Looking for a New Car

gambit

Recommended Posts

So I finally have to call it quits on my commuter, a 2000 Infiniti I30. I'm looking to replace it with a family car since I need to have 2 car seats. Primarily looking for an SUV or Cross Over type of car. I have a 2001 Suburban which I will never part with, but an 8.1L car just isn't practical for everyday driving and the gas per month would be a car payment. I thought I had my heart set on a 3.6L V6 Outback, but the 2015 models I've been reading the reviews on have pointed out several issues from rattling and wind sounds to lack of storage when compared to previous models. I'm not opposed to the idea of a Sedan, but changing my kids in a hatch and getting things in and out are much easier.

Land Rover Disco Sport, or a Volvo XC60 is where i'd go with that criteria. Both look great (imho) and tick most of the boxes for an all-weather, off-road capable family car they do 90% of what their bigger brothers can at a far more reasonable price.

Personally i'd pay the slight premium to have the LR over the Volvo. It looks stunning in person.

Both cars are nice, but I should've stated that I'd like to stay under $40k.

Want reliability? Toyota or Honda. Subaru is not bad and they have good options for what you need.

A Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna with AWD could be a good option. I'm sure you hate the idea of a minivan. But they're really sensible vehicles.

Definitely don't want a minivan. Just can't bring myself to do it. I was thinking about the RAV4 or CRV. I even kind of dig the Honda Accord Crossover thing.

Did you like your Infiniti/dealer? I had a G35x for 7 years and went right to an FX37. It is a fantastic car, I cant say enough great things about it. Tons of room and the option packages are great - especially like the 360* camera system.

Plus with 330hp, it drives like my G35 did.

Cant recommend this car enough.

Bought my wife a 2014 Nissan Armada to replace her 12 year old Tahoe and couldn't be happier. My 3 little girls spread out in the back seat on long trips and could never do that in the Tahoe. We were always cramped with 1 car seat and 2 boosters.

The third row seat folds down flat for big storage but even with the 3rd row up my wife can fit groceries or whatever.

We got the SL which is middle of the road with leather. You could probably talk them down to $40m.

Subaru right now is riding high. They can't do much wrong right now and

1) is the car company that has cars average of 8 days on lots (Crosstrek) http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2015/02/januarys-fastest-and-slowest-selling-cars.html

2) Highest trade in value (hold value best) and 3) highest marks in safety. http://www.kbb.com/new-cars/best-resale-value-awards/best-resale-compact-car/?r=963673223398284800

I would NOT get the 3.6 Outback though. I would go with the 2.5. While you look at "power" and all that thinking it's important, it's not. The 3.6 Doesn't offer much in terms of acceleration compared to the 2.5, like a second or so. 0-60 isn't really where its at because if you drive normally, you're not going to being doing 0-60 a lot. Gearing on the 2.5 is quite suitable, and ... it's quieter. Take both for a test drive and let me know. The new Outbacks are quiet. Sure, not $40k sedan quiet, but still quiet.

I would also stay away from Toyota for the same reason I'd suggest not going Chevy/GM... recalls. They have gone downhill and maudlin rather fast.

Subaru also ranks highest in reliability... #1 in Reliability http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/Subaru_Outback/

Take one for a test drive and let me know.

I have a Crosstrek, but do not work for Subaru, nor parts suppliers. The last Subaru I had before this was a Baja Turbo 9 years ago. They have come a long way since then.

Toyota recalls are almost always company recalls not govt mandated. They still rank up near the top in overall cost of ownership and reliability . Great warranties on them as well and very safe for your family.

I own 4 Toyota products and couldn't recommend them enough. 3 of the 4 have over 125k miles and all start on first crank in sub zero temps and no leaks or drips on the driveway.

I actually liked my Infiniti a lot. It was a really good car. I mean to make it 240K miles with no major mechanical issues has to be pretty good right? I'll definitely take a look at the FX, but I would think it's out of the range I want to pay right now? I'll take a look to confirm though.

You might to take a peek at the new 2015 Ford Edge... And stay away from Chevy/GM!!! Too many recalls and problems.
If I buy a Ford it would go against everything I've ever believed in...but I can't deny that their cars have a better reputation than Chevy's recently, and the Edge seems to very popular.

Funny...Nissan has never been on my radar, but if it's a good family car I'll look. Everything I'm looking at has be meet high safety standards, decent to good fuel economy, roomy with cargo space, and can fit a push cart and clubs easily.

Interesting, because I always look at the bigger engine. Mostly because I've always felt the bigger the engine the longer it will last. That's why I went with an 8.1L in my Burban. The price difference between the 2.5 and 3.6 is quite a bit though. My main concern would be towing capacity on the smaller engine. Not that I'm towing a whole lot, but a camping trailer or jet ski's. I was actually looking at the Crosstrek too. When I was looking at reviews for the 2015 Outback a lot of people said that the Crosstrek (non-hybrid version) was the better value.

We have a Honda Crosstour that you mentioned earlier... The car is over built, feels solid and sturdy.. Got the 4 cyl and while a little under powered, not bad at all,,, did not get the AWD.... Highly Recommend...

Oh - Have the Honda Pilot too... Hate it! It has issues including the VCM shudder/vibration that Honda says is normal operation... I understand that some don't exhibit this, but it's a risk if you go this route... Thumbs down on the Pilot..

After some quick research this is 100% true and i wouldn't touch a pilot knowing what i know now with a 10' pole.

I have a 2014 Mazda CX5 2.5L AWD w 185hp.

Bought it through Costcos auto program at invoice.

Love it so far. Have 40K on it so far with no complaints. Transmission is silky smooth. Getting 26 city and 28 highway.

I let my mom use it when im away on business. She hauls my nieces around in it no problem. When its in my possession I lay all the seats flat and put my rubber liners back in to protect the interior from my gear. Perfect outdoors vehicle.

IF either Subaru or Mazda would bring their diesels here id hold out for that.

Just an FYI buying through Costco doesn't guarantee the lowest price. Many times you can get a better price through the dealer directly. But if you want a no haggle price then it is an easy way to buy a vehicle.

Not meant to sidetrack the subject.
Also suggest going through truecar.com Wife did this with her FJ Cruiser. Everything is handled ahead of time.

I have a 2015 Subaru outback with the 4 cylinder and love it. I'm 6'3 240 lbs, and have loaded it down with baseball team equipment, golf clubs, and work tools, all at the same time, plenty of room. I would have preferred the 6 cylinder if the price was close, but am doing fine with the 4 cylinder and great gas mileage. Plenty of speed on the highway and cruising, just lacks some pickup compared to bigger engines.

I think it is a very smooth comfortable ride, it does pick up some wind noise but was far from a deal breaker all when comparing the other features.

I was in the same situation, older car had finally had it and wanted some with some room but not quite full size SUV. I had an 04 Tahoe and 07 fusion previously, wanted something in between. I looked at plenty of options and really didn't consider Subaru but went by because the dealership was between the others. I was blown away by how much higher quality and durable the outback felt, and that the pricing was below what I considered their rival in other brands.

Good luck with your search, I would definitely recommend checking out Subaru before you make a decision.

Have a look at a Ford Flex as well. I love everything about them and am looking to get one for my wife's daily driver and do everything family rig.

Though I love my sons. They find my well-modified Mustang a perfect family car. :-)

My buddy has a '14 RAV4 and it is seriously small. Like the trunk looks like that of a VW GTI. He had a baby shortly after buying it and is already regretting not getting a full size SUV.

From a subaru standpoint, I replaced my 08 Audi A4 with a '15 WRX a few months ago and I absolutely love it. The interior build quality is obviously not on par with that of VAG but overall the car is fantastic. Everything besides the interior feels better to me. I would certainly give Subaru a look. You get a lot car for the money.
