My setup below - 14 clubs which is max.

What do you think about it?

Loving the 3-PW irons so far.

I think a couple of things:

  • my 5 wood is 19 degrees, and 3 iron is 21
  • PW 47, 52 and 58, i feel this setup is quite good for me, however could bend wedges to 53 & 59 for a small adjustment

More interested in your thoughts in the long stuff as you say :)

What could be optimized

Based just off degrees, I'd say your wedge set up is fine.

What distance gap do you have between your 5w and 3i, and how often do you find yourself needing to hit an "in-between" shot per round? In other words, how often do you wish you had a different club instead of either the 3i or 5w. If the answer is "not often", then I'd say you're fine as you are.

Thanks.

Not often is probably the answer. So was just asking around. My 3iron is only 190 yards and 5wood is 215 yards ish.

I think that it's probably fine.

Just wondered about the 2 degree change in loft overall. But it makes sense with a longer shaft in the 5W.

So I did an experiment this weekend...

Largely because I'm still not sold on being able to play Super Peening Blue X long term, I put my TM MC irons in the bag, which have DGS400. Because of a funeral on Friday and junky weather otherwise, I only got 9 holes in Sunday afternoon.

And.... there was no real difference in my using the MC irons and my previous efforts with the Rams. Sure, I hit a 9 iron on the uphill 133 yd par 3, instead of the 8 iron I'd have hit with the Rams, but the lofts are essentially the same. Or hitting 8 iron downwind for my second shot on the 9th hole, where I'd have hit 7 iron with the Rams.

And the feel isn't as good with the TMs as it is with the Rams. Which almost goes without saying. LOL

The other interesting thing from the 9 holes... apparently you can spin back a Wilson Staff 50 Elite ball if you hit it just so. I hit a 50° shot with one, it took a hop and spun back some 7 or 8 feet. Bit of a surprise. Guess I should clean my iron club faces a bit more often. ;)

I got to play saturday and had to sit around sulking and cleaning house sunday because of the rain. Hit my long irons much better. Few crappy tee shots and some mental mistakes but all around good round full of ups and downs lol. Still, pulling that butterknife 3 iron out is a mind game haha. Once my new sticks arrive, i'll have time to get the 33s regripped and LLL checked to be ready to throw back in the bag at some point.

The 2 iron is lying in the floorboard of my truck, all alone. I feel bad for it but after the way I've treated it, I'm sure it would throw some shivers up my spine given the change lol

I went OB three times on Saturday, too. And two of those were from irons of the tee. You know, an iron. For safety...

The hard thing for me with 'irons for safety' is that is a mindset that doesn't support an aggressive swing so the result is everything gets outta whack. I haven't solved this too well yet. It really requires an assertive target and that whole 'for safety' feeling/thought has to vanish!

Agreed. It's easy to swing out of your shoes when using irons off the tee box.

I've been having that problem more with driver these days. I think it's a combination of my attempting to shorten the length of my backswing and having put a ProtoPype shaft in my driver. The sight of a quality drive on a proper and less aggressive swing apparently hasn't quite sunk in to my brain yet.

I agree. I have no issues taking 4i or 2i out of the box on par 4s but I have to have a target or landing area in my head. Sometimes if a Par 4 bottlenecks Ill figure what the yardage would be to the 150yd marker and pick the club accordingly. Seems to alleviate the stress of an iron out of the box. Makes it feel much more like a par3. Kinda same concept with chipping. If I want to land a chip 20 yards short of the pin but all Im looking at, is the pin. Im going to fly the sucker to the pin if not further and right off the green.

I actually hit my driver straighter and more consistently when I swing as fast as I can. For me the aggressive moment in the swing is just before and through impact. This doesn't mean as fast a backswing or transition as I can make but I this whole tempo does need to stay balanced so this can't be overly slow... At least that's how it feels when I am hitting it my best. The other BIG key is confidence - just no hold back, no guiding, etc.

Belated happy birthday, dude :)

That's very likely because your "as fast as you can" is being done properly, while my "as fast as I can" leads to tension, too firm a grip, in some many/most cases a tendency for a ridiculous overswing, and a considered and significant reduction in accuracy.

I fought an enormous overswinging problem the first 9 years I was in the game. Being able to cut that down led to the period where I was at my best in terms of distance. I actually found some cartoonish distance in me I didn't know I had.

Age is taking care of that now, though. LOL

(need to get back in the gym)

I tried that short back swing for awhile. Although it never really effected my overall distance, it did however feel completely wrong. Just an unfishined feeling. I have always dafulted to a stiffer flex in the driver due to the over swinging. It worked. Now I'm back to using a deep 3+ off the tee box which I've had really really good results with in the past. I'm even half tempted to purchase Wishons 919FD @ 11° for kicks as a cheap experiment @ 42" length and a D4-D6 SW.

I've done something like that, I have a 12° Tour Edge E8 Beta fairway wood that I used as a primary tee club for a couple months. Turns out that, while the E8 Beta is low spin for a fairway wood, it's not low enough spin for me compared to a driver, so I had to return to the driver level.

I've been noticing in my tee game of late that some of my drives show the classic signs of not staying in the air long enough. It's quite possible my swing change, such as it is, is producing less spin than I had previously. The ProtoPype 80X could be also responsible with its low trajectory and low spin reputation.

I've been toying with taking my Fly-Z+ out for a spin again, I could do so with the ProtoPype; I've thought the Fly-Z+ showed signs of a bit more spin than the LTD has done. Which is part of why I sprung for the LTD. :pimp: Maybe it would be a quality match?

Maybe I'm overthinking this. Oh, who am I kidding. This is WRX. Of course I am. LOL

Would be ironic as hell if it turned out I didn't need the to chase low spin any longer. I've already got the LTD at 10.5°, I suppose I should just try it at 11.5° and see what I get. :)

I dunno why and it isn't always the case, but in general the tee box is like my private sex room with my favorite goat. Out on the fairway and in the rough the she usually leaves me alone, but for whatever reason I get to humping her off the tee.

Along the lines of the earlier discussion, I've done a bit with three of my drivers...

I've removed the cotton from my LTD, and plugged in the HZRDUS 75 shaft that came with it. It now plays 44.5" and D5

I've added a second weight (9g) to the sole of my Fly-Z+ and plugged in the ProtoPype 80 that I'd been using in my LTD. It now plays 43.75" at D5.5

I've taken the Motore Speeder 7.0 I have lying around and plugged it into my R9 SuperDeep, reconfiguring the MWT weights for a proper swingweight. It now plays 44.5" and D6

And I'll mess around with those for a while, see what I get. LOL

I've been caddying for a member the last couple weeks that just got a set of titleist 716 mb irons. It's really got me thinking about getting another set of blades, even though I barely play these days. In college I played mp 33s, Cleveland ta 1, up until a ping rep hooked me up on a set of s59s. A teammate has titleist 690s and I loved them. If I was looking to get an older titleist blade set would you recommend 690s or 695. Both are within my current price range. Curious to hear the opinions.

I love doing that kind of fiddling around ... and I rarely actually reach a conclusion. There are just so many variables. My swing changes day to day, can't really measure what you're getting unless you're playing (or have a trackman and good balls). But I still love doing it. I know a guy whose tagline on his profile is 'interests: Taking perfectly good golf clubs apart, and shuffling, shuffling.." That's it in a nut shell. Beats hanging out in a pool hall.

The BB arrived. 4-W. Naturally I had to use white gloves to unwrap them.

In all seriousness they are beautiful things.

Also the digital scale (except to validate its readings against another scale) is finished.

The head weights of the BB, per my scale:

4 - 251 g

5 - 257

6 - 263

7 - 271

8 - 279

9 - 286

W - 298

So it will take me a few days to get there built. I am debating shafts a little. Modus 105s vs Aerotech players spec which are graduated weights. I like the feel of steel more than graphite but I like the graduated weights making the sw of the shorter clubs higher.

wmblake,

the white flower print gloves made me smile, especially considering that these heads are going to be beating the earth in the near future. I look forward to the final build.

Continental Golf stripped my Macs down to a raw finish. I had them clean up dings and dents and the heads returned looking brand spanking new. I lost 2 - 4 grams of weight per head through the process. The crew at Continental has refinished many clubs for me (they will have two of my putters in a few days) and I've never been disappointed.

Alrighty, 2 rounds in with the mp-14s....an 80 and an 81....brought my 8802 putter along and literally had the ball to the lip if the cup on like 10 birdy putts, ironically, the only one i sank was a chip in from about 25 yards with a 59' wedge.

I ditched the 2 iron to try out a cobra ltd 4/5 wood and after yesterday, that club shall be firmly in the bag. I love my 2 iron, but i was hitting the green in 2 on long par 5s. Had i not had 2 double bogeys (one of my balls hit the green, bounced off and over into water, then on a par three killed a ball only to have sone f****** wizard cast some spell to make the wind swirl to the height of the sears towers bastxxx child and hit the front of the green and then roll backwards, into the water.

8802 was dead on till about an inch from the cup then it would choose to chill there instead of taking the plunge.

Mp-14s, again, were simply magical. No words can describe how good they felt, and ive been gaming mp 5, mp 4, mp 33, and even mp 29 till last week. The grips were softer than my mp 4 and mp 33 grips. I love my mp 14s

PDaddy did the raw change the impact feel/sound much? Lighter is fine. These are clubs that can wear lead tape like a champ. They are tools. The Miuras are art. I like the whole vibe around the Macs. Raw with lead tape seems just right.

wmblake, I highly advise against graphite with your BBs. Steel has the much better feel. Nippons + BBs...F...T...W!!!

So anyway, I practiced tonight and those mp29s were still in my club pro shop, so I snapped some 3i compare pics with my satin 'Cal Hottie' BB 3i. I gotta say, the mp29 is as compact of a Mizuno head as any. It is almost as compact as the BB.
