butchered sightline on ping pal 2

ChristopherMcDonald

Recommended Posts

found a great deal on a ping pal 2 and sprung it. Problem is homeboy who had it before put a sightline on the topline that looks horrible, it's crooked and not even in line with the line on the flange.

Recommendations on what I should do to make it better? I was thinking of widening it a bit and making it straight. The little notches are only maybe a little less than 1/8" deep so I don't think i would lose much by doing this.

Was also toying with the idea of grinding down the entire topline to flat. Is there a way I can do this by hand? Losing a little weight isn't a problem to me as I will be covering the bottom with lead tape like there's no tomorrow.

Will post photos when I arrive home.

All help is appreciated.

The good news is (as long as it's stainless), you can grind, file and sand to your heart's content and it won't rust. But 1/8" is a lot to remove. (Might be the entire top line. Ha!)

Maybe you can doctor the existing notch and put another one or two to flank the actual sweet spot?

Not a bad idea, should have mentioned it is a becu ping pal 2. Should I steer clear of altering it in a big way if that's the case? I know the dust can be dangerous.

Good point, as I'm almost positive the beryllium copper dust used on these putters is carcinogenic. I'd love to see some photos, but you might be SOL.

Sounds like the seller made the better deal. Lol
Obviously, it's not a collector's item. If it bothers you that much, you could take it to a welder's shop and have them solder a drop of bronze into that gap.

You could file the crooked sight line, to make it look like a symmetric trapeze, and then paint it black to take some of the focus off it.

File down just a small section horizontally to make a "T" alignment when used with flange line? Rather than filing down entire top. Wear gloves and a dust mask.

I'm thinking it may even be small enough for me to sand down and remove the shotty paintfill that was used on it, make it appear more like a ding rather than an alignment aid.

Any advice on what I should use to do this? Specifically things i can buy at a local department store is preferred. It's hard to describe what this guy did to the topline, it looks like he did two small cuts with a steak knife or something, very strange, and pretty damn crooked. If i hold the putter EXTREMELY toe down, they sort of line up, which leads me to believe this is what the guy was doing, however when soled correctly it's definitely off, pointing off more heal side than middle.

Is it shallow enough that you could just abrade the top line to hide it? Use a file perpendicular to the topline (or even 0000 steel wool) to rough it up and thus mask the marks? After getting its patina back it shouldn't look too bad.

That's what i was thinking. What grit/type of file would be good for this type of thing? Do you think steel wool would do the trick? I would rather use something that takes off less at a time so I can take my time and see the progress as I go, i fear the file i may go too hard and butcher it further.

I'd start with 0000 steel wool. Personally, I'd go back and forth perpendicularlly to the face (rather than a random swirl approach). If that's not working I'd move to a fine grit sandpaper. Whatever ended up working at the roughest level I'd step back in fineness and finish with 0000 for the final pass. After it patinas it should look fine.

Just to confirm:

Lets say it is at address on a right handed putter, would I be making passes vertically running the length of the topline to make it even, or should i be going right to left intersecting the topline?

I'd go in the smaller dimension direction (same direction as sight lines you're looking to hide)
[/quote]

thanks for the tip, going to give this a shot, still will post a photo before i get down and dirty with it.

edit: what would be the next grit level up of sandpaper from steel wool 0000? Want to prepare myself to have to go a little rougher if i have to.

I'd just buy one of those packs that has multiple grits. Higher the #, the finer the sandpaper. So start with 0000, if that doesn't work go with the finest in the pack, etc. When you settle on a starting grit do the topline thoroughly with that grit, then thoroughly with the next finest, etc. until you finish with 0000. Could even finish with a fine polish cream and dremel if you want.
