The XV - Showing Love for Hireko Golf's New Driver / Iron Line?

GameDayDog

Recommended Posts

Was looking in my newest Hireko Golf catalog and noticed the newest line...

After the well received XK, XF and XS lines, they are now introducing the XV.

Yes, they have left handed versions - 9.5, 10.5 & 12 degree lofts.

Right handed versions in - 9.5, 10.5, 12 & 14 degree lofts.

Right handed players also get a - Draw - version.

It has a rear weight port with an removable weight - 2 grams, 7 grams and 12 grams.

This can be yours for the low price of - $124.95.

View the Driver Here

They also have an Acer XV iron line that can be seen here - XV, XV HT (High Trajectory) & XV Pro.

I have a set of Acer XK woods - Driver, 3w, 5w and 7w.
I hit them long and straight - of course, it's usually the indian and not the arrow.

My favorite thing about these products is that Hireko sells individual irons. I probably have 3 or 4 different 7 irons from Hireko and Gigagolf for comparison and testing purposes.

I'm far from a club ho... Whatever I get will probably stay in the bag for 6 or 7 years.

Anyone tried the XV Pro heads yet? I've got some shaft pulls laying around and thinking these might be worth a try. I like the fact that they don't look like clones.

If somebody have hit the mini thriver, let me know how it goes.....
Haven't posted much here, but I just received the mini Thriver today in the mail. Won't get to hit it until Wednesday league tomorrow night and will try to remember to post back afterwards. $84 on ebay, figured I had to try one.

Haven't had much luck with drivers lately. Had the SLDR mini but the face was just way to tall for my liking. The Thriver mini has a much lower profile, close to the Callaway Razr X black 3wd I was using last season.

Was going to get a Callaway mini 1.5 but the price of the Thriver mini made too much [s]cents[/s] sense. :)

Just happy I remembered my login info here lol.

Sorry, forgot to post back...

Well, when I hit the Mini Thriver well it went really well. I had a bad day on the course, nothing about my swing felt like I knew what I was doing. Week before I couldn't miss and was happy to shoot +3 38 only to follow it up with a 48 lol. Didn't help none that I kept trying to watch my shots with the new Thriver mini before I even hit the darn ball. Really happy with the club, I just didn't see much of an advantage over my 913F. I'll continue to game the Thriver, at 13°, I can use the 913F (13.5°) and adjust loft to course needs.

I did end up sending back the Thriver mini though. After the round I noticed the ferrule wasn't fully seated at the hosel and wasn't sure if they just effed it up during the shaft install or if the head was starting to come loose. So, the place I bought it from on ebay paid the return shipping to repair and send back.

Overall, it's worth it IMO if you are looking for something like the mini, but not necessary if you get along with your driver/3wd combo.

Most installers use little to no epoxy on the ferrule and let friction/shaft taper hold the ferrule in place. Unless your club got longer or the shaft twisted, the head is not coming loose.

I bought some XV Pro heads. Don't have them yet but looking forward. Still debating what shafts to team them with. Thinking about going old school Rifles. We'll see...

Played the pro's yet? any pics?

The heads are still on the workbench. I got distracted with some other projects but plan to do some work on them this week. Going to shaft them with some Cleveland 85 pulls I've got laying around. The heads are quite small overall. I was hoping for a little larger.

One thing that has struck me is that the grooves seem kind of shallow. The face is sandblasted for roughness, but rubbing your thumb up the face suggests these heads will be medium-low spin. We'll see. The leading edge is a little sharp for my liking, so I'm going to radius them a little. One thing I like about raw stainless heads is you can do this sort of thing without any concern over the finish.

Okay, got them built. Good looking heads. They remind me of Callaway's. Minimal offset in these, more visible in the short irons.

I killed the leading edge with a file and sandpaper. Doing this has the dual benefit of straightening the leading edge appearance from the playing position.

Next on the agenda is to play them of course, and apply a scotchbrite satin finish. Polished stainless scratches so easily.

Got a chuckle out of the Ping i-E1 thread where everyone is all excited about the newest Pings using "soft" 431 stainless steel. Ha, these Acers are 431, as are millions of other component heads. Nothing new there.

Heads cost $9 each and shafts were some surplus pulls so total cost was reasonable.

First photo below shows the leading edge.

2nd photo shows a comparison of the 5 & 6 which were not filed, the the other clubs that were.

3rd photo shows full set with de-sharpened leading edge.

Going to satinize the entire head with scotchbrite next...

I definitely like the XV cavity design over the XF and XS models. Can't wait to hear how they play.

Just got back from the range and these clubs are SOLID! Really nice sound and feel. Love um. Set them up with a D4 swingweight because the Cleveland shafts are light and the clubs feel great. Total sleeper set. I recently built a set of Yonex Forged i-ezone PB irons w/Recoils and these Acers feel better.

I like these XV's better too because they are less clonish. The XF & XS are uncomfortably similar to Callaways in my opinion.

Thx for the pics, they look good; nice touch with the leading edge.

I have the prophet cb's and have played the react`s .... I know what you mean by the grooves they are def. not very deep, but I've had no issues with spin...they (prophet cb) generate more, than my other set Maltby KE4 Tour's, where the grooves appear noticeably deeper.

The new High-CoR Prophets? I built a 7-iron to play around with. I've had a few people comment they'd like to have it. I like how they split the topline on the CBs so it doesn't look as big as it really is.

Yes...started out with the 7 and was consistent with it and kept in the bag over the ke4 7, which I was not very consistent with, but kept playing 8-gw ke4's (great irons by the way)....built the rest of heads I had 8-gw on apollo stepless and I hit them very well. I did not like the look out of the bubble wrap on the topline, but I don't even notice it now, it's an after thought. Good solid head, forgiving, and if you don't mind a wide sole, these are nice; not much offset either...6 and sw will see some action today.

Hit the XV Pro's again tonight and it's amazing how solid they feel. Took my forged Yonex's along this time and the feel isn't even close.

Trajectory is medium. The Yonex's hit the ball noticeably higher.

Even with the Cleveland shafts that so many people bash these clubs are solid. Sleeper of the year!

Not sure if you've explained this before, but how did you do the satin finish? Did you really get that finish with scotch brite pads by hand? Looks as good as some I've seen with a rotary tool.
Red scotchbrite pad by hand. Masked off the ferrule and face first and watched the brushing direction. Can't say the work is anything special.

BTW, if you click the images it will take you to my Photobucket account. Then click the + sign to magnify the photo(s). You can really see the grain work them.
