Terrible thread.

Don't count other people's extra marital affairs.

Don't worry about how other people spend their sex lives.

Don't create smear threads looking to stir the pot about a guy who has been cleared of any criminal mischief.

Sincerely,

I'm surprised that everyone's piling on the OP. To me, this:

If this was baseball or basketball, I am sure the commissioners would discourage the player from being so close to this person.
is a perfectly valid point. Take Josh Gordon for example. He just got suspended from the NFL for a year for testing positive for alcohol--no matter that he's over 21. Sure the commissioner in golf isn't nearly as powerful as the commissioner in other sports, but I'd still think having articles like that turn up on espn about one of the two most recognizable American golfers would cause some consternation at PGA Tour headquarters. Next thing you know there'll be rumors that Ely Callaway himself paid off Philly Mick's gambling debts as part of his original Callaway deal, back in the pre-private-plane days.

I'm normally not a "jump in the fray" guy, but this really is a valid point. You're representing the organization and any conduct, real or rumored can reflect badly on it. Within golf circles, Phil has been cleared in public opinion. Outside of it, there's no mention of it and he's still a greedy golfer who doesn't have enough money. Perception is reality, true or not. Ask Tiger Woods.

huh?? I am 28 minutes from a casino in Central NY that also has a dog track... along with a few more casinos opening up this year since our Governor didn't want the revenue going to just the Indians. We have OTB as well. The only thing I don't know if we will ever get is a legit sports book. Oh and don't forget Saratoga, NY that is pretty popular for the horse races.

If the thread has moved on from Phil.

I must admit not having travelled extensively in the US for some years until recently, I was surprised about the gambling "laws". If I understand it right, you can't bet over the internet with sports bookmakers? Yet most games I saw, there was reference to spread, odds, covering the spread etc, so who do you bet with? The Aussies I know seem to run their betting through a Canadian ISP or some other method (unsure)

My own assessment is that we have a gambling problem out here in Australia, its all pervasive with poker machines in every pub, football teams sponsored by betting agencies, horse racing around the clock etc. As one poster pointed out, the gambling aspect attached to cricket in the sub continent has manifested itself in an insidious manner on the game.

Just interested in whether you guys see any benefits in the internet restrictions, given it would seem to stop the casual (fun) gambler but not someone who wants to get around it.

There are restrictions here, but these sites find ways around them. Just about anybody can open an account online and place a bet within minutes.

It was definitely a misstep for Phil. I don't want to read too much into it, but if any other stuff start surfacing I am kinda done with him. I am really not digging the old white guys with huge money rigging everything just so they make huge-ier money.
Wait ... How does "old white guys" play into this? If they were young or their skin had more pigment in it, you would be OK with it?
I don't interpret the comment as literally as you but understand the sentiment. The article mentions it too, that other guys his age or that successful are sitting on a beach somewhere. For a lot of these wealthy guys, when is enough enough? You see it in every industry too. Guys making a quarter mil a year with how much in their bank accounts, could retire tomorrow after working for 25-30 years yet still come into worm at 7am, leave at 7pm. Not equating that to breaking the law, but when does it end?
This is America right? Since when is working hard to achieve your goals wrong or unfair? For some that's wealth. Sounds like there's a chip on your shoulder.

Horse Racing, in most jurisdictions, is not considered gambling. It is considered a game of skill. I assume dog racing is similar.

From the IRS Publication above:

1. Horse Racing, Dog Racing, Jai Alai, and Other Wagering Transactions Not Discussed Later

File Form W-2G for every person to whom you pay $600 or more in gambling winnings if the winnings are at least 300 times the amount of the wager. If the person presenting the ticket for payment is the sole owner of the ticket, complete Form W-2G showing the name, address, and TIN of the winner. If regular gambling withholding is required, the winner must sign Form W-2G, under penalties of perjury, stating that he or she is the sole owner and that the information listed on the form is correct. So you've never ever once looked at an individual and thought "hmmm wonder why that guy doesn't just ride off into the sunset and do away with these long hours? He could sure afford to."?

If that's a chip on my shoulder then I'm confident we all have it.

As if our government doesn't get nearly everything wrong they decide to weigh in on. What a freaking joke...

It's gambling- every sane person on the planet knows that. Just a quick look at Arlington Park's website and I see a link that discusses responsible "gaming" along with an 800 number for those who "may have a gambling problem"...
