Tim Mosel Fitting experience.

 

I would like to thank the GolfWrx community for providing knowledge about club fitting. Also thanks to Tom Wishon for offering his time to put out weekly articles about the fitting process. After reading a good number of fitting articles i wanted a legit custom golf fitting session.

 

Little background on my game. Currently 32 years old. Started playing golf in 1997 for the Hoboken High Golf team. I was the only lefty on the team and had to search for used clubs in a storage bin at school. i had to use persimmon woods and wilson irons. My game has improved a lot over the last two years. In 2013 i shot 81. Last year my game struggle due to not putting enough time to practice. 2015 i set new goals with golf fitness got some lessons with my pga pro in hopes of breaking 80.

 

I schedule a fitting session with Tim Mosel in Denville NJ for March 17th

Tim has the traditional mom and pop store.

His store wall is full of history about his dad golf career

It seem like every 25 minutes customers would stop into his store.

 

Fitting process

 

First Tim told me to come to his hitting bay.

He told me he wanted to give his unbiased opinion so he did not see my irons during this process.

 

Started with Tim’s clubs three different types of 5 irons graphite steel and graphite.

I hit about ten balls with each club

My objective was to keep a consistent swing during the fitting which i did.

 

This process took about 25 minutes.

 

Next i was told to bring my driver.

Adams Super Speedline LS 10.5 degree driver lofted to 12.0

 

Tim inspected my driver length loft etc.

After tending to a few customers tim said go ahead and hit your driver.

It took my about 8 swings to get my rhythm with the driver.

To note i have no data to view i am just taking my normal golf swing

 

Process 20 minutes.

 

Education

Tim took down a lot of notes and basically told me everything i wanted to here.

 

My swing speed for a 5 iron is 80 mph with a ball speed of 115

Length for a 5 iron should be 38.5 for my height

Tim mention my length would be ideal for titleist irons specs since every manufacturer has different guidelines

 

Driver swing speed 100 ball speed 144.

Even though my driver says 10.5 its probably a 8 to 8.5 degree lofted driver.

So even with the loft up wrench its probably a 10 degree instead of 12 degree.

My launch angle was 10 degrees and tim would like to see 12.5 to 14 degree launch.

 

Set make as per my specs

 

Driver 13 degree loft in a 44-45 inch shaft

Woods

18 degree loft in a 43 inch shaft

22 degree loft in a 42 inch shaft

25 degree loft in a 41.5 inch shaft

Hybrids

3 in 21 degree loft in a 39.5 inch shaft

4 in 24 degree loft in 39 inch shaft

5 in 27 degree loft in 38.5 inch shaft

 

Irons

As per my specs i can start my irons from 4-wedges

I prefer to use a hybrid to replace my 4 iron

 

Inspecting my current clubs.

Tim started to pick a club out of my bag and test the following clubs for length and shaft flex

3 wood Callaway Razr X stiff shaft

5 wood Nike VRS stiff shaft

3 Hybrid Nike Covert 2.0 stiff shaft 20 degree

4 hybrid Black Shark 23 degree

5 Iron Callaway Razr X uniflex shaft

Lob Wedge titleist 60 degree

 

After his inspections i will remove 3 wood and 3 Hybrid out of my bag.

3 wood at 15 degree loft does not provide me with the proper launch angle and the shaft is too soft.

3 hybrid is hard to hit to begin with and tim said i have an iron shaft in my 3 hybrid..

Now on to my 5 iron

My 5 iron is 1 inch too short for my specs.

After testing the shaft flex tim said he could extend my irons by an inch to give me the correct length for my swing.

 

Conclusion, clubs that Tim could build/alter

Driver loft of 13 degree cost $300

New #4 hybrid $114

Shaft extension plus new grip cost $24 per club

 

In my opinion this experience was everything i hope it would be and then some.

Tim was very professional and his knowledge about club fitting was amazing.

I will probably have my irons extended one inch 5-SW next month

I dont want to get rid of my driver so i will deal with the lower launch angle on my tee shots.

4 hybrid will purchase will be during the summer.

Great to hear. I also asked Tom to recommend someone and this is who he gave me. Next month I hope to have fitting scheduled.

I have not seen Tim in several years but he always was one of the best. Glad to hear is still is at it.

Does he have all the name brand drivers or just Wishon and Miura? That's all I'm seeing on his site at least.
