International team has no identity. They can't even speak to each other. What can Cabrera and kj choi have in common??
They both wear hats.......actually nope KJ wears a visor.

I don't think the players even care who wins, so why should I?

It's a contrived event designed to make money; the Ryder Cup developed organically in a way that the PC never will. There was a real difference between the European and American tours that doesn't exist between the American tour and the internationals.

Frankly, if I was an American player, I'd fake an injury and skip it. if I played for a living, it would bug me to play every year for free. They pressure players with the playing for your country thing, when the event has nothing to do with your country and everything to do with cash.

I think the only issue is that it's unfairly compared to the Ryder Cup, which has a longer and richer history. I wonder if people in 1947 were asking each other who cares about the Ryder Cup when they were trying to restart it after WWII?

All it takes is a couple of competitive showings by the International team, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to the event, but based on the responses in this thread there must be something wrong with me...

One thing I find hilarious is all the Euros who live in America, play the PGA Tour and spent very little time on the European Tour ( except the big events) why not just pick two sides for the Ryder Cup and include the Internationals too. Rory and Spieth vs some other guys for the Cup. Euros would never stand for that. Europeans may hate us now but they weren't singing that song in 1939-1945.
Just saying. God Bless them.

Even when they can speak to each other, it doesn't work sometimes.

Remember when Allenby blamed Ogilvy for losing a match when Allenby was struggling?

We're what? 20 or 25 years into the Presidents Cup?

In another 25 or 50 years there will be more of a legacy and history and hopefully the Internationals will have won a few times to spark some interest.

In the meantime.....it's something to watch.

I don't know what age you are but let's say you were plucked out of the US for the next ten to fifteen years to work in say Japan only to return home every few months. Would you stop being American? I don't think so. Would you tell people that you're Japanese simply because you are based there for most of the year? I somehow doubt it. Such a seriously flawed argument.

The President's Cup has the following problems:

1. Internationals have won once ever in the entire history of the competition. The score has only been within two points twice since it began. None of these things have happened since 2003. Europe and US has been a bit of a mismatch over the past ten years in overall wins but when there are exciting, close finishes then it generates interests for the event. 2010 and 2012 RCs went down to the wire.

2. It's every year that the Ryder Cup isn't on, which means that there's simply too many team competitions for the US. When they have a choice between watching the Ryder Cup or the Presidents Cup, people choose the former.

3. International is way too broad and there doesn't seem to be much camaraderie between players of different languages, cultures etc.

So possible remedies to make it more interesting:

Play it every four years instead of every two years. The Ryder Cup isn't going to go away. Either that or get Europe to play the International team every two years.
Limit the teams to 8 or 10 a side so depth isn't as big of an issue. Internationals usually struggle in that department.
Possibly have a continent qualifying face off between the internationals. Australiasia vs Africa vs Asia vs Americas. Semis and final. Whoever wins gets to play. Again this would be helped by 8 man teams given the problems of depth.

Possible teams:

Africa -

Oosthuizen
Grace
Schwartzel
Coetzee
De Jonge
Els
Goosen
Clark

Americas -

De Laet
Hearn
Grillo
Cabrera
Villegas
Gomez
Zanotti
Ortiz

Australasia -

Day
Scott
Leishman
Senden
Bowditch
Lee
Jones
Smith

Asia -

Matsuyama
Jaidee
An
Lahiri
Aphibarnrat
Iwata
Bae

In a way you can add 2 more teams -

Great Britain and Ireland

Continental Europe
If you have all these teams play in a competition format similar to the old Alfred Dunhill Cup.
