Contemplating changing shafts...input needed

Ok here's the whole story...I will try to make it short.

Been playing golf my whole life, I'm not new to the game or any of the concepts regarding club setups.

I hit a set of 712 MBs that I will probably never get rid of.

For the past 3 years, I've been on a good workout program and increased my clubhead speed to 112 (driver) and 84 (irons). I'm 6'1 and 180lbs, athletic, but not "strong" by any means.

This was enough to warrant going to some DG X100s, as well as UST Attas T2 6/8X shafts in my woods. I loved them and they seemed to be the best shafts I had ever used as far as distance, trajectory, and dispersion goes. Also, with my attack angle, I have always hit the ball fairly high and wanted to bring it down some. These shafts did exactly that, and I was pleased with everything.

Fast forward to this year...I stopped working out (got a real job), but still play daily. My clubhead speed has dropped to around 80mph with my irons and 100mph with driver. HOWEVER, all my distances are still the same somehow. I hit my 7 iron exactly 170, and carry driver around 270 on average. That being said, my ball flight has dropped lower than I would like with all the irons throughout the bag, and I'm obviously not loading these X100s enough to take full advantage of them anymore. Over the past few months, they seem to be more and more harsh as my SS is dropping a little, and I feel like I'm having to labor just to swing them and get the ball up.

All I'm wanting to do is get the ball flight back up a LITTLE with my irons without having them balloon on me. Should I jump back down to an S300 or S400, or would soft stepping the X100s (even twice) bring the ball flight up ANY at all?

I'm not hitting line drive thin shots, everything is still flush and in the center of the face with a decent angle of attack. This goes the same for the shafts in my woods. But then I wonder how I'm still hitting the woods the way I am with X shafts combined with such a slow SS? If you look at the data, I should be fitted to a Stiff shaft all day, not an X. However, any stiff shafts I've tried in the woods have always made the ball balloon, no matter where I position the ball in my stance. Would I see any benefit of trying to get back into a really low launching Stiff shaft? If so, please list which options you would recommend.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this, and any advice is appreciated.

Yes, driver is adjustable and have already lofted up to around 9.25 degrees. According to the Trackman, that's as high as I can go without losing any more carry. It's fine for now, I'm mainly just trying to get some different shafts in the irons. The KBS tours are an option, I'm just concerned that I would put one or two of them in and then not like them. I've played DGs my entire life and play the s400s in my wedges, so I already know that I like that weight and feel. Just wasn't sure exactly how much more height I would get out of them compared to my X100s. I guess soft stepping the X100s is would be a waste of time at this point?

My buddy softstepped his x-100's and it helped him tremendously. May have been a mind thing, but he definitely felt he could load the shafts better and concentrate on a nice smooth swing rather than having to hit everything at 100%.

Personally I really like the kbs shafts. Smooth but not loose by any means, and I prefer 120-130 gram shafts which they have. Currently playing the projext x shafts that my irons came with, results are good, feel is not. I may go back to kbs tour with a softstepped x flex to get a better feel but same dispersion as the project x shafts.

Man, reading my last sentence really made me realize what this site has done to me, ha!

Good luck. If you can pull and install your own shafts it is easier and more cost effective. If I can do it, I know others can. It's been fun to tinker around, and the iron shafts we are talking about are not too costly. The nicer graphite shafts are out of my league.

I was in the same boat. (and i literally just posted a thing on this 40 min ago). S300s were too whippy for me and x100's were too boardy and hard to launch. But i like the stabilty of an x shaft. I tried the KBS tours and it was perfection. Stable ball flight with high launch and perfect spin and really smooth feel. I'm telling you the tour x is what you're looking for.

Awesome, that's exactly what I was wanting to hear. Texchad, which weight/flex of the KBS tours are you playing? I see you're in Dallas, I spend a lot of time playing in the metroplex but mainly the Ft. Worth area.

Padget, yes I can do all of the work. So if I soft step them, so it will be an overnight deal. If it works how I want it to, I will just grab another shaft for the 3i and do the full set. I may end up trying a set of the KBS tours just because of all the good things I've heard of them. Just not sure what flex I should get without being able to try them out first.

One more thing, when I go to soft step them, I'm just butt trimming the shaft to the length of the shaft I'm replacing, correct?

I'm playing the x stiff tour (i believe its a 130 weight). They should have them available to try at any PGA tour superstore or golf galaxy. I play in the fort worth area occasionally. Played fossil creek and iron horse not too long ago
