best value fairway wood/hybrid shaft (heavier range)

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Looking for a good cheap shaft thats heavier than standard OEM offerings.

Currently i play ~50g's in my woods and 74g in my hybrid.

I was thinking of playing 80 gram shafts in my woods and 90-100 in my hybrid.

Oldies but goodies should be posted here, just want something to experiment with that will hopefully smooth out my swing, just lose myself with these ~50g wood shafts and ~70g hybrid shafts.

SS just under 100, about medium aggressive transition.

Thanks in advance.

Many of the classic Aldila's - NV, VS-proto, DVS, NVS - (depending on the desired profile - listed low to high) and UST PF v2 - for a good low launching option. Original Diamana white boards and blue boards are also a good option although generally a bit more cost.

50 to 80 is a pretty big jump. Might want to play around with some lead tape first to better pin down the best weight for each club (generally not the same for driver and fairways). You can wrap it around the shaft below the grip, spiral fashion - centered about 14" from the butt end of the club - to simulate what a heavier shaft will feel like. At the range, while hitting balls, add it in 10 gm increments for a quick check.

yeah it's a large jump but i play a 70g shaft i believe in my driver with lots of lead tape and have had pretty good luck. Definitely a good idea to try before i just jump in there.

Are there any OEM's that use 70/80g shafts standard so i can get a feel for the weight?

edit: 63 gram driver shaft i apologize. Maybe i should look into 70's range for the woods and 80 for the hybrid.

10 gram splits seem to be pretty popular.

Yes, that's a fairly common progression but that doesn't mean it will be best for you. Keep in mind that if you change shaft weight, you may have to play round to find a new good SW value (since you mentioned lead tape on the heads) with the heavier shafts.

Pretty decent amount of stock 70 gm fairways and 80 gm hybrid shafts, although not as many with stock 80 gm fairway or 100 gm hybrid shafts.

What are you playing for weight in your irons shafts? If they are heavy enough, 90 or 100 gm for hybrid might not be that far off - although it can depend on the length you play them at (and same goes for the fairways).

Iron shafts are 105g, i am hoping to get the Hybrid feeling closer to my irons.

Might take a look at the vs-proto, heard good things about it and looks like they could be had pretty cheaply.

The folks that tend to like the heavier 100 gm hybrid shafts tend to play heavier iron shafts (120-130gm). But that's just a generalization. I'd try 80-90 first before jumping up heavier but you never will know what's best for you until you try it.

I've always liked the vs-proto's so I'm a bit biased.

UST tour green's, you can also find some good deals on old TM graphics shafts like RBZ, R9 etc that are excellent shafts at a low down price simply due to the graphics if you can deal with them...

Nice choice on the Serrano. Low-mid profile and usually looked over because they came out just before the RIP series.

You could find an NV 85 for your hybrid for a song. Great feeling shaft and you won't be missing out on anything newer by playing it. The VS 95 hybrid is a nice choice if you can find them, they are a little scarce these days.

Put a light steel shaft in your hybrid. Blends nicely into the irons, you can afford to cut it to iron length and maintain a heavier weight/feel. You may be like me and never think about a graphite hybrid again.
[/quote]

Maybe I could just reshaft my hybrid with my 4 iron shaft and extend it 1/2" more. It would play at 40 inches and would be a 105g steel shaft. Kind of like that idea.

edit: i should add, my iron shafts are .370 so it could work.

Plenty of good light steel options for hybrid, KBS hybrid, 90Tour, Nippon 950 (they make a hybrid/utility specific in that line); Apollo Acculite 95; VS Proto in the heavier weights is rock solid, NV 105 hybrid or NVS 105 hybrid if you can find them; UST Tour Black (there is a 100g version); others have already mentioned some Alidla options for fwy woods, all good options; Other shafts that have worked well for me are Sk Fiber Tour Trac 80 and 90; Matrix Studio 84 and 94 (harder to come by); another to condsider would be the Nippon steel fwy. shaft option (forget the model name, might be the 950 too). Fwy/wood shafts w/ these specs, at least reasonably priced and in a flex less than stiff, are hard to come by these days.

Won an auction for a taylormade TP project X hybrid 90g shaft for $20 shipped, excited to put it in my OG RBZ hybrid. The shaft is "new" but was the same one used in the rescue 11 TP as an upgrade.

edit: will this need to be tipped to play into my 4 hybrid? Total length is 42" so i know i will have to but trim but i wasn't sure if hybrid shafts like the one I got came ready to install or if there was additional tip prep needed?
