I was hitting .5 inch over during my TaylorMade fitting, so I think I will do .5 over on the UST Recoil F4 and see how that does.

So… basically Wilson Staff blades from that era? The W/S don’t have a very thick sole and aren’t Endo forged, but the offset and muscle are defining characteristics to me. Would make sense given Payne’s history with them.

Bit of a tangent, but can I get a little feedback about what specific smaller channel brands offer in terms of build quality and which are good to deal with when it comes to issues with builds or any defects?

 

Thinking about trying Takomo's, which seem to have a good rep so far if not great resale, but never hurts to have insight. I don't think I've seen a single issue with Muiras on here other than tapping a hole in the bank account. Maltby's I only recall seeing positive things about as well. Can't recall any actual customer service issues with New Level, only a bump in price that doesn't really align with the value per se. KZG on the other hand seem to be a nightmare to deal with at almost every level.

 

Any other insights on DTC/non major OEM blade quality and customer service?

It's the MS/MP-5s that have more offset; I don't know if Payne ever tried those out.

 

Now the MS/MP-4s are a little like Staff blades from that time. The muscle is certainly similar, sweeping up slightly towards the toe. Perhaps the biggest difference is that the MS/MP-4s have more trail-edge relief on the toe side.

 

I hadn't thought about the similarity between the MS4s and Wilson Staffs, but know you've mentioned it, I realise that one thing I like about these Mizunos is the look of the short irons at address: little offset and not bulky looking like many Japanese irons of the period. In fact, they look a lot like my Eighties Wilson staff short irons, which are my favourite of all my iron sets.

A golf buddy I occasionally play with randomly mentioned he had an old set of Titleist blades that he would never hit if I would like them.  Naturally, I thanked him and said sure.

 

Two weeks later I see him and he pulls a pristine set of original 690 MB’s out of the car and says, “here’s those irons”.  Apparently clubs were played for 2-3 rounds and put in a closet for the past 18 years.  3-P all in the pictured condition.

 

Awesome random gift to receive for a golf nerd/blade enthusiast!

I’d say I am out of touch, but I have a package on a plane right now coming from the land of the rising sun so I am pretty up to speed on what is around (It killed me to send over a package sans a putter, but for the last month I couldn’t find one on auction compelling enough).   Toura I have never heard of or seen, is it new?

I remember when those came out. I wanted a set so bad. Ernie Els played them. What an incredible find. Hope they play well for you.

Look great, I’ve played 545’s, 745’s, and currently 785, Z Forged combo and have enjoyed all.  I love the Z Forged, forgiving for a blade with great feel and workability.

I think Toura is pushing whoever supplied Geotech with forged irons back in the 2010 era. They're semi recent. Welcome back Big. Been wondering if you had gotten lost in the Everglades
