I think I might need X100s... but they scare me

i've been fitted
First off, I take more than I give on this site. I read a lot, post little. Not giving is a direct result of not knowing as much as everyone here, so thank you all for the info. Great site, great people.

So, I hate to add to these questions that typically end with "get fit" or "demo a bunch and then you make the decision. Except mine is a bit different, I think.

Driver swing speed is 118. If I swing like an animal, I maaayybee can get up past 120, but that's fast. I know, I know, everyone has tour swingspeed online, but I promise.

I have s300s in my irons. I like the feel of them. My really bad miss with irons is long left.

I think x100s will help this issue, but I'm a bit intimidated, to sum things up. When I demo or borrow a set with x100s it's in the back of my head that I need to hit the ball hard. Feel seems to get lost. But everytime I get on a launch monitor, it seems like the clubmakers are baffled i don't play x100s.

Other thing is... and I'm not sure how many guys feel like this... but I hate to have something in my bag others would deem as "too advanced" for me. I want stuff to better my game, but sometimes I feel a bit presumptious explaining to random playing partners "yea, that is X, one ABOVE stiff". A couple of local pros I play with already rib me about the Xs in my driver and 3. (ys 8)

Player profile: I'm 20, handicap right about scratch (+0.3) play at a nice course everyday and want to start playing in more tourneys.

Thanks in advance.

Email Joe, have him guide you and trust his word. Don't overthink it...you are too good a player to allow outside influences mess with your head. Go to someone knowledgeable and trust it. Alot of fitters have their preconceptions and I'd say 98% of them don't completely understand how to translate a fit into an actual installation.

Go with the x100's. I've got a similar swing speed to yours and for some reason (club ho'ing i think) I tried out s300's briefly in the fall when I was swinging well. Well, they lasted about 3 days in my clubs, I'd stripe a 3i off a tee and watch the ball fly out and then balloon a bit into the air, not what I'm looking for.

Try'em. Don't be scared, I was, but they're for the better.

I have similar feelings about this same topic. I wouldn't say they scare me because I have them right now and have played them for probably the last 5 years off and on. I'm just not sure if they are a little much for me or not...or maybe not necessaryl I play with other guys that hit it as far as I do and they play stiff shafts instead of X... I feel a little wierd about it.

Here is mine as there are many differing opinions and preferrences.

If you're 20 yrs and swing that hard and have been fitted, just go with the fitting and take the x100s and don't look back. That is if you want TTDG shafts.

Sounds like you are serious about scoring and a lot more good comes from stiffening up. This is the advice of the big fancy Hot Stix fitting center in Arizona and I agree.

Perhaps if you are not regularly practicing and just a casual player the softer shafts will give you more "general" enjoyment. This is the most common type of advice you get from a clubfitter. I think it is the "easy" answer.

Also sometimes the shafts that you will really love playing and suit your game may not be ones that demo the best with just a few swings.

Could leave wedge shafts as S300 if you are worried about loosing the softer feel.

Good luck!

If you swing hard then get them. You won't miss left as much. They really aren't that bad either.

This has been a great thread for info.

I too am feeling more confident about switching to the x100's.

My only thought now is if I should try something similar in the rifle line.

I plan to get a new set of MP60's, and have heard that the ball flight with rifles is too high...

I had PX 7.0s, a bit too stiff as the feel isn't like a steel shaft. It launched the ball a little high. Went with 7.0 Tour Flights and they felt great, but ballooned the ball. Came back to DGs and don't know why I ever strayed from them. If you grew up playing DGs, you will find that you will feel the same way after making the switch to a Rifle.

So are you hitting the DG X100's?

What iron are you playing, and what is your ss?
