Best Shaft profile for a fade?

Getting older and after some back surgery gonna switch to a fade this year, just can't draw it as

consistently anymore. In general what type of shaft is better for a fade? heavy and stiff, softer- lighter,

stiff tip, soft tip etc. ? appreciate any thoughts, Btw, for what its worth currently play a Tour AD I 6 stiff,

Super stiff tip has worked for me. Keeps the spin down and keeps the ball from turning left. Results in a predictable shot shape for me and still very long due to the low spin.

Generally it is assumed that a stiffer shaft will aid or inadvertently cause more shots to the right due to the flex profile and the potential not to close the face if you do not have the swing speed for the stiffness.

Now I dont really know if its true or not as I am not a scientist but from real life experience, there is some slight truth to it, but I would say 10% of it is truth.....

In reality I truly feel that a swing and swing path makes more for control of shot shape than shaft flex.

Also things to consider as you stated you are getting older? You may want to look into something lighter, the issue is generally the stiffer the shaft the heavier it gets. The opposite would be with the less flex.

Would getting a shaft that has the weight you are looking for and then swinging in a way to produce the fade be a better option then finding a heavier, stiffer, stout type of shaft and trying to force it to fade for you?


Just curious as I think regardless you can fade any shaft......... Ladies, Seniors, Regular, Stiff, X-stiff, XXXXXX-stiff tipped 9 times........

Easier FOR ME to fade a tip stiff shaft a bit stiffer than normal...

So instead of a stiff for you... I would use a CPM on the high side of stiff... Or the low side of XStiff...


Try an XStiff DVS....

Find something with low torque such as pro force v2 or prolaunch red. Even if you play a regular they will definitely encourage a fade.

The shaft, by itself (assuming identical swings) will in no way contribute to a fade or hook or any left/right tendencies. it can only effect the dynamic loft (launch angle and spin) for those with certain swing characteristics. This is also assuming you are in the rough ball park (+/- at least a full flex or even more) for the correct flex/bend profile for the swing. We are not talking about what might happen if a long drive champ tried a senior flex shaft or anyone else that's off by 3-4 flexes.

The only way it can cause any such results is if the feel of the shaft (either weight or flex) actually causes the player to change their swing in response to that feel. Even in that case, there is no one common cause and effect - such results are completely subjective and each individual can react to a change in feel differently. And for those people, this is also a VERY BAD way to try and control ball flight. This is generally a negative feeling type of feedback and can potentially mess with grip pressure, the quality and consistency of the swing and even possibly club head speed.

From the equipment standpoint, the only thing I would recommend trying to change for that purpose is to try a more open face angle. That is the the one aspect of the equipment specs that is generally the most effective in controlling left/right ball flight. But even that may not be ideal for someone who's swing mechanics support a draw and not a fade. It goes without saying that the best way to change from a draw to a fade is to see a pro and actually change your swing.
