Combination of Sonartec SS3.5 and YS7

mizuno

Recommended Posts

I am looking to replace my current 3 wood. I found a used Sonartec SS 3.5 with a YS7 shaft at a great price. Unfortunately, this shop doesn't have a hitting cage. The YS7 shaft according to the website has a mid/high kickpoint. My concern is that the combination of the 3.5 and the YS7 shaft may launch the ball too low for my swing. My driver swing speed based on a recent driver fitting was consistently 98-101 mph. I carry my current 3 wood 240-250 off a tee and 230-240 off the deck.

Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this specific combination. Ideally, yes I would hit it first, but they don't have a hitting bay and although I can bring it back for store credit I would only receive 80% credit. Plus I am out of town on business and I am not sure when I will be back up this way.

Thanks for any insights.

At this point I will settle for any comments on the YS7 shaft.

Well here goes, ( FWIW)... the YS-7 does hit launch the ball lower than many of the other shafts in the GD lineup. The question is more of how much lower and that is going to depend on you to an extent. What have you been playing in a 3W &/or Driver that had a shaft that you liked or hit well. It's a bit easier to offer some "insight" if we know more about what has worked for you in the past. ( or currently for that matter) I would think the Sonartec in combination with the YS-7 is going to be a fairly low hitting and demanding 3 wood. Not "impossible" or anything, it's jsut goign to be a setup for a higher ball hitter wanting to bring the ball flight down. Also was it a YS-7 or one of the newer "+" series/versions?

I used to hit the SS-2.5 version with the YS-6+ shaft and it gave me a good launch angle. I have since traded that club in and I now have the SS-3.5 version with the Fujikura 26.3, although I have a Diamana Blueboard 73 coming soon.

I think the launch angle will be fine for you given your specs. I'm traditionally a low ball hitter and found the launch angle with the YS-6+ to work fine for me. I switched because I wanted a slightly heavier shaft and a deeper faced 3-wood. My driver swing speed is just under yours.

I've also hit the YS-9.1+ in a Ping G5 3-wood and had no problems with launch angles either. That shaft is heavier and has a higher kickpoint than the YS-7 but nothing that caused me a problem with the launch angle.

Not exactly an apples to apples comparison but I hope this helps.

I say go for it!

Thanks guys!

To answer your questions divotsplus. My current 3 wood is an old Callaway Big Bertha Warbird which came with the stock Callaway shaft (RCH 96 S). I haven't been able to find any information on the shaft, but I suspect it has a mid kickpoint based on the feel and ball flight. It is the oldest club in my bag (6-7 years) and although I still hit it well, I feel like its time for a new 3 wood. I currently carry a Sonartec md and really like its ball flight and have been looking at the GS tour as a potential replacement. Also I have hit the ss3.5 in the past and was impressed with it both off a tee and off the deck.

A used club shop has the ss3.5 with a YS7+ for $99 which seems too good to pass up and had me seriously considering walking out with it right then and there. Not being familiar with the YS series and not being able to hit it I decided to wait and research it first. After looking at the YS website my feeling is the YS6 would be a better fit for my swing, but having no experience with the YS series I thought I would ask the question here. If the shop had a hitting bay that would given me a better sense as well.

To answer your second question it is a YS7+ shaft.

i wanted a little more "kick", especially off the deck, but still have a tight shaft. I had a GD Purple Ice installed and Pured in my 15* Sonartec SS-3.5. Seems to do the job well but I'm ready to try something different. If you are interested, I can meet or beat the $99 price you were quoted. Email me at mainlinegolferATcomcast.net if you want to discuss further. I've owned many different Sonartecs.

i like the ys7+ a lot. It feels tight while still giving that smooth sort of sensation through impact. i get mine pretty high off the tee, a bit less from the deck. that said, i wouldn't classify it as a demanding shaft elevation wise.

i hit my 3 wood about 10- 15 yards farther than you and find the x flex just about perfect, i'd say a stiff would fit you well.

as an added bonus, those guys at sonartec know what they're doing. they don't make a bad fairway wood.

it's got a big tour presence for a reason, good dispersion with a consistent ballflight. i hope it treats you just as well.
