Titleist Tour Dept. 11.5* 907 D1 + D2 - Pics & Initial Impressions

Springbok

Recommended Posts

I don't think the 11.5's have hit stores (or eBay yet), but I got mine yesterday, and here are my initial impressions:

What is evident is that the 907's are definitely more open than my Superquad. I had to alter my swing, otherwise I lost them right. That being said, once I did that, I hit them well. I have to preface all of this by saying that the range balls I used were not very good at all, and I would have loved to have had proper balls to hit with.

BTW: My current driver is an 11.5* TM Superquad with Accuflex Creation S.

Looks

D2 clearly is the winner here. You can't beat a traditional pear shape in a driver. It's the main reason I have loved Titleist drivers from the 975J.

Distance

Distance was about equal on the range. The range is not flat, so bounce and landing location definitely is a factor, but I could not say that either of the 3 was noticeably longer or shorter.

Trajectory

The D2 had the best trajectory of the 3 for me. The D1 was the lowest. The D1's spin is noticeably less than the other 2 (for me). The D2 did seem to spin a little less than the SQ.

Dispersion

As mentioned, I had to alter my swing in order to turn the ball over with the D1 and D2. Once I did, I hit them both well, but was hooking my SQ. I changed the weight configuration on the SQ to be toe weighted, and that helped. I would have to say that the D2 won in the dispersion department. I tended to lose the D1 a little right on some shots. I do think though that the D1 does look a little more open at address than the D2.

Forgiveness

This was really the only category where I felt like the SQ had an advantage over the 907's. On miss-hits, the SQ kept it's line better, and had more distance. This may be due to the fact that the Creation in the 907's played noticeably stiffer.

Feel

Hands down the D2 is a winner here. I have always loved the feel of the traditional Titleists. I would say the SQ was 2nd, but it may simply have been because of the sound from the D1.

Sound

D2 was the winner again. A nice solid thump, like all its predecessors. I don't mind the D1 sound. I think the loud sound it makes actually makes you feel more powerful.

Overall

When nutted the D2 would be my driver of choice. It feels so solid, and I love the sound, looks, trajectory, and dispersion. I did not have a chance to hit iron shots with my altered swing. I will do that tomorrow. I am also going to try adding some lead tape to the heel. I tried that on the range, but because of the humidity, it would not stick on the 907's. Hopefully that will allow me to keep the same swing. My SQ is D4.5, and since the 907's are D2, I have some weight to work with.

I want to restate the fact that these are "initial" impressions. I am going to take all 3 clubs to the launch monitor here at Edwin Watts, and get some numbers. Also, I am going to be playing about 6 rounds of golf in the next 2 weeks (my father is visiting), so I will get a better indication of how they perform. I am also going to try and find a range that has some decent balls, and do a more thorough test. I may make a trip to Orange County National, specifically for that purpose. I will give you another update in about 2 weeks.

D2 is a great looking stick. Might have to give that one a swing sometime.

Nice review, and as always nice pics. Are the Creation shafts inserted full bore?

Good review. I found your comparisons between the D1 and D2 pretty close to my own. The D2 looks great and sounds great, but I did find the D1 to be easier for me to hit. I was going to do a lengthy review, but I really have nothing new to say that already hasn't been stated. I did compare my R to the D1 and D2 on the range for some in depth trials. All three seemed to be about the same length but, the D1 just took off like a rocket once it hit the ground. After hitting all three I can really see the spin that the R puts on the ball compared to the D1. The R feels solid and strong while the D1 feels light and springy and the ball visually looks faster off the face of the D1. The biggest adjustment that I can easily correct with some grip tape is the smaller butt diameter of the Vs proto versus the V2. The grip feels noticeably smaller. Another adjust from the R to the D1 is that I need to tee the ball a fraction higher (I tend to tee the ball very low anyway, so this adjustment is for the best). Basically I would love to bag the D2 for looks and sound, but I just couldn't leave the forgiveness of the D1 on the table.

After finally placing down the D1 pictures never gave it justice how truly UGLY the it is, and even though Titleist claims its not hook faced, it sure as hell looks about a degree closed.

I do not think that the D1 is closed. I think that it can sit closed depending on how you put the driver down on the ground. I think it depends on the lie angle at address. If that makes any sense!
