Pull the handle on the downswing

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or is "pulling the handle" which is going to be with the lead/ left arm, and attempting to get the left arm off the chest and get separation conflicting to each other? pulling the lead arm with it still on the chest opens my clubface very often.

Trying to get the feel of Monte's recent vid of (with no clubs) the left hand turning the lead hip and the right arm pushing down and out, This fits with the feels of extensor action (mellow lead hand) and throwing the rear wrist with all you have at the ball--down out and forward, and also gets the left /lead arm off the chest --all combined seems to allow clubface to square up, with pretty decent power.

Am I headed down the wrong fork in the road?

Pulling the handle means different things to different people. I have a book at home in which Sam Snead says he triggers his downswing by pulling straight down with the last three fingers of his left hand. He calls it tolling the bell. On the other hand I have seen other people pull so much that they can never get the club back to square. Depends what you mean by "pulling the handle".

Steve

Resurrecting this post!  My father's coach was a student of Snead's and he advocated the bell tolling method of pulling the club down.  My father taught it to me and I won't swing without it.  Having said that there were other things that Snead taught that accompany this if it is to be used consistently.

1.  Snead spoke of his preference to feel as if he "pushed" or took the club back with his left hand following a forward press (moving in sync with left foot rolling inward, left knee/hip/shoulder turning around the head which he viewed as the "hub" of his barrel swing).

2.  With his left side dominating the back swing, it became a natural transition to pull the club with the last three fingers of his left hand.  Snead said he preferred to focus on this feel as this little motion naturally triggered the bigger movements such as his sitting down motion (the foot planting "Snead Squat" many try to copy.

3.  He then advocated for a pouring on of the right hand through the ball while allowing the club to "chase" after the ball, which naturally lead to a high handed finish.

In response to topic author -- yes I absolutely use it and love it as it requires very little effort and provides a lot of fire power.

In this case pictures are worth two words.  What's the point.

I suppose one of the points is that when bumping a topic that's 10 years old with the feels of a guy who died 23 years ago, we could understand that the golf world has learned a bit more about what good players are actually doing in their golf swings and then we can use that info instead of just saying what a guy who would be about 113 years old felt he did in his swing with vastly different equipment, knowledge, technology, etc.?

I suppose the question as to point still stands, what was the point of posting pictures as it specifically relates to Snead's intention based feel?

Every golf swing you evaluate is an opportunity gained, every swing  you don't is an opportunity lost.     Knudson

That feel was specific to Snead and only Snead and has no relevance to anyone else. It’s also a feel and feels arent real.

And the pictures show that the right hand isn’t really doesn’t need to pour anything on and is in these photos nearly off the club and not doing anything

I realize there is some dispute going on, but I was simply responding to this old thread to see if the author still had similar feelings towards this technique as well as quoting another member's post referring to Mr. Snead.  I assume based on your post, someone posted pictures to disprove my observations of Sam Snead's methods of pulling the club down and through (allowing the trail hand to roll naturally over a firm lead hand)?

If this is the case, one issue with using a frame/picture analysis, especially if it depicts a professional player is that it is just one snapshot of one shot taken.  Professionals have the skill to swing in a multitude of ways to shape the shot they need.

For example, take a picture of say Phil Mickelson hitting a specific shot that shows a quiet trail hand and asserting this as incontrovertible evidence that another player's technique is wrong or cannot work for any other player is silly.  What if we find a picture of Phil Mickelson rolling his trail hand over a firm lead wrist (which is easy to find in a picture of some of his swing sequences)?  Is the previous picture now proven incorrect?

I appreciate your defense of a simple response to a specific question, regardless if it is an old post!  Thank you for being a gentleman!  I will not be engaging on this topic anymore.  Best of luck!

Except your post didn’t ask the OP that. It was a post of your experience and what you believe. No question to the OP at all.

The photo was of several golfers all releasing the right hand from the club on a full swing with woods which they do on swings with those clubs and of those being the swings that have the most speed and force applied
