Original Putter Design

My Shot

I had a putter design that was based on the Mills Fleetwood, but I ran into issues with the hosel design. I did not want to mess with getting that right. So I scraped that model, along with work i was doing on the frequency analysis of various hosel designs.

So I cheaped out and went with a double bend shaft. The design is shown below. I am working on getting it milled. If that works out I can show the finished product once it is milled. Note that the lines that you see on the design are simply the edges of the individual faces that make up the solid. They will not be there in the final product.

The putter is a combo of the PING Darby with a touch of influence from the PING CRAZ-E

Face - Darby shape, fat and stocky

From adress - again similar to the Darby, but with a wave added to the sweep from the face towards the heel. Intended to move the weight towards the back corners while maintaining a styled shape rather than sharp edges. Note that the shape of the back section is to appear similar to the PING CRAZ-E (another one of my favorites).

Total weight is targeted at 355g - now after milling :friends:

Hopefully I can get a few of these made. I have two designs at 72* and 70*. This is a total shot in the dark as to how close I have calculated everything.

Nice design. Solid Works? What is the material?

The calculated weight should be accurate, as long as the density is specific enough (ie, not just the density for stainless, but the exact type of stainless). Depending on how much sanding, polishing, and sandblasting is done in the finishing process, it may come in 1-2 grams light if it's milled to size. But the accuracy of CAD software calculating weight is extremely good.

Have you had it priced at a shop yet? There are virtually no flat surfaces to clamp on to, so some specialized fixturing will have to be made (probably milled vise jaws). This will up the cost a whole bunch, as this has to be designed and milled.

I'm not trying to be critical in any way, just giving a bit of a heads up from a machinist's perspective.

This was done in UGS NX. Does not take that long to do with a fairly simple design. I did not spend a lot of time on the back section. There are some issues that I do not like, but I will deal with them in the second go 'round.

The material will most likely be 316L stainless, but I am not 100% sure at this point.

It should be milled on a 5 axis CNC machine. I have not gotten word back from my friend at work that is going to program the tool paths about any fixturing issues. Yeah, I have the costs all in hand. It will be a no cost deal if all goes well :friends:

The plan is to use this one as a test piece. Then I will use it, my Darby and a Fleetwood as the basis for one last design to get things right. Nothing is finalized at this point, so I still have my fingers crossed.

Looks like this putter will finally see the light of day. It is going to be milled live at a trade show in Germany. Apparently there will be 20 milling machines set up to mill things live as give aways and this putter head will be one of them. Now, hopefully I can get some myself.

I am not sure if you are using NX3 and may already know this, but go to Preferences>Visualization>Shade & set your Shaded Face Edges to Off. This will get rid of the shaded edge highlights shown in your screen shots. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

I am not sure if you are using NX3 and may already know this, but go to Preferences>Visualization>Shade & set your Shaded Face Edges to Off. This will get rid of the shaded edge highlights shown in your screen shots. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

Actually this was done in NX5. The edges are on to aid in visualization of the part so that I did not have to go in and do advanced shading to get a good view of it. With them off and using basic shading it was much harder to see the deails of the surfaces so I just left them on. At some point I will have to go in and do some advanced rendering to see if I can get a nice shot, maybe with a reflective surface below the part. That will take some learning on my part...
