2015 US Open Qualifying - WRXers: who's in?

i signed up today to qualify for the US Open...

 

was wondering (couldn't find a thread) if any WRXers are doing the same, where they're looking to qualify, etc.

 

figured we could get conversation going - could help with anyone who may or may not have nerves, practicing tips, getting on for practice, etc.

 

 

i'll be throwing my hat into the NJ local @ Panther Valley Golf & Country Club in Allamuchy, NJ.

this is my first foray into the US Open as well - just breathe, treat it as a normal round, remember you can only control you and the shot at hand.

i'm really good friends (and coach) a 17 year old as well...he's going to be signing up as well.

This will be my second year. Playing in Montana, just treat it like any other tournament..I've played in a few Monday qualifiers as well..the one day things are definitely a different breed!

is it as they say - get on a roll on the back nine of round 1 and ride it through the next 18...?

i've heard if you get hot for one day it could make your life lol

Kind of, but it doesn't always take as much as you think. I was 2 down after 9 last year and saw two eagles on the 18th so figured i had to press the issue..hit it in the water on 10 and ob on 12. Safe to say that wrapped it up for me and 2 under would have been a playoff. I'm not sure about NJ but in Montana not too many people get very much practice time in before..maybe a full month if we're lucky.

[/quote] we have a lot of stiff competition in NJ...im' thinking par in the local will get me through to sectionals - and it will take a solid 3-4 under in the 36 hole slugfest...

The local qualifying will be 18 holes won't it? I think it's not 36 until sectional. If you look at the sectional results it's pretty amazing to see the kind of guys that have go through qualifying. There are some names that you'll recognize from seeing on TV almost every weekend. The best thing to do in these qualifiers is to play it safe and take the opportunities as they come. Most people will get in trouble when they start trying to force this issue. When I qualified for the USGA Mid Am I was even par through 8 with 8 pars, then made a birdie on a par 5. Got it to -3 thru 15 wtih a birdie on a short par 4 and a longer putt on another par 4. Then started trying to force the issue and dropped two shots in the last 3 holes. Luckily I still got in, but I should have played smarter and taken medalist honors home by myself.

I won't be trying for the US Open this year as I'm not familiar with the local qualifying sites and using my time off for the PA State and Philly Association events, but good luck and play smart, it will always give you your best chance.

I am contemplating it. I am not a plus handicapper. Lowest I have been is 0.0 index, which I achieved a couple of months ago. For me to actually make it through to sectional, I would have to have the round of my life. My game however has been coming around. A few more dropped putts, and I know I can break par... but 68-71 won't be enough. Would need to shoot lower than that, and my lowest round ever was a 69.

But still, I would play just for the experience, and the hope that I catch lightning in a bottle.

My experience in locals is that it usually takes 3-4 under to get through to sectional. I got through with 68 (if memory serves)...then crazy eights in sectionals!

Course, that was almost 20 years ago.

My best friend's 17 year old daughter has played in two US Women's Opens, and she will attempt to qualify in this year's as well.

But I don't suppose that counts in this thread. :-)

2015) Qualify for Mi Am, and Mi Open
2016) Qualify for US Am, Contend at State Open/Am (Where ever I'm working that summer)
2017) Qualify for US Open

Another reason my handicap is 4, so I need to work on my game before I am even allowed to play. I think working on qualifying for these events before will help me become a better player and have a better chance at qualifying

Darn this forum. My game came around last summer to about a +3 for June-September and got me thinking about it, but my wedge game from 30-100 yards could be worse than anyone trying to qualify... Plus it is a balmy -3 outside right now.

However, I do not require all that much convincing.
