Ping Glide ES For SUPER TIGHT lies???

Recommended Posts

I got a chance to play the Glide ES 60 degree with a recoil 95 shaft. My previous 60 degree was a Cally PM Grind with the same shaft.

First, the differences. The ES has a much softer feel. Vibration dampening is enhanced in both by the recoil shaft. Both can easily be opened up for flops, the Cally is probably a little a better in this regard. The ES is noticably more forgiving on full shots, but there is nothing really wrong with cally on full shots. The ES is , however, way ahead out of the sand. Just stupid easy out of the sand.

The ES is good out of all lies that I encountered today. Absolutely no problem with tight lies. I have had most recent Ping wedges. This is by far their best. Pretty much does it all. There are several really good multi purpose wedges available nowadays, including the PM grind, but this is the best that I have tried.

I picked up the 56 and 60 ES yesterday and have two range and practice sessions with them. These replaced my MD tour grind 56 and eye2 L wedge.

So far I'm impressed. Pretty easy on full swings and half swings. Need some more time to say for sure how the 56 performs on full swings. Seemed like it was landing shorter than my MD and I chunked a few, but I'll give it more swings.

Chipping: You can play it near the toe and pick it clean, play it square or open it up from rough and splash it out of the sand. So easy to pitch and chip with it. I think the 60 will do anything you want around the green. It's basically point and shoot

Has a nice sound to it.

Doesn't look funky. Even traditionalists shouldn't scoff at this like the eye2 or PM GRIND.

Grip is noticeably bigger than my new decades.

That would be a spot on review almost word for word out of my mouth. I came up shorter and had just a tad more digging than I'd like for full shots with the ES. I actually prefer the standard Glide grinds for full shots. They look and feel outstanding though. Perhaps a custom order will be in the works for me as the CFS shaft is entirely to soft as well.

Anyone care to elaborate more on the CFS wedge shaft in these? I was thinking of a custom order, but looking at the specs, the CFS wedge seems like a good weight in comparison to the KBS tour stiffs I currently have in my i20's.

The more I look at these, the more I'm thinking of just picking up a stock 58 to try out. I would probably be sending the wedge into Ping eventually for a lie adjustment (I'm a yellow in my i20's, but like blue in wedges), so I could always have them reshaft at that point.

To me it's comparable to kbs shaft.

I hit these again. Just full shots today. They aren't working that well for me on full shots. I think it's because I press my hands. Hitting many of them fat. I never had that issue with the Mack daddy tour grind. I think I might keep the 60 for around the green and go to something else for full shots.

If you truly press, then they should work even better on full shots.

Folks learn a certain technique that works for them.
"Works for them" is subjective. I know guys who proclaim that they love their lob wedges, but the reality is I have seen those L wedges cost these guys lots of shots. One or two up and downs that don't happen does add up. I know guys who claim to "love" this club or that club, but the reality is their shot results with that club are inconsistent. They think the club (or technique of playing a shot) works for them, but it's not true.
I understand you enjoy playing your wedge shots with an open face, but that doesn't mean you would not get more consistent spin and distance control if you played your wedges with by address the ball with the club face square to the target line. One thing is for certain regarding golf, and that is every player has room for improvement.
You are dead on again. I have a buddy who says the same thing about some 64 degree wedge he uses. He's horrible with it but he loves it. He also says he's good for one 300 yard drive a round, the other 13 are duffs or end up in the trees.

I got my ES yesterday and my first impressions are not good. I worked with it for about an hour and the trailing edge and bounce is just too much for me. Having used Eye 2, Eye 2+ L wedges in the past, and an iWedge exclusively for the last 3 seasons, somehow this one is not working for me. I'll probably return it and continue to use my SS which is basically the perfect all around wedge for me.

I just got the ES 56 and 61 in last week. I played them at a course with firm tight lies and fast greens. I came from a 54 58 at the bottom of the bag. The 54 had a half moon grind, 58 had a wrx combo grind from ping. The clubs gave me fits, but honestly I just need some time with them. The leading edge looks so shrp at address that it made me think I was going to dig and I skulled a few. I had 2 sand shots and they were very good from the sand. I'm not going to give up on them yet although they were up for sale after losing my money. Lesson learned.

I have a 58* tour-w low bounce with the wrx ts grind. Bought it for the hardpan lies on the garbage exec courses i play in arizona. Its a digger for sure, and im a sweeper in general - i still have to be careful with it and typically have the face a smidge open on any normal lie.

The ES 60 degree has been a great wedge. No problems with the leading edge being to sharp or too much bounce with the trailing edge. Great from all lies around the green. I think that everyone will agree on it being fantastic from the sand. If they made a 64 degree, I'd buy it. In a 64, I play the next best option; a Mack Daddy PM Grind.

For high loft wedges a wide sole is best because it offers forgiveness off both hard pan , fluffy-grassy lies, as well as all types of sand bunker conditions.
In contrast, high lofted wedges with narrow soles and, or, low bounce angles offer the player almost no forgiveness, and should be avoided.
Bounce (and wide soles) , when it comes to high loft wedge play, is your friend. For several decades all sand wedges were made with either wide soles or really wide soles, and there is a good reason for that.
If you hit flop shots around the green the WS is a poor choice. Wide sole doesn't allow you to open the face as easily.
There is no need to "open the face". With correct technique, 56* (and a square face angle) is enough loft to play very short distance shots which stop quickly. With 58* or 60* lofts, and a square club face at address, one may play shots with more than enough height trajectory and soft landing for any green side shot from the grass, hard pan, or bunker lie.
"opening the face" of a wedge is the starting point for all sorts of mishit shots and needlessly challenging distance control. It's much more sensible to address shots with a square club face as this promotes good quality square ball contact, With consistent square ball contact consistent spin and distance control happens.
Biggest bunch of nonsense I've read on these forums in quite a while. Watch tour players hitting short game shots around the greens. Most open the face significantly. The best player I know lays his 60 wide open and uses the bounce on almost all of his short shots. This guy could get it up and down from inside a phone booth...
True. I remember reading that Luke Donald opens the face on all his chips/pitches, even when he is playing for a lot of roll out.

Square has no clue.

Picked one of these up recently, and I'll add some more praise for this grind. The one shot I had always struggled with was the short pitch, especially off of a tight lie. Coming from either low bounce or m-grinds, I'm still amazed that I suddenly have this shot in my bag just by switching to this wedge.

Honestly, there isn't a shot or lie I don't feel like I can handle with this wedge. If you trust this grind to do it's job, it works wonders. This club has made the short game fun for me again. I'm really enjoying practicing now, and almost look forward to missing greens now!

Thanks for the insight and comparison. I am thinking about picking up a new 58 ES or Cally PM Grind but questioned 1) which was better from the bunker and 2) which was better on full shots. Seems like the 58ES might be the way to go...Plus it will match the rest of my irons and wedges:)

Personally, i have a PM grind 60 and can't stand the thing. Great for flops around the green, but i think it is a wedge that lends itself to firm conditions. Just not a fan.

Buy the SS sole in 50* and either the SS or the WS in the 56*
Tight lie shots must be played (at address) with a square club face. Wedge companies promoting "versatile sole which plays well when the club face is open" is nonsense, especially regarding tight lie shots.

Got my 54 Ss and 60 Es this morning ... Wrx grind on the 54, bent to 53. 60 bent to 59

This aft was the first 18

Dead solid from all types of different grass lies ... Even the 10 yard pitch off a tight wet muddy lie was solid

No word from the sand yet
