Have You Ever REALLY Lost Your Temper On Course?

Recommended Posts

99.99% of the time I am focused, and can put things behind me regardless of what it is. In the 20+ years I have been playing, only 1 time I remember losing my temper. After I missed a putt inside 3 feet, and it was the third one that round inside 3 feet that I missed...I snapped my putter in half and just left it there (was in my early 20's with cheap putter, now I'm in my late 30's with a $500 putter...can't see it happening again). Not a bad track record over a 20+ year span considering some of the things we as golfers happen to run in to on occasion. Any stories?

Once. Many years ago before I had even tried to develop any sort of golf swing I was playing with some buddies and I fatted a 3 iron off the tee and proceeded to beat the ground with an overhead, two-handed chopping motion a few times. Nobody said a word. I felt appropriately foolish. A few holes later one of the guys casually referred to me as iron beater. We all burst out laughing. I didn't forget what not to do though.

Started club championships when I was 22 years old with a 2 on the par 4 first hole. Jarred a wedge from 70 yards. Par on the next two holes, 2 under through 3, feeling good. Proceed to go +12 thru the next 10 holes. Get to the 15th hole and 3 jack for another double bogey. There's a pond conveniently located next to the green, just give the putter a couple good loops for momentum and let it fly. Did it so casually my playing partners didn't even notice until I pulled driver to putt on 16. Couple of two putt pars on 16 and 17 and make a 15 footer for birdie on 18. Was DQ'ed for round two after drowning my putter.

Asked differently....... At what handicap should you be ALLOWED to be angry with yourself for inconsistent play?
We are all the leaders in charge of our own mind. Anyone is allowed to punish themselves mentally or physically for any reason the brain can give it to. But most with a low handicap, do tend to have better discipline.

Many stories...lets just say all I had left after an episode was my putter...I've grown up a lot and haven't had story of anger in a long time.

Is it called something else when the tournament committee head calls you up and tells you you've been disqualified for the second round?

I guess that you were very sternly asked to WD or make sure you were too ill to play day 2. So missing your anointed tee time would cause a DQ.

Yes, I still give a 10 yd toss to club and after my visit here today. Its time for me to grow up, best said line...NOT golfing for a living.

Although I'll occasionally throw out a perfectly timed expletive, I never really get over the top mad, especially on the golf course.

I figure if the worse thing that happens to me is a double bogey, it's been a pretty good day.

I do encourage my opponents to throw clubs and whatnot. When they really start to boil over, I try to remind them exactly why they're angry.

Mind games, love 'em.

More then 20+ years ago I recall taking a divot/clump out of a green with my putter after missing a one foot putt, tossing a 60 deg wedge after whiffing and swearing frequently.
Nowhere near that level of caring about my golf performance in the last 15 years or so and pretty much just enjoy being out there with a buddy enjoying the time.

Probably a few times - having seen an occasional playing partner and jackass, a middel aged sales professional having a sobbing fit after taking 4 to get out of a bunker, I have decided that cradling a Vokey and blurting out 'why, why, why' is ot a good look for a man in a polyester shirt.

I live in the midst of mountains & National Forest territory, and we have been in a severe drought for several years. Because of the extreme dryness, it's not unusual for our Board & Director of Golf to ban ANY smoking outdoors during our windy dry Spring season (& that rule is countywide, not just our golf course). We have one particular member who absolutely believes that rules do not apply to him. While playing one day during this time, I spotted him smoking while playing. When he was out of the cart I asked the guy driving the cart why he hadn't said something to this clown for smoking. He said, "Not me, I'm not about to get him all riled up". After getting riled up myself, on the next hole our two carts passed each other on the cart path & I point blank called the guy an A$$hole & to put the cigarette out. Evidently I totally ruined his game after that, & he didn't speak to me for weeks.

Actually, after about a month he apologized to me. Seems he told his wife (who doesn't golf) what I'd called him & said, and she said, "Well were you smoking on the course during the smoking ban?" And he said yes. She said...well, I guess you were an A$$hole huh? We hugged & made up shortly after that, but that's about the maddest I've ever been on a golf course. We take our fire season here very seriously. We've had to evacuate our home several times since we've lived here and it's nothing to take lightly. Several hundred homes have been lost in fires here.

I can remember truly losing it once when I was a junior, I put an iron through the club secretary's window because I had just lost the jnr club championship and tickets to watch the Ryder cup. I lost out due to an asinine ruling and was quite upset, as you can imagine.

My dad was out on the course with my sister and when he got back he beat me so hard with that iron in the car park it snapped. I can still feel it and have never really lost my temper since.

I still curse loudly once every other round or so (for flubbing a shot) but my anger lasts about 15 seconds and then I laugh it off

I did have a kid lose it and charge me 30 years ago, which resulted in a fist fight .. but I didn't lose my temper

I won't play with anyone with temper issues, life is too short for d-bags

Once.......only once. Was playing with friends many years ago when I was a younger man and I was playing horribly. Chunked a wedge shot and helicoptered my wedge about 40-50 yards. It didn't break thankfully. Now I just grimace or might drop a low f-bomb but never have really lost my temper again. My friends love to remind me of that club toss and laugh at me. Meanwhile a couple of them are total hotheads on the course.

You probably know this, but you just made a good case for not loosing one's temper or saying what can't be taken back. People never forget bad behavior. Funny how they easily overlook good behavior.

So true. My big meltdown came the one time I had the chance to golf with an acquaintance who is a terrific golfer (has won the City Am) as well as a really nice guy. Now every time I see the guy, I think of the lousy impression I made that day, and basically the embarrassment shuts me down. To this guy, I will forever be "that guy."

It was 12th or 13th hole, after a perfect drive... I shanked my approach shot, and then let out the frustration with a sharp hit on my golf bag with the wedge that had failed me. Five minutes later, at the next tee, I pull out my 3-wood and its shaft is broken about halfway down. "You must have broken it when you hit your golf bag with your wedge," the guy I was playing with told me. Welcome to ****** City, population: me.
Yeah, that's true.

I used to lose my temper a lot. I still probably drop the old f-bombs more than most, but I used to be a club thrower, bag thrower, smash the ground with a club guy.

If you ask anyone I started playing with in the last few years, they would probably say I'm emotional, but not a "temper tantrum" guy. The people I've been playing with longer can't drop their image of me as the total hot head.

I'd like to tell people, "don't do it. You'll regret it in the long run" but I understand too well what it's like to have a temper. It's the "red friend", the "dark passenger". People who have never had a temper don't realize how pointless it is to tell someone with a temper, "grow up" or "get over it" or "its just a game". Might as well tell an alcoholic, "you can have a good time just having soda".

So true...

Though off topic, that's is, in part, why many men and women are rejected from various forms of Law Enforcement/3-ltr agencies, and other positions that test. Sadly, however, some do sneak though screening. But, most clinical professionals can see it relatively quit. Though not talked about, it still shows its ugly fact on the PGA tour too. Cause is almost always rooted in childhood.

At the age of 18 I launched a driver at a tree having missed every fairway that day. Snapped the driver in half - the tree survived. 42 years on and I don't do that sort of thing any more!

Only once that I can really remember. I was playing poorly, but not historically bad, during a tournament (it was handicapped, so I still had an outside chance at placing in the net category). Got to the tee box on 16 and realized that I'd lost my cell phone. I was walking, and it had fallen out of my bag. I knew that I had it on 15 tee (I use golfshot to input my hole statistics on the tee box of the next hole) so I knew I lost it somewhere on hole 15. The problem was that I hit my drive right and in to the junk, so my phone fell out into the tall grass/reeds while I was searching for my ball. I hit my tee shot on #16 and then ran back to #15 to look for my phone. Couldn't find it. Ran back to #16 to play my 2nd shot, then ran back to #15 to look again. I would have just left it and come back after the round, but it was going to rain in the next 45 minutes and I didn't want it to get destroyed. So I went back to #16, and 3 jacked for a bogey. I was so angry at losing my phone AND three jacking the 10ft putt (it was as close an approach shot as I'd hit all day, so I thought maybe I'd just finish the round and run back to get my phone afterall) that I sidearm tossed my putter in the general direction of my bag, but WAYYYY too hard. It hit a tree and bent in half. I was mortified and steaming. I withdrew from the tournament and went back to #15 and started looking for my phone. I searched for 40 solid minutes before I finally found it, thankfully. And I beat the rain by about 15 minutes.

Only club I've ever broken, and it had to be my most expensive one.

Over the years I have thrown many a club down the fairway. In the process, I have broken two putters ( seems I was throwing as well as I was putting ) and a driver, my very best persimmon, got hung up high in an oak tree, where it stayed for three weeks before finally falling back to earth. It was presented to me in an embarrassing little proshop ceremony.......
I haven't thrown a club in several years. I just now find myself wondering if that is because I have finally grown up. Or am I just overdue........?
