Ozik and the "internet golf geeks"

Recommended Posts

just read the new Golf Punk
So I'm in Ireland for the semester studying abroad. Country's wonderful, I've had a blast (in and outside pubs). One nice thing is that there are twice as many foreign golf magazines. Golf Punk is targeted at the younger golfer, with more on fashion and new equipment trends.

In this month's section on new equip. there was a picture of an ozik. it's description was that it was 'taking over the world of the internet golfing geek'.

Now I know a lot has been made about the cost-benefit of the ozik shafts, but I'm not touching that subject with a 60 ft. pole. I just thought it's kind of impressive to see the effect of internet forums (whichever forum they may be referring to) on the golf world. I'm still waiting for a golfwrx shout out.

sorry for you guys across the pond, but that mag "golf punk" is really a 2bit rag of a magazine.

Gotta disagree with you there TK. I think GP is funny, has great photography, and doesn't clutter up pages with millions of contradictory tips that I would never read anyway because I have an instructor I pay for that.

GP is just different than golf sports mags. It's aimed to be a golf and lifestyle mag. But its not a 2bit rag. And if subscriptions weren't so expensive in the U.S., I would already have one.

I suppose it depends on what you're looking for in a golf mag but from my point of view, GolfPunk is the best out there.

It's a breath of fresh air and the writers are hilarious (maybe you didn't grasp the sense of humour). I actually stopped buying golf mags because the front cover was always about 'curing your slice' but when GolfPunk came out, I was sold again.

I actually see the content as being quite similar to this site. As far as equipment goes, they introduce people to the Japanese brands and the custom putter makers that people might not already know about. The fashion section is excellent, it's like reading GQ for golfers.

There's very little golf/swing advice but that's not what they're marketing at.

I made the mistake of picking up a copy of Golf Digest, the one with this years hotlist (the reason I bought it) and i've never been so bored in my life. Once I got through the adverts to the equipment section I found that either they don't know what they're talking about or they're too scared to say anything bad about a particular club for fear that the manufacturer would sue. Never again!

I'll take the bunker babes over Jim Flick telling me how not to hit it fat anyday.

Exactly Villa. A golf magazine with a GQ perspective (except without the snobbery you sometimes find in GQ.) I think the guys at GolfPunk hit on a totally original concept for a golf magazine. Fun to read, but still taking the game seriously. By far my favorite golf magazine - and I'm in the U.S.

And funny (Top 20 Daft Golf Trophies from the December issue killed me. :partytime2: ).

And I like the fact that they tell you who is testing the clubs in their reviews, have players of different abilities (LabMonkeys), tell you which player liked which club (so you can look at the reviewer with a similar handicap and see what they thought), and you see clubs reviewed that you don't always see in other magazines (both high-end exotics, and lesser expensive brands who still make quality gear.)

I would LOVE to see a GolfPunk U.S.!

And one last story and then I'll shut up:

I was able to locate an issue at a local Barnes & Noble bookstore a few weeks ago and so I took it with me that day when I got my haircut so I would have something to read while I waited for my turn with my "stylist."1 When I was getting my hair cut, I set the magazine down on a table and, after a little while, a few of the female stylists saw the GolfPunk name and picked it up to look at it. I started hearing "Oh" and "Ahhh" from behind me. None of them play golf, but they started asking the about it because they wanted to get it for their boyfriends/husbands because it wasn't a "boring golf magazine."

1If you saw me, the fact that I go to a "stylist" would crack you up as much as it cracks me up. I am no Ian Poulter. Closer to Jim Furyk than Poulter. But I've been going to her since she got her license, she's good, she's close, and she's hot.

I wonder how big we make this thread if we keep adding massive quotes!

Basically you go to her because she's hot. You don't have to lie and say that she's good and she's close. I agree with GQ being perhaps a bit snobbish (I couldn't think of a better comparison for male fashion information).

I read a great quote from one of the celebrities (U.K Radio D.J) who said "Being a GolfPunk is about respecting the rules but still being an individual". I know that's a bit profound but I like it.

I'll post some quotes from 'top 20 Seve moments' tomorrow. It's hilarious.

true, bought 1 issue, and only 1. Nothing can compare to Todays Golfer for unbiased, detailed equipment reviews.

Thats the funniest thing Ive read here for a while. TG is actually the worst culprit when it comes to hawking the major OEMs. Ad spend talks huge with that publication (and most others I should add).

Golf Punk brings something very fresh to the table and features far more interesting, obscure and high quality equipment, as well as lauding the superior quality of tour gear. As a Golfwrx member I would have thought you'd have recognised the difference. maybe you should read more than 1 issue of GP and check out the wide range of manufacturers and interest in the industry high end, rather than the same retail kit all the other mags blow on about.

I want to know about brands I haven't heard of before, I want to read hilarious interviews about what pro's get up to off the course, I want to read about golf fashion, I want Jokes, I want betting tips, and more important than anything else I WANT TO SEE HOT GIRLS IN BIKINI'S SWINGING A GOLF CLUB!

Todays Golfer/Golf World/Golf Monthly etc etc aren't terrible, they just don't interest me.

I am in the States and totally bored by Golf Mags, though I do read them. I used to read Todays Golfer but then realized they like every club Mizuno puts out and have not read it since. Golf punk sounds good I 'll check it out.

tvm, you can't force people to like things but I don't see how you can knock GP as at least its trying to do something different. I know loads of people in the US who love it and would recommend it to anybody looking for some laughs and different slant on things.

The best bit for me is the focus on tour players at different levels/tours, much more interesting to me than pages of regurgited tuition and swing theory.

Oh yeah, as villa mentioned...the bunker babes are hot!!! :partytime2:

You can't force people to like something......And yet by that same token, you can't force someone not to have their opinions by knocking GP either.

The magazine sales of GP will be the proof of it's worth in the golf industry, and not by our debate here.

I've bought a few issues of golf-punk and have to say that it's pretty crap in my opinion.

Fair enough, they're trying to do something a bit different, but that something amounts to trying to combine golf with fhm for some reason. I'm in my mid 20s and would probably fall exactly into the demographic they are looking to target, but even I find 'bunker babes' a bit of a pathetic attempt to inject some 'yoof attitude!' into the golf magazine formula. If I want to look at t---s i'll buy a magazine dedicated to showing t---s! I can barely remember anything else about the magazine, just some pics of various flashy attire that only the most dedicated metrosexual would dream of wearing. Maybe a few interviews with celebrity golfers (and I mean celebrity in the loosest possible terms), and the odd vacuous article on tour players. All in all, it comes across as a magazine written exclusively for Ian Poulter!

Of the other UK magazines, Golf World would probably be my preferred choice as I've found the instruction and equipment articles better than Today's Golfer and Golf Monthly. But, I must say I find all of them pretty disappointing. They provide barely more than 20mins of reading material in one issue, the rest is adverts. Maybe adding t--s is the answer, might get an extra five minutes use out of it!

Hence the popularity of these golf forums, where you can get free, impartial (maybe not with Ozik!) advice and recommendations.

So where is the discussion on the Ozik shafts as the title suggested?

It's on another forum, not this one.

A difficult man to please me thinks!

However, you're completely right. This forum in particular gives me more advice, information and entertainment than any magazine ever could.

Lots of love,

Actually, the Golf Punk was set up by the chap who started "Loaded", which gives a pretty clear indication of its editorial stance!

I find it an interesting but very occasional diversion. Still read the other UK mags each month but agree that the equipment sections of these are now redundant if you are a member here.
