Cat has kidney failure; words of encouragement needed

Recommended Posts

So sorry to hear of your loss. Dealing with the loss of a pet is one of the hardest things for a person there is. We just had to put two of our cats to sleep about a month ago. One from kidney failure and one from cancer. I'm still bummed.

So sorry to hear about your losses. I kind of have disconnected a bit (for my girlfriends sake, being the strong one) but truth be told I think about her every day. Sometimes cry a bit on the way to work when a song comes on that reminds me of her, you know, manly stuff.

Honestly it's got to be one of the worst goddamn things that can ever happen to a person. I am a HUGE dog lover and honestly I don't know if I want to have a dog of my own when I grow up, get married, and move out. Been through the heartbreak a couple of times now and it's just awful. I know this sounds messed up, but I barely cry when a family member or someone I know passes but when one of my pets passes I cry like a m************ baby.

Sorry for your loss. It IS a heavy topic. I've always had dogs, and, of course, they become your best goofy buddy. They love their 'pack' and kind of adopt us ... and make us feel welcome in their world, too. If you have cats or dogs, it becomes a lifelong passion and the story will repeat itself. Yes, it's tough to lose a family member, but give more thought to the relationship you enjoyed and what you were able to provide to enhance the life of your friend.

I have to reply to this. I've lost several best friends (dogs) over the years. It is literally gut wrenching. I know. Then, 12 years ago, my step-daughter was killed in an interstate crash. She was a year out of the Air Force Academy and had a very promising future. When you experience something like that, suddenly nothing else carries much importance. I don't know if there is truly a healing process, I choose to think of who she was, the way she made people feel, and the passion she brought to everything. Our family established a scholarship at her high school in Franklin, TN. Her legacy still helps others.

Don't mean to ramble here, but death is part of life. Deal with it in terms of the value and enrichment that was part of your life. A disclaimer here - I'm just a sales guy and this is simply my take and the way I cope with this stuff.

Heart felt posts guys, really appreciate hearing the words of encouragement, was half expecting to get flamed for being a panzy.

Anyone who would flame someone for grieving over a family pet is a true coward.

Absolutely agree . Believe me wen i tell u I am as tough as the come mentally and physically . Was brought up by a old Italian father who taught me to be a mans man .

But I love my dog more than I can explain . He is family and i. Dread the last day together . If any1 flames u for loving your pet they probably have never had 1 cause it's impossible not to love them like family .

So... I log on to WRX to read cool golf stuff and I knew I shouldn't have but I clicked on your post. First of all - condolences. Time heals, but you never forget. Next, of course it brought up a couple memories of pets I had to put down and thinking of them all these years later now causes me to smile at the good times rather than the end.

I got the famous mutt Frisky when I was 5 as a birthday present. My constant buddy all through school, during several moves when he was literally my only friend at first, and finally when he was an elder statesman guarding my house. I had to take him to the vet to be put down when I was 21 - he was the only dog of my childhood. I was a wreck driving home and am very glad no one I knew saw me.

Animals life expectancy is their biggest drawback when considering to get one. I always ask myself if I want to go through it again and the answer thus far has always been yes. Current stock includes 1 Golden Retriever, two wiener dogs (my wife's) three horses and 4 chickens. (I must confess putting the chickens down won't bother me too much.)

To update my reply on page one, had the discussion with the girlfriend tonight and it looks like we will be putting our dog down this week. His illnesses just too much for him to overcome and we want him to go out while he is still somewhat happy and not suffering too badly

Sorry to everyone who has had to put down a pet. I know many look at them as nothing more than animals, but I know that pets, no matter what they are, can become as close to their family as anyone. My wife and I have two dogs and two cats, all of which we have rescued, and I am already dreading the day something happens to any one of them. They are our kids and we love them as such. Anyone who ever says "it's just an animal" is truly at a loss for just how rewarding and fulfilling having a pet become part of your family can be, both for you and your pet. I'll be giving all four an extra bit of loving tonight after reading this thread.

I'm so sorry... to anyone who has to go through this. Saying goodbye to a loved one (pet or person) is the hardest thing to do but it's even harder when you have to make the decision to say goodbye. Sending prayers and strength to anyone going through this.

Time certainly heals, but truth be told I still miss Lola every day. It helps when you have another animal to know when you're sad and when you need some love.

We have been blessed with a rescue (we found her on the highway) and her name is Dorothy. Picture attached.

Edit: We had to shave her since she was covered in ticks and whatnot; she's actually quite curly and got a lot of hair now, but this has always been a favorite of mine. She has yet to leave my side whenever I am home, that is of course, until Mom arrives, then i'm just about as good as chopped liver.

Knowing and actually letting go of your dog or cat is probably the hardest thing I've had to go through as a pet owner. You really have to consider quality of life and your pet's happiness over your unwillingness to let go. I still miss my Charlie (french bull dog) to this day but I'm glad he didn't have to suffer anymore.

Sorry for your loss. It does get better eventually =)
