Are the Dormie Club and Tobacco Road as great as they look?
They are as good as they look. Dormie is one of the better courses I have played. I have never played a course like like Tobacco Road. One of the most fun experiences playing golf I have ever had
I've looked at the pictures on "Breaking Eighty"'s review of Tobacco Road a ton of times - it looks like a blast to play.

Dormie Club: Coore/Crenshaw... What else needs to be said? Their work is awesome.

Not going to lie, reading this is making me very jealous! :censored2:

Are these all "golf specific trips" or are some of these playing a couple rounds while on a "general vacation".
My trips to Michigan have been golf specific with my buddies. The other locations are rounds that I was able to get away and play while on vacation with my wife.

I've begun the early stages of planning on my 2016 golf trip. We'll stay in the Midwest and try to keep it under $500 for 4 rounds and 3 nights, while still playing at least 1 top 100 public course in the country.

1st: What was your favorite trip out of all of them?

2nd: How do you rank the Sheboygan/Kohler area courses between:
- Blackwolf Run, River
- Blackwolf Run, Meadow Valleys
- Whistling Straits, Irish
- Whistling Straits, Straits
- The Bull
- Pine Hills CC

It's really interesting to hear out-of-towners' opinions on this. They tend to go a certain way - my guess is you MIGHT lean that way, too...
The trip to Ireland is my favorite. I'd encourage anyone who has the chance to make that trip. Within the US, last year's California trip is my favorite. But it was a whole lot of $$ and is unlikely to be repeated. Specifically the round at Pebble.

I'd rate the Sheboygan courses:
Straits
Irish
River
Meadow
Pine Hills
Bull

When a course like the Bull is 6th, you have an embarrassment of riches.

Oh absolutely. What I was half expecting was for Pine Hills to be considerably higher - a lot of the golf enthusiasts I've spoken with who have made that trip will say Pine Hills is their favorite, even including the Straits course! They are both phenomenal, as are the other four but Pine Hills is so classically good.

Another interesting thing that comes in is the Meadow Valleys course. Raters, etc. usually rank it as the fourth best of the Kohler properties, but that back nine (other than 10, which I think is a terrible hole) is phenomenal especially from 13-16 and 18. I think 14 is the best par four, maybe the best golf hole, in the entire state.

Our trip's break downs over the last 15 years as such... not going to list the courses as I am not sure I could remember them all...LOL

South Carolina (5 times) Myrtle Beach was the early and top choice. About every other year but we have not gone back in the last 4 years.
Arizona (3 times) Phoenix - Tucson area
Nevada (2 Times) Vegas .... but of course =)
Washington (1 time) Seattle region and south Washington
New Mexico (1 time) Farmington ...Road trip through Colorado down and back. Our first which started it all.....
Nebraska (1 Time) Western side of state and probably the best trip we have ever done...IMHO!
Montana (1 Time) Old Works to Wilderness club and what was in between. grew up there so took the guys to play and some good fishing..
Oregon (1 Time) Bend area...went with Family and a few good friends. Great golf, food, people and area in general. Plan on going back.

Adding Texas in October...sort of.. (Austin / San Antonio area but only looking like 3-4 rounds...but still getting something in I guess)

Edit: Nevada included St George/Mesquite both times. So few nights up there and few nights in Vegas...so Utah could be on list the I guess.

I enjoyed both courses tremendously, but the round at Greywalls was probably the most memorable round of golf of my life.

The conditions were impeccable when I made my visit, and the greens were running quite fast. The rolling terrain, rock outcroppings, and views of Lake Superior made it the most visually appealing course that I've played.

Not to be a pitch man, but early last year while planning my 2014 summer golf trip, I stumbled upon WiscoGolfAddict's site (then WiscoSportsAddict.com I believe), and it was a great site to look at reviews of courses in the Midwest. It really drove my decision to go to the UP of Michigan and play the 3 courses that I played up there.

Thank you so much for the compliments, GDane! That is why I put all of the effort in - I will probably never get paid for it, but I enjoy it and if I can help people enjoy the game of golf and find cool places to play then that's awesome!

What were your thoughts on the "Upper Peninsula Trio" in Michigan? Greywalls is an adventure isn't it? I love those courses. You'd be hard pressed to find a better conditioned course than Sweetgrass, TimberStone is a wonderful track and Greywalls is absolutely one-of-a-kind.

Thanks again, and if you're ever in the Milwaukee area and looking for a round let me know!

One more thing: Have you ever played Chicago Highlands down by you (Westchester?)? I'm playing there on 9/1 for the annual Wisconsin vs. Illinois "Writer's Cup" - don't know much about it, but looks very linksy.

Best regards,

Paul

'Lot of very good golf in Texas. Houston, San Antonio, and Austin all have enough top courses for a trip each. I still need to get to the Dallas/Ft Worth area.

You can't go wrong with Wisconsin, either. Besides Kohler and Erin Hills, there are many excellent courses in the south-central part of the state.

Bandon should be on everyone's bucket list.

Hey no problem Paul. I still stop by your site periodically to check for new reviews.

The 'perfect 4some' trip really is a great loop of courses. It's a shame that it's such a drive from chicago, or else I'd go up there every year. All 3 courses are so different from each other, yet they are all great tracks. Greywalls was the most memorable experience on a golf course of my life, and the only course that rivals that for me in terms of terrain and beauty is Quintero down in Arizona.

Sweetgrass is the linksy style course that I usually favor, and the conditioning was probably the best public course conditioning I've ever played. At the chicago golf show there was talk about a 2nd course being added to the Sweetgrass facility, but I haven't seen any updates online yet. We all enjoyed Timberstone as well, especially the 17th and 18th holes.

I drive by Chicago Highlands every day for work, but to my knowledge it is private, so I've never been able to play. The website makes it look like it would be right up my alley. I hope you're able to put a review together when you're done there!

17 at TimberStone is [in my opinion] the most fun par three tee shot in the entire Midwest! I've been trying forever to get an answer on the total elevation change from tee to green, but no one ever seems to know that kind of info. Would love to find out, though, it's a 3-5 club elevation change!

I have got to get to Scotland and Ireland, but it's difficult traveling as a single when most packages are based on double occupancy.

you could easily do scotland as a single and likely play better courses as a walk on. stay in a hostels in edinburgh(cow gate) and st andrews(there is one on the main drag) and you wont eat expensive hotel bills, rent a car to get around. it would be a super easy trip to plan, in fact i wouldnt even book golf until i got there. we had some ideas and would play our morning round and talk with the head pro during lunch and they would make some calls and off we would go for the 2nd round.

Collectively the par 3's at Quintero (Arizona) have the greatest elevation change of any course I've played. Each has to be easily 2 to 4 club lengths.

Another course with awesome elevation changes on their par 3's is Hawk's View in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin - the 3rd and 17th are tremendously downhill as parts of the site were formerly a ski hill:

Under $100 to play - lots of great options in that Lake Geneva area, especially Geneva National's Player and Palmer courses (love them).
