How pissed do you get when...

Recommended Posts

you book a tee time online, drive to the course, hit a prefect dive on #1, hit a nice approach shot at the stick only to see a nice plume of sand after the ball lands 10 feet from the hole.

Booked my round today via GolfNow and there was no Aerification Alert symbol. Upon reaching the course the practice greens were not punched and in really good shape. No mention of anything from the pro shop.

After the round I mentioned how displeased I was driving 30 miles to putt on sand all day and mentioned they should be courteous and use the symbols on GN or at least give better discounts for when the course is being maintained.

Got a.' sorry you were not pleased with your round" , but to me it's bush league because after you drive to the course, warm up and get on the first hole what are you going to do????

BTW - Course is Sierra Lakes in Fontana CA.

I've had it happen, walked off the course, and called my cc company from the car. That practice is deceitful and I have no patience for it.

I'm not a huge fan of deceiving the customer. And in this case not telling you is a form of deception.

The thing that many course GMs don't get is customers who feel deceived may never return. Is that really worth a few extra dollars?

In your case they probably figured you got a good deal on the rate through GN so they didn't bother to tell you.

You have every right to be ticked off. Their practice was deceptive. However, they will pay a high price for it: not only will you not return but you will generate bad word of mouth about their course. If they treat other customers the way they treated you, their business will surely suffer. I was in retail 31 years. One thrives on good customer service and repeat business and dies a painful death by the lack of it.

Most of the time GN has an alert if there is some sort of work going on. Only once did I arrive for what was supposed to be a pleasant and regular round only to find that the course had recently been plugged - fairways and greens. I called GN and cancelled the tee time - they refunded my fee and I found another tee time close by.

So I filed a complaint on the golfnow website and golfnow responded saying after verifying course conditions they are giving me a free round of golf. I assume it is equal to or less than what I paid.

Good for golf now to do something even when the course would not. :)

Unfortunately aerification is a necessary part of golf course maintenance, but many act as if the course does so just to piss them off.

I work in a pro shop part-time and every year around the same time we get the same phone call over and over again: "are you guys aerating the greens again?" The callers always come across with an angry, irritated tone.

I'm not sure, but are they expecting me to reply "No we decided not to aerate at all this year. We no longer care about the health of our golf course"?

OP I'm not aiming this at you or anyone in this thread, its more of a mini rant.

But I'll include in this rant a mini rant about golf course GMs. I've worked for GMs in the past who do not want us to mention to callers making tee times that we are aerating. I refuse. As I said in a previous post, when we deceive the customer its is likely they will not return.

We now offer aeration specials. Its been very well received and people don't seem to mind playing on punched greens when they know what to expect ahead of time and the price is right.

Last year played at TPC Deere Run in late April. Made tee time online through the course. Got there and paid and asked why it was less than the amount quoted on the Web page. They told me they aerated that week and charged less. Still the greens were faster than my home course.

I would be mad that I didn't hit my approach closer..joking of course.

However, the course most of been playable, because you finished your round. I don't like aerated greens but it is a necessity,so I'll play with the mindset my best scores are not going to happen.

Playable yes...... enjoyable? Depends on how much you value putting considering putting accounts for at least 30% of your over stokes. If the round was discounted accordingly I would not have complained.... also I would not have booked that course as my thought process for the day was to play with my new Ping Heavy Rustler.

Once you see it is aerated then it should change your attitude and mindset for the round. Work on fundamentals more then trying to score.

There is a course near me that Mike Bender has one of his teaching schools at. A few years ago it was a great little course for cheap, but it is a pasture now. There are weeds everywhere and the greens are a joke. Really wish someone had put up a review before I went there last summer. Luckily the pro shop was upfront telling us that the course was in rough shape due to new ownership just taking over. At least he knocked the price down to $20 for the round including cart. It was his service that has me checking back in periodically just to see if they have gotten it back in better shape.
This...there's nothing worse than showing up for a round at a new course only find a temporary green or two along the way.

I can't imagine the hell that the staff at Chambers Bay is dealing with right now. At least the person booking online should see the big red notice they have...but that doesn't mean he reads it or shares it with his buddies.

Since being awarded the 2010 U.S. Amateur and 2015 U.S. Open we have been making regular improvements to the golf course, designed to provide setup variability for major championship golf. These course improvements have also required the patience of our customers as they result in temporary disruptions to the golf experience.

Effective March 1, we will reopen the original putting greens on holes #1, 7, 10, and 13, but will return to the alternate putting green on hole #4. So, through March, players will encounter alternate greens on holes #4 and 12, and a temporary condition on #15 where players' balls will be retrieved by a member of our staff once play has reached the putting surface. Additionally, we will be topdressing greens on a regular basis and fairway collection areas may be covered and notes as Ground Under Repair.

With the number of courses within a 30 miles radius if I search I can find a course that has either not been done yet or are already healed. Played a course today that isn't schedule to punch until April. Many courses here have 2 tracks and do them a month apart.

Again I am not opposed to playing punched greens, just need to know what I am in for and\ should be prced accordingly.

If we're playing our local club where we have season passes, we always play automatic two putt
when they aerate. You take a run at your first putt. I may get slammed for not playing "by the rules".
LOL. I know the course needs to make repairs and do maintenance but it irritates me when I'm
paying full greens fees and the course is less than full greens fees playing condition.

Seem to see this more and more up North. Winter kill. Had a 156 yard downhill par 3 play at 98 yards to a 20 foot diameter temporary green! I guess that was that flat part of the slope. Green was 3 inches of rough! Not happy to pay full price to play that.

I completely understand your frustration. I cant believe the course wouldnt say anything while you were paying? I mean come on now. Now dont take this the wrong way, because i completely agree the course was wrong in not informing you about the greens being punched but i do have a question.

if it really bothered you so much, why even finish the round?

If I got up to the first green and saw it was punched and there was no warning at all from the golf course I would have turned around walked back in an politely asked for a refund. I think where you went a little wrong with the course is that you finished the round.

Despite the pain in the butt it was driving out there, its hard to argue to the course that they wronged you in such a way that you should get a refund or a free round from the course if you did actually complete the round. My guess is they probably didnt show you much love because completing the round shows it wasn't a big enough deal for you not to play and my guess is that's probably what a course that doesn't report punching greens is banking on. Its kinda like ordering a chicken sandwich, them serving you a cheeseburger eating the whole thing then complaining that they did not bring you what you ordered after the fact. All I am saying is i think you would have gotten more of a rise out of the course if you had not finished.

I am not sure why courses don't think aerating greens is a big enough deal to make sure they alert everyone. Maybe they are afraid of lost sales. but your going to lose customers when you are not honest about course conditions which is a bad move on their part.

I think it was a good move by golfnow to hook you up definitely shows they care a little more about their customers
