NRJ,

PS - had the same experience with white ferrules and black epoxy the first time around. Never again. Really like the look of the pure grips in combination.

Is there epoxy that isn't black?

Yes, I believe there is. Not that I've ever used it.

NRJ,

Interested in your thoughts on the NV shafts. Picked up a set of NV Protos last year that are waiting for the right head to come along. I have a J40 5 iron shafted as a test club but am not sure where the shafts are headed.

PS - had the same experience with white ferrules and black epoxy the first time around. Never again. Really like the look of the pure grips in combination.

Here's what I wrote a month and a half ago. I haven't hit anything with the NV105 since, but I was impressed enough to give them a shot in my Golden Rams. (and I'm being a bit lazy, as I didn't remember exactly what I posted at the time and didn't want fuzzy memory issues to bleed into the post, lol)

I *do* remember a few shots seeming to fly farther than I expected for that 8 iron. Perhaps it's possible I'll gain a couple mph from dropping some 25g in shaft weight?

I'll add updates as I get to use them. Looks like I may be subbing in 9 hole golf league Thursday afternoon, I might sneak out early to get a full 18 in. Have drivers and these irons to test. :pimp:

NRJ, let us know how those NV105's workout.

Went to the range yesterday, took my Purefit 7 and 8 irons, both shafted with graphite. The 8i has the NV105 stiff, the 7i has an XCaliber Tour X in TS flex.

Both shafts held up under the swing; I leaned on them a couple times to see what I'd get. Based on what I could tell with less than stellar (and wet) range balls, the NV105 appears to help hit the ball lower than does the Axe Tour X. I was hitting with a helping cross wind, so couldn't get any feel for upwind performance, though having most of the balls still wet or damp took care of that also.

I *did* get a couple shots that did an S curve. Just have to love beat up range balls. Outstanding.

The only issue I seemed to have was related to also having a couple steel shafted clubs with me. When I'd grab one of the DGS400 clubs, I'd leave it out right for a bit. If I went to graphite after swinging DGS, I'd pull them left on occasion.

Other than that, everything was pretty straight.

Taking the 8 iron along to the course on Tuesday, will be playing Round Number Two of the season. Woo!

More NV105 update!

Took NV105 with me last night, got 18 holes in somehow. Hit it several times, including a couple shots where I maybe shouldn't have. LOL

Wind was 10-15mph, which gave me some chance for a wind performance check. It got thru headwinds pretty well, even hit a shot that got there when it shouldn't have. The PureFit blade and NV105 seem to deal with the wind better than my TP MC 9 iron (about same loft) with DGS400. It's an interesting thing.

I'm giving some thought to just finishing the set and giving them some play. Which might make my Golden Rams pout a little bit, so maybe I should just reshaft *those* with NV105 shafts. LOL

A last thought... no signs of hooks or the like, I'm not overpowering the NV at all. I've leaned on it a bit here and there and the most that happens is a pull, or a higher trajectory. No lefties. Of course, it's an 8 iron, bit harder to hook an 8. ;)

Is there epoxy that isn't black?

Yep :)

This image is from Hireko.com, the company that acquired Dynacraft. I used to use Dynacraft epoxy back in the day, it was a similar whitish color.

I've posted this before, but repeating myself is one thing I do. :)

When the 681s came out, I had a set of Palmer Original Standards. A fellow WRXer and PGA pro had a set on the wall of his shop. I was struck by how close they were to my Original Standards. Said pro and I did a direct comparison of each iron, except for slight rounding of the edges, they were nearly a perfect match.

After hitting a 681, I have to say I don't get the allure. Seems to be a Tiger thing. <shrug>

I have only had range experience with the 681's. Find them to be quite good especially on the accuracy. It's the only club I have ever hit the 125 yd. flag stick with Did it twice in two sessions. Good trajectory and distance. Flush shots are real nice with that hickory dowel in there. They surprised to the upside and I 'm not a Titleist guy.

Guys I have been searching on the net for a while with no answers....does anybody know when the Miura Baby Blades were released - either in Japan or Worldwide?

I was talking with a friend on how little technology is in irons, especially blades, and got me wondering how old my clubs are

Been searching to page 10 of Google trying to find a Miura product release log with no luck. Thanks in advance!

@SirEdward those are some beauties. I'm surprised to see the MP 4 is that much bigger than the 14 because I didn't think there was that much difference between my 690 and the 14.

@Caddykev I haven't hit the 695. I considered it as there are some good sets available but decided they would not likely work for me. According to some of the posters here who have experience with them, Titleist shifted weight away from the heel and out toward the toe. My miss is most often more towards the heel. Also, the leading edge is sharper and I prefer a rolled edge.

I was close to giving them a try anyway because I'm so happy with the 690s, but then I found a killer deal for the MP 14s.

I have hit the 695MB in comparison to the mp32 and mp67 and it felt too Titleist "clicky" for my tastes. I much prefer the 714MB and 710MB.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the MP 14 feels with the Nippon shafts. I'm trying to smooth out my swing and particularly my transition, and the Nippon shafts just seem to facilitate good results with the easier swing. Such a nice trajectory for me, kind of high but flat on the way up and then it just drops off the table and sits down. I'm hoping the easier swing will help me avoid injuries and let the shaft do some of the work. The DG just seems to wear on my hands, elbows and shoulders by the end of a long practice session.

This is my core theory about shafts: we swing to the club. The trick is to get the rig that encourages your 'best' swing (most effective).

I once thought my (Royal Precision) Rifle 5.0s were smooth compared to DG S300s, and they are, but...my Nippons are even smoother. Now when I play my Rifle sets (mp67s and Retro TBs), I feel like I have to make an aggressive swing in order to feel them load/unload. By comparison, Nippons *almost* feel effortless. I think they suit a long, unrushed swing well.

This is good news to me. I am a huge fan of the original Royal Precision Rifles. My current irons have the good old Rifle 6.0 shafts in them. My old irons (Callaway X18's) have the same shafts in them…my irons before those had, you guessed it, Rifle 6.0 shafts.

I tried the Project X's when they first came out and hated them. They felt hollow, harsh, and 'tinny'. I've always tolerated Dynamic Golds…never really liked them.

I am probably going to go for a fitting after our house sells, and the Nippons will be very high on the must try list for me.

Thanks for the report.

Also one thing nice about Rifles is that I don't think I can overpower them by swinging very aggressively, whereas I think with Nippons I could overpower them with the same "swing as hard as I can" swing. Note also that I only know the NS Pro line and have never tried a Modus. I'd still take Nippons over Rifles, but realize that there may be a limit on how smooth you want a shaft.

Edit: I totally agree about original RP Rifles being great and how Project X Rifles feel tinny and harsh by comparison. Yet another example of a good golf product getting ruined by the business of it.

I know the 1957 version (conforming) was released around 2010, but the Small Blade existed before then with stamping that looked like the Tournament Blade. How long it existed in its old form, I do not know.

Mine don't have the conforming circle on them.....that's all I got hahaha.

Played 9 today...usually don't do that, but it was nice, pulled up at 1:30, was in car at 2:20 to leave....basically lunch. I shot 40 I think, I didn't keep score but you always know where you are. Anyway, a bad double aside(not bad just bad because small mis on iron to a trap, bad out to long putt and 3 putt, should have been bogey max) I hit the ball well. Started off cold and hit a perfect fade drive, then split next fairway, and low and behold I hit or missed by a little all 7, no trouble off tee.....maybe a week and change off is what I needed. I also didn't mis hit an iron, like flushed every on I hit....didn't amount to much as I made no putts and chopped blah, but my miss was a dead push, I lost a few greens that way, like 4 pin high and right of the floor by 3-8yards..... think just lazy hips in effort to really focus on the things from lesson meaning less handsy.

So, aside from the baby blades being super firm in taking the bag back from the staffs, I was kind bummed. Like sure it was close, and I had some errant pushes and tugs, but hell man, not a fat or thin or toe or heel iron, and save for 2 drives off heel and toe and 1 mishit chip, any shot, 37/40off the center, and it still took 40 shots. Just feels like keeping more rounds in the 70s is further away the closer I am disillusioned of thinking. Fwiw, it isn't the mental aspect, that hurdle has long been conquered, it is just where the game falls when the holes are tallied...at the end of the 8th I seriously contemplated trying to play a round just punching the ball around the course in a manner that keeps it in like a tight dispersion and loses like 20% distance... like literally half swing my way around a round and see what I card. Driver too, the whole bag and play normal inside 125 or so.

Looking forward to myjapanese care package though.....new wedges are going right in, new driver too, but I like the maxima rallying late with competition on the way.

@Bigmean Have you ever tried the Maltby type blade grip remover? Saving your old grips should be no problem. Even really old grips tend to come right off. Maltby's is curved, but even the old style flat ones work well.

BTW, I owe you guys a word of thanks. It was informative posts from you, Deninny, Bladehunter and a few others that really helped me make some educated blade purchases. ??

The thing that *might* be mental is, scoring near your best requires the each shot has a clarity and confidence to it. I rarely miss a shot when my mind is clear and confident. It syncs with an inner swing map that is solid. This is hard to describe, but ... it's like the swing or putt or chip is a function of the my mindset. I know how to hit the shot. It's just having the stamina and optimism and focus to really get clear. All kinds of subtle interference can happen and it's not easy to master my thinking on every shot. It's a kind of practice for me. And it relies on some trust in my technique.... this is very hard to do if my technique is poor - which it can get.

The second big mental part for me is rebounding from a missed shot. This always sends some kind of chemistry through my body that drags my optimism and clarity down. It frankly helps to be getting older... short term memory isn't as strong as it was! But I also often need to do things that help my body/mind process this chemistry - from growling to breathing to walking around. I also sometimes think the next shot just needs to be adequate - something I can execute given that I am reacting to a bad shot, just to help right the ship. Sometimes I can do this, sometimes I can't.

Anyway, that's what I find, at least as well as I know how to describe it. Scoring well consistently is a challenge, to be sure.

@Caddykev Unless you are expecting a small, very demanding old school blade I think you will be really happy with the 690s.

@Wmblake Yes sir, I'm finally learning that very thing. I'm looking forward to not fighting my equipment anymore.

A couple teamates in college had them so I'm familiar with them. Used to hit them on the range or at practice all the time but was really attached to my i3 blades and then the s59s so I never made the jump at the time. I was the lone ping guy on the team surrounded by titleist and mizuno blades.

I think the Modus line is for the more aggressive/faster tempo swings and the NS Pro is for the smoother/slower tempo ones. I can only speak from experience with the NS Pro 950 reg flex and 850 stiff flex. I would love to try the Modus, but I wish they offered a 90g version.

They may, but I have a very short backswing and very smooth to start but get fast through the ball and I love nippon. I think they are smoother for everyone in general unless you are a baseball player type. I am a super Nippon fanboy though.

The 105g is worth a try if you're keen on Modus

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the MP 14 feels with the Nippon shafts. I'm trying to smooth out my swing and particularly my transition, and the Nippon shafts just seem to facilitate good results with the easier swing. Such a nice trajectory for me, kind of high but flat on the way up and then it just drops off the table and sits down. I'm hoping the easier swing will help me avoid injuries and let the shaft do some of the work. The DG just seems to wear on my hands, elbows and shoulders by the end of a long practice session.

One thing I like about my 9 wood is the dynalite gold shaft which I imagine is the closest thing I've tried to a steel Nippon shaft. I've wanted to reshaft my DG S300 set of MP 69 with Nippon regular for a while now but I'm not able to get out and play enough to justify the project. But one of these days, Alice...

Yeah those are what I would try if given the choice and opportunity. But wow going to the lighter NS Pro 850s is really working out for me. I'm almost half a club longer with my BB set with them over my 950 set. I love my 850s!!!

In other ho news, I got more GripMaster grips coming. I'm going to try out their new Master Perforated grips. http://www.golfworks.com/the-grip-master-master-perforated-leather-grip/p/GM0008/ Has anybody tried these yet? I'm not sure if I will put them on my satin BBs or Retro TBs yet. I also got the kidd leather ones for my wife's set. I'm going all-in on leather now. Can't wait.

Wow that sounds like an awesome combo. mp69s + Reg flex Nippons would feel so good. I have hit a lot of blades with S300s and I can say without any doubt that they are not a good feeling shaft for me. I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that I don't like about S300s, but I'm just never impressed with how they feel. I feel the same way about KBS shafts too. If I ever decide to try TT shafts I would start at the Dynalites.
