I used to have lessons with one of his guys many years ago. Became very accurate but lost a ton of distance which just wasn't viable. I'm talking 25 30 yards with irons.

No disrespect, but you had to be doing something wrong. No swing theory could last this long if people lost 20-30 yards per iron. Unless you were already hitting your irons unnatural distances, like a 200 yard 7 iron,I'd say it had to be user error.

Did u buy his dvd, he was working with a us open player cowles i beleive yts back

I tried it years ago and joined his site for a year, but not much success at that time. I find GE himself to be not very clear on the subject. Or maybe just too scientific or something. He's hard to listen to although I did see one of his videos just recently which helped it click for me. Just one line where I realized what I was doing wrong.
Bill Knodle is a RSS guy and he has an easy to understand explanation of the swing online. http://www.rightsidedswingflorida.com/Right_Sided_Swing_Florida/Right-Sided_Swing_Concepts.cfm

I may well have been but was working with the instructor who said it was all looking good, just not going anywhere, I know a couple of pros who had similar issues of big distance loss.

from a technical standpoint it all made a lot of sense, just wasn't for me.

well, seeing how you're a 1 hdcp, you obviously made the right choice. What did the instructor say about the lack of distance? No suggestions?

He didn't really seem to have a proper answer only I'd get more speed as I got used to it. Which never happened.

Yeah definitely made the right choice.

So I actually got out to play 9 today, and must say the GE RSS served me well. I hit all 7 fairways and with good distance for me. I did get under a couple that cost me a few yards but still center cut. I really only hit one drive that wasn't dead center.
GIR was another thing altogether, though in a good way. I hit three shots onto and over the green simply because I hit them too well. 3W, 5W and 9I, cost me some shots there for sure.
I hit one squirrelly shot all day,my second shot on the first hole. I just couldn't get focused on what I was trying to do and hit a 4H quite a bit right.
All in all I left the course in a great mood as the RSS swing seems like a good fit for me.

I bought the package, and it just came down to being an online student and not fully understanding the right positions. It is an extremely technical teaching to me. Watching every video, including the student lesson ones, and it got to the point that I never knew if I was in the right positions. The students in person weren't in the right positions, ever, so how could I ever get in that position from an online perspective?

Overall, this method depends on your interpretation as an online student or if you can physically go see Edwin and his crew. Or, rather, if you can accept that you won't be in the positions Gary wants you in - but the results of what you see matter more.

At the end of the day, it's all about what works for you. Gary's set up and website are pretty good, a bit outdated compared to what is out there, but doesn't mean the information isn't useful and game changing. I think there are YouTube videos of teachers who have the same interpretation and simplify their approach a bit better than what is on the site itself. It's not to say it's right or wrong, but more so what allows the point to get across from the video to the individual watching. In retrospect, I could have definitely been more committed, but that can apply to virtually anything in golf of course.

Side note, when I canceled my membership, advising that I went with my local pro (who is a friend from high school) instead, I didn't really appreciate how they responded to my request. They bid me farewell by saying "I hope your friend has as many tour wins as Gary!". They also would not give me a refund of the membership until I returned their impact bag that came with my membership. I would have to fax in my credit card details since they do not store that info after 2 weeks of purchase. A bit strange if you ask me.

Yea, I was a member of the site, but it was years ago. I think I only had a 30 day or something, just let it run out. I found the site,(back then) disjointed . There were no videos that just went from "start here" to finish, they were just all mixed in. I would like to go see Bill Knodle who is in I believe Texas or Oklahoma at a golf/casino facility, so maybe can make it a vacation destination. He's the only RSS instructor I know of in the US.

Looks interesting from theory but it’s a flawed system. You set your body angles the way they will be at impact and then just thump the ball using your arms. Not much dynamics there. I don’t know if Pampling is still using the system, and perhaps he is, but when I saw him on the range at a PGA Tour event he was the least impressive.

Sorry can someone fill me in on what an RSS is? And who Gary Edwin is?

http://www.garyedwin.com

I was intrigued by the "right sided swing" - decided to have a look, since the $150 for a year seemed worth a shot just out of curiosity...

Even just working alone on my setup and right wrist a la RSS I've been surprised how effective it's been.

It's worth pointing out Gary is an Aussie... so as i'm British I don't have any problem understanding him and his slang - it may be a bit harder to follow or perplexing as an American, though :stink: - it also means healthy amounts of sarcasm... particularly when he addresses the 'bit like stack and tilt' accusation, which is amusingly destroyed (as in it really isn't like it at all).

My 'usual' previous swing is a Goat Humping Flip Hooker (GHFH) - so i've been aware my clubface is a bit closed at p3 (?), and while intent to rotate the left arm (upper arm, not roll the forearms/wrists) would help it was very tricky to do.

Getting in to the RSS setup and right arm wrist etc... that first takeaway became so much better it was quite startling, more toe up and very, very easy - something like a 'right forearm takeaway' like Stuart Appleby - and it 'just happens'... it's also like getting in to the Faldo Pump drill position ( the drill with club along toe line not hinged upwards) which i've also had success with in the past.

Trying the swing out at the range was interesting... and on the course too. It's made a huge improvement in my chipping & pitching also - I made one half swing punch out of the left rough in some trees with an 8 iron that was perfect... i've never taken so much pleasure and satisfaction from a half swing :taunt:

I'll add my distances from wedges to 3 wood etc are at least as long, while feeling a lot less of a strain... but here's one 'thing' for me i've worked out after my last range session...

how to 'power' the downswing'... it may appear like it's all arms but for me i need to feel like it's right shoulder driven.

Maybe look at it from two extremes - those who extremely good and active pivots may need to feel like they swing their arms (and their pivot, hips etc look after themselves)

...But as i said i'm a recovering GHFH... and to rescue this swing and make contact my arms it seems can work plenty fast enough... they have had to for a long, long pull-hooky time... whereas my shoulders and hips can get lazy and stagnant. This is also an issue with my skiing, where my hips get way too quiet and lazy... so for me i feel i need to get the right hip back in the backswing and power the downswing with the right shoulder out (& down a bit) - this gives wonderful results.

It also helps with half swing, short game etc - as this right wrist and takeaway feel for me ensures i keep my right side/arm moving just as Monte advises in his short game videos. Last round I hit some lovely little chips... the kind that are usually a ridiculous nightmare for me ( and most flip hookers i expect).

There's an RSS instructor, Paul Tudor, here in Thailand but he's a couple of hours away from Bangkok.. but we'll be off for trip to the beach around Rayong so I'll hopefully get to see him then...

I didn't realize Tudor was based in Thailand. He has a youtube channel where he has a lot of RSS videos, but none of his own that I've seen.

Tudor was in Singapore previously - now in Pattaya at the somewhat bizarrely named Bakugolf ( yup... i've worked in Azerbaijan in the past ;-). )

There's not too much out there on youtube, but Billy Bondaruk has some videos and this

Bondaruk doesn't teach the Gary Edwin swing. He calls it a right sided swing, but it's not THE right sided swing.

RSS is interesting, Luke Ringrose used to be based at my local range in the UK, was a long time ago but i always remember the students having great P3>P4.

It's a repeatable motion that will give consistent results, can't ask for more than that, I guess question is have they ever looked to address parts of the swing motion with research we've seen in GRF etc?

Thoroughly enjoyed that link. Already watched most of his videos.

I posted a few weeks ago how the “flamingo drill” by Tony Luczak really helped me....The problem is trying to figure out how to translate that to a regular swing. I’m hoping the right side swing is the answer and those videos could be very beneficial to me.
