The person is standing with all the peasants
Do you not see the rope in the picture? It's behind him. He's taking a face-on shot of Bubba.
(If you want to take quality pics, there are some things that need to be learned it appears. He's in position to get a good shot. How many good pics have you seen of someone's back. Very few...)

Edit: And calling those that attend golf tournaments peasants won't go very far either...

What if he is one of the local newspaper photographer, with no budget or wish for big white lenses?

I have also seen pro-photographers with big bellies covering golf tournaments. I have also seen them wearing green shorts, but in more like olive colour, so this can not be pro...

Look at this person taking a picture of Bubba with a DSLR from only a few feet away. This person is not being harassed like myself and numerous other have been at other golf events.

There is clearly a HUGE double-standard on Tour. Some places berate you for cell phones or even taking pictures of a vacant hole, but at others you a very clearly able to walk in with the biggest cameras you can find and take all the pictures you want. This is America where we ought to be free so it is good to see people taking advantage of the freedom that this country affords.

Pretty simple - he's inside the ropes - you're not.

He has more privileges than you do.

Everybody knows that.

Question is whether you understand how to get inside the ropes - and whether you're capable of doing so?

Not inside the ropes. Bubba is on the wrong hole in that pictures

You not only need better understanding of tournaments and how they operate (cater to those who often pay more for access)...but you obviously also need glasses. :)

The guy is simply asking a couple of questions and you are being very rude. Would you respond this way to his face?
After making a point to watch the video footage last night, the answer to your question is yes. I admit I may use different phrases in this hypothetical situation, though. For example: "Do you not see the 2 camera bags on his shoulders and 2 cameras around his neck? I have a hard time believing a man among the peasants would be allowed such privileges, so logic dictates he has media credentials. Oh, and by the way, I think I see a badge around his neck, too".
Then, I might have said something like: "I'm not sure that's how you define freedom or harassment, braddah", just to make sure he knew I lived in Hawaii and I flew a long way not to have silly conversations about freedom while I'm trying to watch a golf tournament.

with modern cell phones, you can't control it. you can't tell people they can't have their cell phones, because there are valid reasons for having it. but in 1 second, you can raise the phone vertically and snap a photo. a volunteer would have to be looking right at you, and even then, he'll ask you to put it away.
I certainly hope you are not serious.

I'm simply amazed at the ignorance that exists today. Couple that with the entitlement attitude and we see why we are having this discussion in this thread.

Permitting cells phones at tour events is something that has only been allowed for a few years now. Prior to that you COULD NOT bring a cell phone into a PGA Tour event. If one was found on you at the gate, it was confiscated and you could pick it up on your way out.

But people would, like, die without their cell phones for 5 minutes.
Do you people really think a pro shoots with a camera around the neck? LOL

Also, for context, Bubba is in a bunker on the right side of hole #1 hitting his 2nd shot on 18 which went into the grandstands.
I'm a part-time pro sports photographer who has covered several golf tournaments. We actually do carry cameras around our necks at times... you have to make quick decisions sometimes and juggle one camera over your shoulder or around your neck while hanging onto your monopod mounted long lens/camera gear. I once had a camera and lens hanging from my neck and dangling between my legs. An errant drive hit the lens instead of my nether regions. That would have been painful, to say the least. Lens was fine and the ball actually bounced back into the fairway instead of the rough and trees where I was standing.

On one hand I think the rule is stupid. On the other hand, it's probably because I'm thinking about how I would be with a cell phone camera.

Some people are picture crazy. If someone was ripping non-stop photos as a member of the gallery, they need to be controlled. Someone taking a picture of their favorite player one time all day, when they are just standing there waiting on the tee... really don't see it being a big deal.

It's all relative.

No one takes a cell phone picture and sells that to the media. There is no threat to anyone that professionally does that.

Bottomline... this is why I prefer to go to practice rounds. I want to enjoy myself. I don't want to deal with all this drama.

I just got back from heading out to Doral first thing this morning.

The cell phone ban is a joke, but it's impossible to enforce when you're letting every Twitter-**** volunteer, "hostess", and 20-something staffer carry a cell phone and perpetually text.

I was amazed. My son and I walked up to the Cadillac pavilion to the right of #1 (between #1 and #18) and walked right in, past the two girls at the entrance who could not be bothered to stop texting or even look up to say hello. I don't know if they were working for Cadillac or for Trump, but it was pretty amusing.

Ping. Play Your Best.

Someone truly doesn't know the definition of harassment. When Stevie takes your camera away and tosses it in the lake that is harassment, not someone reminding you to stop taking pictures on Thursday thru Sunday if you don't have a press pass (like it states on your ticket if you took the time to read it)...I have never had a problem taking any camera on the course as long as it is Monday thru Wednesday. Part of the reason for the longer lenses is you don't have to stand close to the player to get a picture (where he can hear the camera...surprisingly doesn't bother the LPGA players as much..probably not the prima donnas the PGA guys are). Two of the worst going that don't like their pictures taken are VJ Singh and Davis Love III (almost like you are stealing their soul). Some tournaments will put a limit on the size (length lens) you can have on your camera without a press credential (even Monday thru Wednesday). I was told it has to do with non credentialed pros (or amateurs) selling the photos of the players (who the hell would want them but I guess you can sell anything these days)...

I was not "reminded" the guy was trying to publicly humiliate me for taking a cell phone picture of a vacant hole. I would have laughed at him, but I figured he would have kicked me out. Talk about a nobody guy on a huge power trip. PGA Tour volunteer and you paid them money to berate innocent spectators? LOL I laugh at the state of this country.

He should have kicked your azz out. Try that at The Masters and see what happens.

Are you really comparing a random PGA Tour event with no big names to The Masters? You can't bring phones to the Masters but you can everywhere else.

Downright creepy, isn't it..

Some SLR lenses can be massive even if they're wise angle, as would be needed for this close a shot. That's beside the point however.

What about the OP taking a picture of this person taking a picture, then complaining. Humph.

It's such a pitty you cannot take pictures at the event, it would be so easy to just put the phone on mute before entering the event...
ah, you are referring to the human species right? People put a phone on mute before entering the event ... there will just be too many that think it is a silly rule that doesn't apply to them - just like speed limits, stop signs, turn signals, parking restrictions, etc. - which exist for those "other" people.
