Actually it can't hurt Seemore.

If he wins they look great, if he putts bad everybody will just say it's Sergio as usual.

does anyone actually blame the poor putting on the putter and not the golfer? I bet there are tons of pro golfers near the bottom of the putting stats that use Scotty Cameron putters.

Also, Sergio is not that bad of a putter. Currently, he's ranked 50th in putting average...ahead of some notable names like Brad Faxon, Adam Scott, Scott Verplank, C Howeell III, Ian Poulter, Stuart Apleby, Luke Donald, Boo Weekley, Camilo Villegas, Steve Elkington, Geoff Ogilvy and Trevor Immelman...none of which we would probably consider to be "poor putters".

Ha, I think it's when you've got a new putter and you tell your golf buddies Sergio is using one, they laugh at ya.

It's way more perception and reputation than stats.

I think Sergio's issue is green reading not putter, I've gone to the WGC in Akron Oh the last 4 years and watched him put on the greens, i even talked to his dad who's at most of his events walking around the course with a wedge. I think he needs to ditch the lefthand low and jut read greens a little better. The guy hits the ball a mile and hits LOT'S of greens just can't make the 6-10 foot putts on a consistent basis.

I think that's he gets a rep for being a poor putter. He knocks it close so often and misses so many of them that it magnifies the situation.

No... he's a bad putter... I have seen him putt in person. He used to be a good putter though.

Never said he wasn't, just saying the fact that hit hits it pretty close all the time only magnifies it. If you hit it a long way away and are a decent lag putter, you look better.

I think this was intended to be some good natured ribbing. Its probably safe to say that many of the people here would give their left almond to have Sergio's game.

I'd give my right one as well. Sergio has more natural talent than 95% of players on tour. Sometimes I just want to fly over to where he is and give him a thoroughly good kicking for not using his full potential.

Putting stats can hide a lot of sins. It'll be a cold day in hell when I call Sergio a better putter than Brad Faxon. There are worse putters than Sergio, his problem is within 10 feet. I wouldn't bet on him making 6 out of 10 putts from this range which just isn't good enough to compete with the likes of Tiger.

Maybe it's just me but I always thought that Sergio's rep as a bad putter came from his putting performances on the final days of big competitions.

I don't know if the stats will bear me out on this but I do know that he has one of the worst set of stats for final rounds in majors compared to his previous 3 rounds. It's something along the lines of several shots worse and surely putting is a large part of that.

I think that he is possibly the best ball striker playing today and although he's been incredibly successful on tour for someone his age, he has underdelivered on his talents in the majors.

lots of misconceptions and perceptions without stating any statistics to back them up. If Sergio made 6 our ot 10 putts from just 6 feet out, that would be phenomenal as studies prove that PGA pros make an average of 50% of their putts from that range. (1/5=.2 so 20% better than the average touring pro).

http://golf.about.com/b/a/257950.htm

"Many years ago there was a segment during a golf broadcast on television in which the field reporter asked numerous PGA Tour pros what percentage of 6-foot putts they made. (This was obviously in the days before StatLink). Most of the pros guessed around 85 to 90-percent.

Only Ben Crenshaw - no surprise - got it right: touring pros were making only half their putts from six feet.

If Ben Crenshaw only makes half the 6-footers he makes, what percentage do you and I - "regular" golfers - make? It's a good guess to answer "much lower.""

http://www.probablegolfinstruction.com/putting_alignment.htm

"Another study by Carnahan entitled, "Experimental Study of Effects of Distance, Slope and Break on Putting Performance for Active Golfers," measured 1 putt percentages of golfers: touring pros, 1 - 14 handicappers and 15 - 30 handicappers. He found that on a 6 foot putt, the one putt percentages are 50%, 45% and 35% respectively."

I can't believe I'm sticking up for Sergio in this thread. I'm really not a big fan of his, but I think he has a bad (undeserved) reputation on putting.

I agree with you. He is in contention a lot at some of the biggest tournaments and has not performed as well on the greens on Sunday as Tiger has in the past. I'm willing to bet that perception woudl change with one good putting performance during a major if he wins it.

Wow, pro's only make 50% of putts from 6 feet? I'm not doubting the info but i'd be interested to see more recent stats or another opinion.

You're right though, I haven't got any stats to back up my comments. Merely through observation than anything else. He's one of the best ball strikers in the game but he looks like the average hacker when faced with a short putt (especially on Sunday as someone else stated).

Like others have mentioned Sergio hits the ball much closer more often than the average pro so his putting stats should be much better than average. I also agree about the green reading part. Whenever I see him putting he seems to be mostly miss reading the putts when he misses. Maybe he needs a cue from a guy like Phil and pick up a really good caddie who can read the greens with or for him.

Maybe just Sergio's misses come when they count the most.

Granted Sergio is the greatest putter by any means he is still a much better golfer than I ever will be so I wont bash him or his game at all.

I think eventually he will find the cure all for the problem he has and then when that happens he will be at or near the top of leaderboard more than he is now. He will be very dangerous once his putting straightens out.
