Flynn-Golf review and notes

Recommended Posts

I am going to start this with the hopes of providing a bit more information for anyone like me who is looking for clubs for their 10 (soon to be 11) year old. Having used US Kids golf for the last 4-5 years I was ready to buy another set of US Kids TS clubs for my son. But after some searching came across Flynn-Golf and did as much research as I could. Which, if you have been trying to find recent reviews, you will note is quite difficult due to lack of volume of discussion on the web. Anyway, my son started the year and his 54" TS clubs fit him well. However, like most kids he continues to grow and has outgrown the 54" series. With 3 months left (or more hopefully) of our golf season it was time to upgrade.

This past Sunday I emailed Mike Flynn asking about the Velocity line they show on their site. Mike responded that day with an analysis of the differences between the Advantage and Velocity lines, sent me pictures of the heads, sent me pictures of all shaft options, etc. I had emailed Mike all of my son's measurements that morning, including a video of his driver swing. Mike used these to recommend appropriate clubs, we selected shaft colors, head colors (black or white for the woods), and grip colors. I also selected specifically which clubs I wanted and on Tuesday morning the order was placed and paid for. For those interested, green shafts with blue grips in the irons and the reverse in the woods.

As of this date (Thursday am) the clubs are due to arrive tomorrow via UPS. I had asked Mike if it would be possible to get them tomorrow (Friday) and he replied that he would do his best, but most likely it would be Saturday or Monday (at the very latest). When I saw the shipping email from UPS yesterday I was very happy and tomorrow my boy will be so excited that I am not sure how I will be able to contain him.

I will update this post as appropriate with reviews of all of the clubs once my son has time to hit them and play a few rounds. But I wanted to at least let people know that the ordering process really is quite easy. And frankly, considering you deal directly with Mike, it very well may be the best ordering process around. Where else can you communicate directly with the club maker himself? Also, I ordered 10 clubs and the pricing is very close to what US Kids charges for 10 clubs (within a couple dollars). So to summarize, with Mike you get the following: UST shafts, any of the 5 color combo of the shafts you want, grip options (based on your input and measurements), and select exactly what irons, wedges, and woods you want. So far I am more than 100% satisfied. More to follow...

So we've now had a few rounds and some range sessions as well. The driver is carrying 15 yards further on average. He has also gained one full iron in length (I.e. 9 iron is flying as far as he's previous 8). I expected a distance gain simply due to the fact the clubs are longer and thus swing speed would increase. My son loves this new set and loves the fact that he was able to have them custom made.

The wedges are very nice as well. I opted for a 52 and 56 for the time being. Both are solid wedges and spin very well.

Overall, these are exactly what we hoped they would be. They really set up nicely and instill confidence.

His website has still not been updated with the new models that are supposed to be available. It makes me wonder how much he pays attention to this if he doesn't update his site. When I ordered my son's irons in June of 2014, he didn't have the series 2 wedge heads. He said he would have the newer model in a month. To this day, that same old model is in the pictures on his site.

I bought my son (9 years old) the latest set of irons and woods from Mike at Flynn Golf. I had to wait awhile to get the clubs because the arrival date for the new model of clubs kept getting pushed back. Mike gave me a discount for waiting so long and has really taken care of me anytime I needed anything. I like the customer service and the fact that things are custom made especially since my son is left handed. The clubs are a little heavier than some of the other brands and that took some getting used to but my son loves them. I highly reccomend buying clubs from Flynn Golf. I did notice that he hasn't updated his website to include the new models. Not sure why he hasn't done this since the new club models have been out for awhile now. If you email him, he will send you pictures of everything.

Tough age for boys. Getting longer and stronger every week. 11 to 13 depending on growth puts them out of kids and into. ...what exactly? Ladies? Seniors? No real answer but the journey is fun.
On topic- wouldn't it be great if there was a network for good used junior gear? I and many here could outfit a young kid with great gear for cheep. It would be nice if we could move up for cheep too.

What makes it tough is that you really can't try clubs unless you find another junior that seems to have what you think might fit your son/daughter.

I don't think it is that tough until they hit the age that they need real clubs.

Us as parents put too much thought into it which makes it seem tough. There is no real reason to put that much thought into at 7,8,9,10 years old.

The biggest thing is to make sure the equipment fits at the young age. That is why US kids clubs are good.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

You are right, it was easy at those ages. The post I was replying to was mentioned 11-13 year olds (my son is 12). He is at the age/size where junior clubs don't necessarily suit him.

Right, Ian is 12 1/2 and goes to bed every night praying for a growth spurt. He is only 85 lbs but not short and eats more than I do. Kids clubs are too light and the cut down seniors and ladies are covered in lead tape in an attempt at some sort of swing weight recovery. Its a struggle and one that $600 well spent could fix but that just plain is not a reality for us.

So where the hell are all the old middle school clubs from the current high school class?

Golf season will be starting up again soon and I will post some pictures of how the clubs held up last year. Overall, I am happy with them but most importantly my son is as well. I am guessing this will be the last season he will get out of this current set as we built them a touch long for him to be able to use this year. After this season I really am not sure what direction we will go, but I would not hesitate to talk to Mike again and see what possibilities there are.

Part of this belongs here so I'll paste the link and give a first impression:

These clubs are top shelf, I CAN NOT WAIT for this weekend. He is super pumped as am I. The build is second to none, beautiful clubs, great sole without being too chunky, great weight for my boy, literally the best I could do for him at a seriously reasonable price. 5-GW with an extra set of grips shipped for less than $250. Mike Flynn outdoes and outdid himself, crazy good...

I have really defaulted on my promises here. One year later and the clubs held up great. My son has outgrown them so March / April I will be working with Mike again to get a new set of irons. I did end up grabbing a cobra driver my Dad had, cutting it down, and added 25 yards at least to my son's drives. Not really a knock on the driver that Mike provides, more of a function of my son growing 3 inches in 10 months.

Hi All, does anyone know if Flynn offers junior golf clubs for left handed juniors, size 48”? Appears everything on their site is for right handed players.

Thanks.

You'll probably need to email Mike. info@flynn-golf.com

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Haven’t checked lately but they did not have left handed clubs and pretty sure they still don’t.

It has been 7 years since we ordered from Flynn so I went to the site to check and they do have demo lefty irons. I'm thinking you'd need to place a special one off order with him if you wanted them desperately.

Another reason to stick with US Kids clubs IMO.

For what its worth, last Christmas I ordered my daughter a custom Flynn hybrid. Here we are a year later and having that pink shafted hybrid that she loves hitting is part of the reason she stuck with golf this year and made massive improvements.  I'm a big believer that at her age (10) the game just needs to be fun and having a club that feels custom to you and is easier to hit makes the game just slightly more addictive.

As she grows out of other clubs I'll only be buying from Flynn for her until she graduates to the other OEMs.  Love that its a smaller company that has taken kids golf serious and made a great product.
