Why don't they yell "Fore"?

Rose at Memorial, that shank from the bunker, the second after he made impact, he had to know that it was going to be dangerous. Hit that guy so hard on the head, that the ball went 30 yards in 90 degrees direction. And Rose didn't seem too worried afterwards. OK, apologized, but went away to his ball and calmly made a super pitch from the rough.

Luke had the god taste of seeming shaken after he hit that lady at Merion, but normally it doesn't seem to worry the pro's much, hitting someone.

And especially on the PGA tour, they very seldom shout "Fore". On the European tour it's better, but not good.

Why not yell? Spectators are humans and customers, not lowly worshipper's. Is there some kind of etiquette, that it might disturb other players, taking their shots? Or do they normally hit it so long noone will hear anyway? If I am beside the fairway 250 yards away, I will certainly not see anyone raising an arm in some kind of direction. Bubba is not my favourite player, but I have to give it to him, he shouts. At least sometimes.

I don't think he could even see over the lip of that bunker to see where the gallery was. If you watch the video that guy wasn't even watching when the ball hit him. Yelling "fore" in that split second amount of time probably would not have changed the outcome. As a spectator you should be aware that a golf ball might come your way from multiple directions (depending on your location) at any time. Look how tight the gallery lines up along the tee box area of the fairway. I'm surprised someone hasn't been nailed with a low drive with a ball speed of 156 mph or higher.

They have spotters on the tee who yell and point on the direction the ball is headed. And I disagree that "they" don't. I see guys yelling fore all the time. I think tiger has hired a guy just to yell for him. Otherwise by 13 tee he'd have no voice left.

Because if they yell Fore then the fans in the crowd will scatter. This means a wayward shot has more chance of carrying, bouncing or rolling into a bad lie. If you hit someone the ball slows and stops in a less awkward position. Not shouting Fore is ignorant and arrogant and the tours should fine players and caddies who don't shout. And without being racist American players are the worst.

I said this in response to your similar post in another thread, but doesn't your idea that the ball traveled so far after hitting the man actually work against you? Physicist please chime in.

As I said in other thread: With a force that sent the ball 90 degrees 30 yards? Technically, wouldn't the collision between the ball and the man be the worst if the ball fell straight down after impact? That would mean his body absorbed the full force of the impact. Your idea that it traveled 30 yards after impact would mean it was more of a ricochet and therefore not as serious of a blow. Ouch.

If you're going to think safety the spectators should not even be allowed. Unfortunately that is not going to be the case because the organizers and promoters make too much money from the event and I believe the court ruled that anyone entering the course assumes the risk of injury from an errant golf ball.

I saw the Rose incident live but i was watching in bed on my phone at the time, so not the best way to be taking it all in. My first thought was that he didn't yell 'fore' but I was sure the commentator said that he did yell 'fore'. This was on Sky Sports in the UK so I doubt it will have been the commentary that most of you got. Are you 100% sure he didn't yell?

It really annoys me too, trying to see a steward point his little board to the right 280 yards away is stupid. Luke Donald nearly hit me in the side of the face on the 12th at Wentworth last year, only because I squatted down due to my legs aching did it not. Not a single shout of fore, we weren't overly aware that they were even teeing off yet as its hard to see the teebox.

And you think you're gonna hear someone yell "fore" from nearly 300 yards away and have time to look up and around for a little white ball in the sky? And that's the player's fault?

Being 300 yards away from someone is almost two-tenths of a mile. Its not like you're standing right next to the guy...sometimes, even a yell wont carry that far to be heard.

Part of the deal as spectators in sporting events is that you have to actually watch what's going on, and sometimes balls go where they arent supposed to. Like someone said above, Im astonished just how close people are allowed to stand lining the tee box at some of these events...you're just asking for someone to be nailed by a 140+mph heel or toe shot with the driver that's gonna get someone killed.

What's the first thing people do when some one yells "Fore"? They turn around in the direction of the voice and now you're going to hit them square on. How many actually duck and cover? Not many. At a tour event, you are more likely to cause a greater injury yelling fore because now you have 5000 people turning to look at the ball instead of covering up. Pay attention when you are a spectator. It's not like they are firing shots every 5 seconds. You should be able to focus on the few seconds that the 2 or 3 players coming up your hole (no not that hole) are going to hit.

I'm still waiting for when a tour player is hitting from the rough (Tiger wide right) and these idiots (fans and marshalls) give him about a 5 yard gap to hit a low long iron and some idiot usually sticks his head out of the crowd to get a better look. One day he is going to get it right in the mind and the player will get the blame. He hit it 30 yards right in the first place. What makes them think he can hit it with greater precision the next shot?

Just for the record, I think the law of the land requires "fore" to be called out before the shot is hit so that all are aware that a shot is to be played and they should be aware. That is, if I correctly remember a lawsuit in the US a number of years ago.

Exactly what Rose did in the playoff. He ripped that hybrid low and hot knowing that the gallery would stop it from going too far. They all do it.

When we all play this game and one of our playing partners are about to hit we move to a safe position. We should also know golf shots are not 100% controllable no matter who is holding on to the grip. The smart money says follow the group you want to watch and stand to the side out of harms way. Oh but then I cant see the result like I want to. So instead Im going to sit on the edge of the green or along the fairway where Im sure a ball will be landing somewhere close to where I am.

If that doesnt show how stupid I am I'll bring my small children and put them in harms way as well. I might even put my little guy up on my shoulders so hes really a good target for an incoming shot. Hanging around a green on a par 5 or either side of a fairway in the landing area and you should wear a helmet and sign that says Im stupid around your neck. Then after someone gets hit by a ball they want to blame the guy who hit it when in fact they should almost expect it to happen.

This is where boxing and golf instructions are the same.......protect yourself at all times.

Is that what you do when you hear "fore?" Look up? Sounds like a good way to get hit in the face.

First Hankster, welcome to the board!!

It's great to have Ya :)

Thank You for starting a nice thread!!!

I believe the reason why more don't yell "fore" or give fair warning is though 5 million us have left this great game, there are still many, many, possibly in the millions, more Morons left running around the fairways.

It would be great if they exited the game by just throwing their sticks into the attic, though many are myopically blind to the fact that they are indeed an idiot and the game would be better of without them-

I just think that it's selective evolution :)

However, what I have noticed and when I feel better I plan on writing Ying Yang at Tour headquarters an e-mail about this and that is that most of the Peeps lining the fairways and rough where these stray balls are landing are good, normal well behaving Individhals, like You and many on this board.

The Morons tend to be back on or around the tee, near the Player where the cameras are and where they can scream their moronic phrases and outbursts and basically getting in the clip, at least to the point that they can say,"Ya hear that scream, 'Youda man,' haha, that's me," and this is THE highlight of their lives.

Unless the Pros start launching hosel shots with regularity, these stray balls are takiin out the wrong Peeps.

I've probably given this more thought than it merits, however I'm trapped in this chair for approximately 90 minutes and this is when my creative juices really flow ;)

I hope that you enjoy the board, a lot of great peeps and just ignore me, like John Belushi, I eventually fade away :)

Fairways & Greens My Friend,
Richard

Bubba's first tee sot of the day landed at my feet at the 2012 US Open @ Olympic. I thought nothing of itas I was down the fairway about 300 yards and not paying attention. The guy that was hit by the ball was turned and facing the other way if Im not mistaken. He's an adult and he's old enough to know better. Thats like sitting down the 3rd base line not paying attention.............bad idea.

For anyone who hasn't heard about this, take a quick read, seems relevant to spectator safety:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13024139/woman-injured-boston-red-sox-game-serious-condition

As for the OP, I don't think yelling fore is really going to help. As many have said, it would not only be hard to hear, but likely cause people to react in a way that would not be beneficial, ie turn right into the shot. I also think Tour pros are keenly aware that galleries act as nice backstops and a signed glove they get for free could likely help them finish better and make more money.

LOL...yes, professional golfers use galleries to bounce balls off of.

How does a broken bat that flies into the stands compare to a golf ball going into a gallery?

As a member of a gallery, you are allowed to seat yourself wherever you like, if you choose to sit and watch. If you choose to line a fairway or sit next to a green, you run the risk of being hit with a ball. If people are concerned about safety when watching golf, they should actually FOLLOW the group, which ensures they're out of harm's way in case of an errant shot.

Again, do people even realize how close they are with regards to lining tee boxes anymore? People are within 10 yards on either side of a ball being hit by a driver going upwards of 140 mph. People are in some cases within 20 feet of a green where shots are coming in. And in a lot of cases they're within paces from the actual fairway itself.

There is responsibility that lies with the spectator as well with regards to spectator safety.
