Possible for a shaft to twist in adapter tip ?

Recommended Posts

Was hoping to get some feedback.

Last week I bought a new Graman shaft and added a g30 tip to it.

This was my first epoxy job. I cleaned up the tip removing the paint with some rough sandpaper. Mixed up the epoxy (packet from Golfsmith. - fast set 5min with 24 hr cure type).

Put some epoxy on the tip and some in the adapter. Put it on so that the graphics were facing the ground with my preferred + setting. Put my Iomic grip on with logo up.

Next day took it to the range. No issues.

Two more range sessions and a round last week no issues.

Cleaned my clubs last night. Today I played and first hole big slice which is odd for me. Next hole pull it into the weeds. Odd. I look down and the driver is still in the "+" setting but i notice the Iomic label is now facing to the side and the graphics are now partly showing on the shaft.

If I grip the club how I normally do with the Iomic label up and shaft graphics down the club head is now facing the ground.

The only thing I can fathom is happening is the shaft is twisting inside the hosel or the part where the threads are is somehow spinning.

Luckily I test shafts often so my Tour 65 was still in the bag. Swapped it in on the 3rd hole and No issues with that shaft.

Anyone experience something like this ??

Happy July 4 and a long weekend, friend.
My first thought was that maybe that DIY packet was more prone to heat issues if you were storing them in your vehicle trunk?

Of course as we both know I really have no clue about doing club assembly myself, so hoping someone on here can give an answer and/or Golfsmith can correct it for you ?

The odd thing though is our temps the past couple have weeks have only been in the 60-70's. My car is white so it really doesn't attract a ton of heat in the trunk to my knowledge. ????

I don't have any direct experience with issues such as yours, but have read that an air bubble in the epoxy when the adapter was installed can cause the twisting issue.

It's going to be hot in the trunk at 70 degrees. I just found this link, and though I can't speak to accuracy, it says internal vehicle temp at 70 degrees F outside can be 115 after an hour. Maybe no glass is less in a trunk???

Go ahead and pull the adapter. Install the ferrule on the shaft first. Then use the adapter to set the ferrule depth. Pull the adapter back off and lightly wipe epoxy into the adapter. Roll it onto the shaft tip. Install the adapter and set.

I think what happens is you try to install everything at once and the ferrule cleans most of the epoxy off the shaft tip.

The Ping adapter doesn't have a ferrule.

I'm going to have Golfsmith pull it and start all over anyway.
The shaft needs a little more tipping anyhow

Sorry bout that. My comments were based off my own experience with some Callaway adapters.

I would pull the adapter and use a sanding mandrel to really clean out the adapter. Was it extremely tight or extremely loose when you installed the Graman shaft?

Pulling the adapter is really easy. Golfworks sells a kit of bolts for cheap. Or you can go to the hardware store and match it up for a longer bolt and get some fender washers so your puller has something to go up against.

Had the same thing happen to me today on my g30 ls. Glued up an ahina last night, hit some insane drives on the front 9, get to 12 and kinda toe one. Get to 13 and look down to see golf pride logo at about 10:30 instead of 1200. Glued up an ad mt, and rogue those are still sitting here. My first epoxy failure ever. Luckily it didnt come off, only rotated a few degrees in adapter. Luckily i had another driver with me as there is a shootout going on! Xr pro Speeder VC 6.2 X....Will see what happens with the AD MT tommorrow. Wondering if having the tour set golfworks epoxy curing in a room with the AC set to 60* just needed more time than the 10 hrs it was assembled before being hit. The wedges i did last night were fine today, but i dont swing my 62 at 115! The Rogue and Ad Mt have been sitting for 15 hrs now. We will see.

I forgot that this was a G30. I got an extra OEM tip, with instructions and the rubber cone. I followed the instructions which said to put the epoxy on the shaft only with the cone plugging the end of the shaft. Air was suppose to bubble out between the shaft and adapter, which it did. The bond failed first session. I redid it using more standard techniques, epoxy on both parts and air escaping though the shaft and had no problems.

If the shaft value is more than 100 dollars, don't pull it unless you have the proper shaft graphite extractor. You must remove the epoxy inside the shaft otherwise when you will install again the adapter it will create air bubble

As several have said, maybe an air bubble. You said you gripped it right after installing the tip before it set up. If so, this could be a cause of an air bubble. Also tip weights can cause air bubbles. Did you prep the shaft tip? Did the shaft tip fit snug (twistable so not to tight)?

If redoing, then be sure the shaft is clear. If not then an air bubble could cause it to ride up while setting thus weak adhesion.

Some will add a strip of masking tape along the shaft to the adapter/head to prevent riding up.

So far cxx has the only good answers. In almost every case, the problem is one of the following:
1.) a bad prep job,
2.) a bad mix of the epoxy,
3.) poor application,
4.) all of the above.

Blaming the epoxy or a hot trunk is just a bunch of BS.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to take it over to Golfsmith and have them pull it and re epoxy it. Since I don't have a puller I might as well let the professionals handle it.

Update. Golfsmith pulled and re epoxied the tip back on. With grip on and installed I noticed the club was now 45.25 instead of 45" (original playing length). I removed the grip, shortened the shaft -.25" and put the grip back on and it's now 44.75 and not 45". All I can figure is that after the first installation the grip must have slipped back a little resulting I the longer length. Oh well it's only a quarter inch shorter than I wanted it to be.

Funny that this happened to you, the same thing happened to me last week but when I had the tip re epoxied it ended up being shaft failure. My Rouge sheared apart, seems like a failure of that graphite on graphite design.

A lot of adapters need to be prepped so that the glue can "bite".

Most of the time they are too smooth a surface and you need to rough it a little to ensure the glue is able to bond nicely.

Pull the adaptor and prep it with some 80 grit by hand or using a 2nd cut round file.

I have the same issue with a Callaway XHot adapter and I have suspected this is the reason. I cleaned the inside of the adapter thoroughly but did not "rough it up." Unfortunately, I installed 2 other shafts the same way. They have not slipped yet but I don't trust them after what's happened with the first one.

This is the correct answer, as I found out the hard way myself just recently. I know this is an old thread, but no point in starting a new one.
