Golf isn't fair

I understand that. What happened to Holmes on 1 today is an abomination. He hits a 360 yard drive. With an iron from 246 hits it to the right middle of the green. It rolls off the green, not fast mind you, AND INTO THE WATER. The person that set up the course should be ashamed of themselves. That's not golf, that's just the donald being a jack@$$.

Certainly is a harsh result but after the butt kicking Holmes gave the course on Thursday, they had to do something to put some bite back in the monster.

Even us lowly ams have been there before. Sure did enjoy the round he threw up there the day before. Once in a lifetime stuff. Both him & Ryan Moore. Impressive.

The course sucks and Donald Trump sucks. They can't leave this venue soon enough. Hopefully there is enough uproar and the tourney moves somewhere better.

What a stupid dumb way to set up the coverage on day 2. The leader, Holmes, hits an absolute missile down the dead center of the fairway, hits and even better shot, and is trying to make par on a par 5, just because the green was designed by an absolute moron?

This is a stupid golf course. I guarantee if you asked all 50 of the guys out there, 45 would say the course is a joke. On to the next one.

Its what happens if your game is as one dimensional, a hard fade from 240 to a green sloping left to right that is semi firm will have significant run on it.

It happens to be designed for a wedge approach shot and is currently the 3rd easiest hole on the golf course so I see nothing unfair about it, just bad course management

Yep. It's all about perspective. I find it ridiculous to think that a designer should be thinking about how the green will accept a 246 yard approach after a 360 yard drive when designing a hole. Good on Holmes for hitting two great shots, but 99.9999% of guys couldn't dream of hitting that green in two, no surprise to me the designer didn't take that scenario into consideration when designing the hole.

Before the redesign this was a pretty boring golf course. 18 was/is a very hard hole, but the rest of the course has been made significantly more difficult.

Honestly it's bad course management. I know you want to stiff a 250 yard shot into a green, but it was architected for a high approach. If he played it differently it's an easy birdie. It's made to tempt players to go for it, and punish them for greed.

Our course is like that on a number of holes: you can put the ball in the fairway and end up in the hazard very easily. Any other course it would be a great drive, our course...too bad.

I played Doral years ago and before the redesign.....I thought it was unfair back then. The 30 MPh wind might have had something to do with it.

Holmes shot into 1 wasn't hit with a 3 wood but a 6 iron. It wasn't hit low but a normal, high trajectory cut. It didn't hit near the pin but on the front 1/3 of the green. The average spin on a 6i per Titleist is around 5,000 rpm. I'm a few credits short of my golf architecture degree but to think that a green shouldn't be receptive to a high 6 iron with 5,000 rpm's of spin is beyond crazy. The same to those who set up the course. Bad bounces are a part of the game. Bad design or course setup isn't.

Not many guys can make that shot...can't please everyone with a green design.

That said I really wish they would stop pumping air into the vacuum that is Trump's ego.

Exactly. This is absurd. So the only way the hole can be played without being subjected to that ridiculous left to right funhouse putt putt slope is by hitting your approach with a sand wedge?

It's one thing if a player is coming in with a 6i and he hits it hard and through the putting surface. Holmes' ball almost completely stopped, then kept rolling and rolling to a bank that was shaved (though we were told they were left to hold balls this year), gathered more speed and splashdown.

If this is Donald Trump's attempt to dominate the second hand premium golf ball market, it's really making for some awful viewing. Though I am enjoying the tournament, generally speaking.

It was not fun to watch that shot. It was not rewarding for him to play that shot.

And... It was a great shot. You should be able to reach any par 5 in two with a monster tee shot and a perfect second shot into the MIDDLE of the green. It rolls off the green, or into a bunker, fine... But into the water? No.

If you say "Well, it was a bad shot because you aren't supposed to be able to reach that green in two. You must lay up." - Then I say that hole design is boring and terrible.

I don't even know how hard of a cut he hit into there. The announcer walking the course said Holmes' pitch mark was between the middle of the green and the left edge of the green. The ball then bounced straight back into the middle of the green before it started drifting right. Nothing about that shot was bad course management and it certainly shouldn't have ended up in the water. It was a great golf shot that got penalized by a bad green design. You don't have every announcer/commentator talking about how unair that was to Holmes w/out there being something unfair about it. My guess is that green will be redone sometime this summer to make sure something like that doesn't happen again.

What a dumb statement related to this shot. Punishing for greed is putting a pin four paces from the water. It looks like Holmes played the shot just like he wanted, where he should have played the shot, and ended up in the water. It's not wven a rub of the green, it's just stupid.
