I'm done with Superstroke putter grips

I've always been a above average putter. I have to be now that I've gotten older and don't have the distance I once had. I joined the Superstroke craze last year and had a so so year with the putter. This year my lag putting has been horrible. I've had more 3 putts this year than I have ever had. A week or so ago I switched back to a regular golf pride grip and the difference has been dramatic. Three rounds since the switch and I've had two 3 putts. I had no feel what so ever with the super strokes. I'm done with them.

Probably a headweight thing but sounds good.

Not simply a headweight thing for me as i tried several different SS models and weights before I jumped off the bandwagon too, For me the feel is about as good as having a handtowel wrapped around it. Though the heavier Ss ones felt a bit better. Switched back to a Winn AVS midsize and the feel is back, and so are the results more importantly.

To each his own.

I've tried several sizes and styles so I don't think that's the case. The feel off the face just never felt right.

Putting is so much about feel. If I could putt the conventional way instead of with a saw grip, I'd still use a SuperStroke grip. Now I use a 3.0 but love the Flatso 1.0 for conventional putting.

I think superstroke grips are the best in the world but obviously not everyone agrees.

I hated them for the longest time, too... thought it was all a gimmick but I had an old Taylormade Daytona Ghost in the garage and a spare SS 2.0 so I threw it on and it has been the best feeling putter I have used to date. Also have a 2.0 on my Odyssey Protype black and while I like it, it just doesn't have the same feel of the TM. I think it really depends on other factors involved, but use what works!

I just switched back to the pistolero on my Newport 2 from two years with a Superstroke. Not sure my stroke is better, but I definitely have more feel with the stroke. But what's most noticeable is the feel at impact is better. I have to be more cognizant not to get too wristy, but I'm liking it.

I went through 3 SS before I found one that worked but the putter is what I think made the difference. Had the 2.0, Slim 1.0 and the Flatso. Tried them all on an Odyssey two ball, a #7 and a Ping Redwood Anser and had no feel for any combination. I picked up a B60 and put the Flatso on it and it was like magic. Great feel and distance control.

Putting is so much feel, you just need to focus on what works for the putter and you!

I have tried big putter grips twice and they didn't work for me either. I am using an Ionic midsized and really like it.

I've been using a Winn jumbo, regular round iron grip on my putter. It's tan in color. It's not that big and is very soft and spongey. Being round, it's reallycomfortable not feeling ridges.
Really promotes soft hands. You might want to try it.

I putted for years with an oversized Tigershark grip back in the 1980s and 1990s, as big as the SS but heavier. I putted very well all those years, but wasn't playing as much as I have the past 10-15 years. Around 2000 went away from them, don't remember why.... I tried an Odyssey this year with a SS 2.0, just couldn't get the hang of it, for some reason, I had a hard time with pulling putts with it. I tried others in the pro shop/practice green with the same grip, and had the same problem. I felt it was someway that my hands gripped the club and where the pressure was applied, some how I would close the face due to my left had grip, something I wasn't doing before or after with other putter/grip combinations. Now I've gone back to an old Yes Emma I have had for about 7 years or so, it has a slightly oversized grip, I seem to be rolling the ball decent again.

I can't stand Super Strokes, the weird tapering throws my hands and stroke off and I can't make anything with it. Works well for a lot of guys but not for everyone.

I think it is for sure down to the individual person on whether they like the SS grips. But I have noticed that the people whom use their wrists more in putts (and are successful at doing so) end up not liking the super stroke grips. Naturally this is because it changes the entire feel for them and when you use your wrists/hands in the stroke it is so much about feel for that player.

I can easily see how SS remove that feel. I was just messing around with how much I felt the toe of a putter fly through impact with a small grip vs it feeling more dead with a superstroke. The difference wasn't really the grip, it was because my stroke was different with each one.

So this thread is bound to be many people saying they love it, and then just as many people saying they hate it. Really the only way to know is to try. At least you gave it a shot.

I think it's a good thing to try if you are struggling. The person who has two of the same putters with just two grips is on to something. I was thinking of doing something similar with counterbalance vs no counterbalance.

Clearly true, but I wonder if it's also down to the type of putter head. My guess is that the bigger grips work less well with all the Anser type heads, especially the lighter weight ones.

I think that mallets is where the Superstroke grips really help. Heavier and larger heads stay on line better with the larger grip size.

The Winn Pro X might be another option for those who prefer a larger grip to consider. I found the Winn Pro X had a little more feel than any of the four SS models I tried. I was more comfortable with it, though light for me (the 1.18 model) at 54g. It still is on my spare Versa 7.

I still prefer the Winn AVS midsize as stated earlier in this thread. I use a "saw" putting grip.

That's a valid question as well and I was hesitant to put it on my Newport 2.5. But once I found out the standard Scotty grips weigh 70-80 grams, I went ahead with it and I love it. What is odd is the SS 2.0's weigh about 50 grams. But the SS1.0's weigh more like the stock Scotty grips. It's pretty interesting to me.

I have a few different weights for my putter so I could mess around with the right feel. I didn't have to go higher in weight with the SS2.0, but I did simply go from it to the 2.0XL + and added 3 inches to the shaft. This made the head feel slightly lighter so I'm playing with weights that are 5 grams heavier now to get the right balance.

I haven't been on a real green yet so I'm not 100% sure if I'll keep the extra weight, but a first it feels right that way. It's the great thing about putters with changeable weights. You can really do what you want to length and grip wise and then adjust the weights to what you need.
