Have you seen Whistling Straits? The course is a 5 mile walk, and hardly any of it is even ground. There's no way his leg is going to feel anywhere near good after a round there, which will certainly affect his performance...that is, even if he tries to play.

yes, i have seen it. and i still maintain that this is GOLF. and you guys are talking about WALKING like it's some sort of major athletic accomplishment. if he can stand up and swing a driver he can freaking walk.

If you play football, you dont practice that week, tape up and youre so pumped up, you can play for a day. You wont feel it.

I can see how in golf, over 4 days, the constant standing and walking could be worse.

It's not, I promise. An injury is an injury. In golf a lower body injury is going to be painful but you can either swing or you can't. Walking will grind on you but it's not going to just cause your ankle to break down again.

You can be a 250lbs fat POS and still walk a course without any issue while crushing beers and smoking (after eating 2 hot dogs). Someone like Rory can walk 15 miles a day everyday and not feel a thing. Its WALKING for christ sakes...they dont even carry their own clubs!!!!!! I did not compare golf to football overall. I compared playing with this specific type of injury. It depends on the injury and stage of healing.

You can play football with broken wrist or fingers, but not golf, for example.

In football, Playing through a lower ankle blow up after a few weeks or less of rest is done all the time. You dont practice, stay off it, get heavily taped so you can barely move it, and the adrenaline of football lets you feel no pain for a few hours. It may stay injured all season but its very common to play through, especoally big games.A few hours for one day. Cut practice time.

I could see how with golf requiring practice that week, then having to stand, play and walk for like 4 miles a day for 4 days in a row. It could actually be more difficult.

I saw him coming out of the clubhouse after his practice round today. (I was on my way to volunteer training)

He was walking without any hint of injury. I wish him all the luck in the world. Nothing would make me happier than to see most of the guys in the top 10 fighting it out at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

If he gave his ankle enough time - he's fine...and should be no issue. If it was hockey or football he would have taped up or sacked up and gone. That being said it's not hockey or football - playing it smart was wise as confidence and the distance between your ears is the difference between winning and losing. I wouldn't have played either to keep my illusion going forward.
