Are my length and lie angles an issue?

hey guys,

 

want to make sure it's not the arrow here.

 

I was cleaning my clubs last night after having multiple range sessions. One thing I noticed was that I am striking all my irons towards the heel of the club.

 

My irons are +1/2 inch and 2* upright.

 

I did a search and learned that hitting close to the heel is possibly due to club length.

 

My ball flight is typically a fade. Again, assuming it's not the indian, could the lie angles be too upright causing the heel to dig at impact thus opening the face?

 

I bought these irons last year direct from Callaway. Never bothered to have the lies checked. For those playing forged irons, how often do you get your lies checked?

Heel digging should cause a draw, as the toe can continue to move unimpeded, I think - and the compound face angle shouldn't matter much at that point. Try choking down half an inch and see how it goes.

ok. thanks for clarifying. was getting it backwards.

Will try choking down a bit. I recall (can't recollect fully) when getting fitter, the fitter said I was a tweener as in, he could put me standard length but not as much upright adjusting needed.

typically it is the opposite i would think. lies that are too upright often are revealed by pulling the ball especially with the short irons

If your clubs are too long you will see either a scattered impact pattern or possible strikes towards the heel. A club that is too long will also make the club effectively more upright(1* for every 1/2" too long)
The lie influences the shot though face plane tilt where the compound angle between the loft and the lie changes where the centre of the face is aiming. heel/toe digging is a myth coming from the fact we've commonly seen lie diagnosed with sole tape
To see if there is an issue hit shots with face tape/powder to check wether the length is right including trying a shorter shaft to see if the strike changes. You are looking for positive posture and consistent quality of strike. If there is then a directional issue then check the lie again with face tape and a sharpie line vertical on the ball, if the line appears vertical then the lie is ok, pointing to the toe too up and vice versa

If you're at a range with mats, check the sole of your club to see where the green stuff is. If it is all concentrated on the heel, they may be too upright. The sole should be hitting the turf (or mat) flush and the green mat grass should be spread evenly across it.

You can also search WRX for the "lie angle sharpie test" which will also be able to give you an idea if you have the proper lie angle.
