Southern Soul is a must, I recommend the pulled pork. Ocean Forrest is very private, so you'll need an in over there, and then once you're in the guest fees are 300$+. Seaside is excellent, especially once you get into the marsh holes, can't speak to Frederica. It's an awesome place and if you're staying at one of the inns I recommend playing Bingo one of the nights. You'll need shirt and tie but it's an ridiculously entertaining event.

Apparently a member at my club is a member at Ocean Forest. Not sure. Literally every single person I have asked has mentioned Southern Soul...haha. So I guess its a go.

Across the street and down a bit from Southern Soul is a place called the Redfern Village. There are a bunch of shops, bars and restaurants. DL3 has his paddle and putt in there. Its a paddle board shop that also has a bunch of Circle T Scottys laying around. Next to that is Gnats, a cool little bar. Overall Saint Simons is heaven in my mind.

Thanks a lot. We are actually staying at one of the Lake Cottages which is a part of the resort but apparently just outside of the gates?? Never been but really looking forward to it.

If staying at The Cloister would one be able to get access to Federica for golf? I am heading down the end of August and would love to play it- looks amazing!

I would play Frederica twice. Unbelievable place. Get in Seaside and Frederica. I love Sea island more than anywhere for a two hour drive. Just had a guys weekend there last month and it was fantastic.

Frederica is very private and has absolutely no relation to The Cloister.

Headed down this coming weekend for our fourth trip there. For my wife and I, its the perfect resort. Staying at the Lodge is unbelievable quiet and the golf is fantastic. I actually think I like Retreat better than Plantation now, but you have two courses onsite and a third 1/4 mile down the road along with what might be one of the best practice range/area I've seen.

Bubba Garcias is a great Mexican place in town too - we make it a point of going there every time.

Ugh didn't play well at all. Drove it poorly and that is not good on Seaside.

I got there at 2:30 for a 3 o'clock round. Striped it on the range and was looking forward to a good round.

Get to first tee and they say you can go when ready. I had already gotten the go ahead to walk and carry even though it was like 92 and most resorts aren't super enthused about walkers.

Wind was humming and greens had good speed. Missed 15 footers on 1 and 2 for birdie then it got bad. 3 is long par 3 playing into the wind. I blocked it off the tee and struggled to make 4. Then the 4th...I walked up unsure of my line and basically pull hooked into the crap. Re teed and tried to hug the left side and pulled that too. Now I'm hitting 5 into the wind on a really good hole. I get it out there in the fairway but steered it so it was only 250ish. Then hit 8 iron to a foot for the oddest 7 I have made in a while. Anyway driver contributed to bogeys on 6, 8 and 9 to turn in a pathetic 42.

Back was better and I birdied 11, 13 and 17. Sadly I bogeyed all the even numbered holes for a not so hot 37 and total of 79.

Really good golf. Favorite holes were on the back I would say. 13-16 were all really good holes with 14 probably best on the course. 18 is a really strong closing hole too.

Would play again. Compared to some resort courses with big tickets and even guest fees at some private clubs I suppose the $175 afternoon rate was fair (as much as paying that much is "fair").

Not sure about Frederica on TH. My pro says it's not a problem but given how I played today I may just spend TH at the beach club with wife and kids. We shall see.

Wow- looks great man. Can't wait to play when I will be there late August. If you have the in, I would def play Federica from what I've heard about it. I am trying myself to get out there as well.

Frederica is awesome. If you ever play it go to the wedge practice area where Zach practices. The greens are massive and are always in great shape. Wayne Huizinga owns it and you can see replica trophies of the World Series and Super Bowl in the pro shop. The staff is super nice too.

Sea Island? Search for my other threads where I profess my love. Eating places? See below...

Crabdaddys - great food. Kuch eats there alot. Saw him on multiple occasions.

Crabtrap - good food

Fancy Qs - great sushi

Southern Soul- great food. Long lines though. Eat there at off hours.

Brogens - good burgers, beer

Barbara Jeans - great crabcakes

Mullet Bay - great seafood

Bennies Red Barn - great steak. In the winter the fire place inside the door is a great place to be.

Go to the DLIII Paddle and Putt store too. You are libel to see the man himself there.

I just arrived in Sea Island and I am playing Plantation tomorrow morning. I'm hoping one of the Pro's would be kind of enough to call over to Frederica and try to get me out.

Considering retiring to Sea Island along or Hilton Head. Anyone have thoughts on one versus the other?
[/quote]

I have a place in Hilton Head. Lot's of good golf, restaurants, shopping. More so than Sea Island with more to do as far as nightlife.
Also more tourists though - especially in the summer. HHI used to be kind of a secret little place, but not anymore. If you like it a little more quiet, Sea Island is where you want to be. It's just a little too quiet for my liking - at least as far as living there full time is concerned.
I love going to Sea Island / St. Simons from HHI once in awhile though. Great change of pace.
Nice thing about living in HHI is, you have more of a variety of golf, shops, restaurants, etc to take advantage of everyday, but when you want to get away from the tourists, I can get to Sea Island in no time at all. Play some golf, hit a couple bars, have some dinner, and either stay the weekend or head home.

Certainly can't go wrong with either place to live though. The Low Country area truly is a little piece of paradise.

Will be following this thread as it's likely I'll be visiting SSI for the first time in May. Visited Savannah/HHI/Charleston a few years ago and looking forward to another visit to that part of the country.

Southern Soul already noted, lol.

Cubicle - where are your five rounds at?

Hey bud, they are all at the resort. We'll play Seaside twice and then alternate between Plantation and Retreat. Apparently the Plantation was used for the RSM Classic for the first time recently so it must be a worthy track. I am sure they are all great. It wasn't cheap but we saved a few bucks by staying at the Inn at Sea Island versus the Lodge. We still plan on spending most of our time at the Lodge though, from what I hear about the mens locker room.

Just updated our itinerary to 6 rounds. 2 on Seaside, 3 on Plantation and one on retreat. 36 holes each day. One cool thing is that the SEC championship is at Sea Island the weekend we are there and we are playing Seaside in the afternoon when they are done. Same pins. It's our last round of the trip.
