US Open to allow smart phone in!

I have to say i kind of like tournaments not allowing cell phones. It's refreshing to go 6-10 hours without looking at your phone. I hate when I go to a ball game or even a golf tournament and so many people just have their eyes glued to that tiny screen the whole time and are so disengaged. Just enjoy the game/tourney! Talk to somebody! Be social!

I just got back from a practice round at the Masters. They allow cameras on practice round days but no phones. I was a little disappoiinted because my phone takes way better pictures than my camera does. I was really wanting to do some panorama shots and stuff. Anyway, when we were inside the gates you know what I saw...people talking to each other. Having a good time. Enjoying the course. There are times you can "miss" something because you were taking a picture. I left my phone in my car and didn't really miss it. It was great.

agreed. i went to a steeler game this past year, it was one of the quietest games i've ever attended. they even resorted to piping in a fake crowd 'defense' chant. sad.

If 100% of the people put the 'sound' on their phones on mute, there wouldn't be any problems. But that would be asking humans to be perfect, sigh. I personally like having my phone with me, in my pocket only, not out of my pocket unless there is an urgent situation, and only use it in an appropriate place. People trying to get the perfect picture often times subtracts from the experience. Funny sidebite, a friend was telling me his kids text across the livingroom, instead of just speaking to each other.

Screw them. I went to the open at Olympic and had to check in my phone. I was dropped off at the tourney so I entered at the drop off entrance. Unfortunately for me, when I left I needed to take a shuttle bus. Too bad I could not get the shuttle from the same entrance. So I had to freaking walk like 5 miles around the whole course outside to the buses after picking up my cell phone.

F$&@!! Rule change a few years too late.

Can you bring in selfie sticks?

selfie-stick-539498.jpg

Dear god no please no, they banned selfie sticks at the Kentucky Derby and therefore it is now number two on my bucket list for sporting events.

Edit: Also apparently selfie sticks are a very sensitive subject, I may have gotten in a slight altercation at the bar last weekend about them...

That would be great. But unfortunately for some of us a " device" is a work requirement. Not of a boss as I am my boss. But as a mode of connection. The customer base expects constant contact. I'm ok shutting that off. And I do on the weekend. But here's the rub. When I switch back on I pay dearly with endless stream of texts and emails to respond to. For me at least, it's less painful to just stay on. Vs switching off. Worrying about being off. Then going through hell once back on. I say this every holiday or vacation o take. It's good. Never long enough. Then when I'm back on I hate living. Nice life we have made for ourselves isn't it? It's either this, minimum wage or hit the lotto.

Edit. That being said if I went I would turn it off. Just stating why some feel the need. Others who feel the need just want to let Facebook know about it. That's not me.

i get some people love to use their phone for whatever reasons...text, find friends, camera, check scores, etc. Others could care less. neither crowd should set the rules for the other.

I'm all for phones to be allowed, with a strict, no questions asked, no warning, escort off premises if your phone rings or camera shutter sound goes off. allow camera, set the rules, and most important enforce them. as long as their are warnings, fans won't get it.

post plenty of signs on the way in, have a tech support booth available to those that don't know how to silence phone, and let those who do know how to properly use a phone use them.

well if you are the usga, and create a us open app, you can't reasonably ban smart phones during your tournament, can you?

Something tells me that this is going to be a lot bigger than it should be. It was bound to happen anyway.

Yeah, I'm like that too. But I put mine on mute and refuse to interact when I'm doing something in my down time.
Golf, fishing, watching sports, out with family or friends.

If I want to catch up or try to keep up on my down time, I'll text/email from the shitter or when I'm already alone/doing nothing.

I won't take away from quality time for work. I work enough.

[/quote]Personally, I am surprised the US Open is allowing this to happen, and actually wonder if it will work out. It seems you'll always have some'one' screwing it up for the multitude who abide by the rules. It's hard for me to fathom 100% by the rules when it comes to the many sheeple mixed in with the respectful golf fans. With this in mind, I like having my phone with me just in case of emergencies, but that's generally how I use it all the time. I have a facebook account, but never use it, and litterally never "tweeted" in my entire life, and don't plan to. The phone for me is more of a tool then a socializing device. I really bugs me to see people driving with one hand and texting with another, yet the police rarely pulling anybody over? If I were to carry my phone in the US Open it would be muted, on "airplane'' mode, and the data turned off. If anyone called my phone, nobody would ever know until I checked the phone myself, in an appropriate place.

I'd estimate that for every 100 people that bring in cell phones, 40% would forget to put them on mute or intentionally do so.
