lord yes, go with the Rams.

I admit to a certain bias, of course. LOL :pimp:

Thx. That's what I imagined, frankly. Do you play them often? I have had some of my best rounds with these irons even though they have a little weaker lofts. They are my emotional favorite club of all time.

Speaking of Rams, I shafted up my TW276 Golden Rams with the NV105 shafts tonight. Used GolfWorks Tour Set epoxy, which was not the brightest move I've ever made. Stuff sets up super fast, so you have to move rather quickly; you can only do 3 clubs at a time, 4 if you're lucky. Mixed up three different batches of the stuff.

Hope my impatience didn't result in messing up a step somewhere. :stink:

Also, using white ferrules with the thicker consistency tour set epoxy, in a black hue, was perhaps also not such a grand plan. LOL

If I get the chance, I'll be hitting them tomorrow....

I went OB three times on Saturday, too. And two of those were from irons of the tee. You know, an iron. For safety...

The hard thing for me with 'irons for safety' is that is a mindset that doesn't support an aggressive swing so the result is everything gets outta whack. I haven't solved this too well yet. It really requires an assertive target and that whole 'for safety' feeling/thought has to vanish!

One of the OBs was a bit unlucky. I hit the 2i to lay up, but was still worried about it being long, so I aimed out a bit left where I thought there was more space (the hole has a slight dogleg right). The ball kicked a bit left, skipped a lot, and ended up less than 6 inches out-of-bounds.

The other OB iron shot was just dreadful. Blocked massively right off the tee. I suspect I was aiming in the wrong direction.

Bit of a random question, but i can't decide what new bag to get for my BB

Found a really cool old model Miura bag but unfortunately it's out of stock everywhere. New is coming but not that appealing.

I've been fit many times. I sort of grew skeptical of the process... except for putters. I have modus 120s in some honmas and really love them. Now like DeNinney says, these are supposed to be too heavy and too stiff for me but it seems to me that I 'swing to the club' and these shafts bring out my best swings.

This is why I am sort of backing off from my initial thought about Modus 105s. After all this time I still don't know what I like the most!

Whoa now, back up the bus...

...I said you will swing a lighter shaft with higher velocity, given the same swing energy or rather work. I said changing the shaft weight will change your swing tempo and rhythm, and this *may* be an issue if you are used to a certain weight. I also said flex plays a role too. You can overpower a weak flex shaft.

Trust your gut, but I still say go with the 105s ('cause they are lighter) provided that the flex is stiff enough.

Well that was the thing....with my last set of irons i went to great lengths to get fitted. Actually I went to more than 5 different locations, shops and demo sessions etc etc to find the right shaft / lie / loft / length combo.

In the end, somehow i got recommended a shaft which Titleist didn't even offer as stock option. I was told to switch to something else 'very similar' last minute (so i don't have to throw away the stock shaft and buy new shafts) so in the end i just gave up and went Miura instead with whatever spec i got from the fitter.

In hindsight, the worst part was being advised to get +0.5 inch (even tho i'm average height at 5"10) because at the time the extra length fitted my swing / posture

My verdict is, club fitting will only stay valid for 3-6 months, after that our swing will change and what used to be the right spec. will no longer remain so.

Unless you're willing to adjust your clubs loft / lie / length every 6-12 months to keep your clubs fitted to your most current swing - the whole fitting process is a bit overrated because after the initial period, your swing and club spec. don't match anyway

Well, as I hit OB twice, I wouldn't say I was particularly successful!

When I decide to lay up off the tee with an iron, I first convince myself to hit it only as far as the club allows me to, and not go for extra distance. In other words, normal swing and nothing more.

The 2i is a bit of an experiment, and it's still a work in process. Might get abandoned in a month or two.

Hey gang, might not be the best place to pose this question but what the hell.

I've got a set of Miura retro tourney blades I'm considering selling. I fell in love with the new cobras and hate to see these not getting used.

My question is, would I grow or shrink my market by selling heads only? They have KBS tour x-stiff in them now so nothing out of the ordinary. Just curious if the average person looking for Miura's would be that particular about shafts that it may help to sell as heads only.

Thanks in advance for any input.

1999 Hogan Apex is right in your budget and are stellar. Titleist 681's are more money but are also fantastic. TM RAC MB are in budget and are a great blend of MB performance and CB forgiveness.

@Caddykev I recently picked up clean sets of Titleist 690.MBs and Mizuno MP 14s. Less than $250 for both delivered. There are some great bargains out there. My prior experience with blades was some Wilson FG-17s, which I like very much and hit well.

The .MBs are very forgiving for blades with a very pleasant feel. The Nippon NS 970 S shafts that came in those are really lively and make for a great club A lot of what I read on here held the 690s in very high esteem, and after hitting them I can see why.

The MP 14s speak for themselves, great head shape, grind, etc. Mine came shafted with DG S300, and for me that combination just doesn't have the active feel of the Nippon shaft in the MBs. It just felt stiff and harsh comparatively. I'm planning on reshafting with some Nippon 8950 S shafts.

Good luck, there are some great clubs available out there.

There are some sets of Golden Rams on fleabay. Not as many as when Watson nearly won the Open Championship eight years ago, but they're out there. :)

Another update, have started butt trimming these. I'm going to go with a 38.25" 5 iron, before grip, which matches up the length with my TM TP MC set. I'll probably also have the MC's bent a bit, taking the 3 iron 2° strong, the 4 iron 1° strong, and the PW 1° strong. This will match them up well with the lofts of my TW276 set, with the TMs being one club stronger than the Rams. I'll just have to play my Ram 50° GW with the TMs. Which I'm doing right now, anyway. LOL

The length will let me take off some of the lead tape, but not all of it, except for the 1 iron, which is coming in lighter. I'm cutting it to 2 iron length, so that's not surprising; it will be a more normal 1 iron club length (instead of overlength like the rest of the set), and the Precision 7.0 that was in it is quite a bit heavier than the 105g of the NV now in it.

Looks like rain showers this afternoon, so I'm putting off my range or course session until another day, unless I hit the course for a few holes around 7pm.

Ghost, I think you definitely expand market by offering to split the shafts/heads. x flex is pretty small crowd. Plus if you don't remove until a buyer comes along you can attract both the people who want the club and those who just want the heads.

PS: it's good to be old! On my way to Los Verdes, an LA county course, with 18 holes of ocean view, with my new green fee rate for being an old fart at $16.50. Gonna play till dark. 27+. Walking. I'll be thrashed. Hide the women and the goats.

Isn't getting thrashed extra on LA golf courses?
