New XR irons click

Former Ping iron player, switched to Callaway XR irons two weeks ago. I hit them fine, but the noise is disconcerting. A loud clicking sound. Tonight I played my league round using a pro v x. Hit a 5 iron well, only to be asked by my opponent, why that shot sounded funny. Anyone else having this issue?

Probably the cup face construction causing that.

Make sure your lie is correct. If they're too upright for you, the sound off the heel will be more "clacky" than "clicky".

The more I think about it, the sound is similar to a hosel rocket. I have used non-permanent markers and can see I am hitting the ball close to the sweet spot. I bought the XR driver a few months ago. At a fitting, I loved the feel and especially the sound of the XR driver. Totally opposite the irons. Does the cup face act as a rebound effect, maybe causing the clicking?

I noticed the same sound when hitting these irons. The XR Pros have the same sound. I find the G Max irons are loud too.

I've gone from Ping i20s to the XR irons and they are a lot louder defiantly because of the cup tech in my opinion. I don't really notice it after a few holes anymore

Try them with a soft golf ball.

But sound is something that can be filtered out after a while. Think of the background sounds right now in your environment that aren't being heard until you concentrate on them.

The clicking of the keyboard, a background fan, and that sort of thing. Maybe even your wife yakking.

I'd say, "Stop concentrating on the sound." But that is like the old canard, "Don't think about a rabbit." And of course, you do.

Thanks for your replies. In the early 70s I bought my first set of Pings. The older gentleman in the shop told me they may be the ugliest club ever made. He said the company will never be successful. I bought them and in spite of their looks, were a great set of irons. I should probably look at these XR's the same way. In spite of the sound, they do perform. Also, most of my buddies are hard of hearing, and I probably will be within a few years. So it really doesn't matter.

Plus remember you got used to metal woods. Those old persimmon sure sounded a lot different!

The clicky sound is a spring face iron thing. I've got some spring face Yonex irons that sound the same way, but I'm not sure about slot irons like Taylormades.

Even though both are cast, Ping puts effort into creating a more "Forged" sound than most manufacturers. I played RocketBlades Tour irons and they had a noticeable click and then switched to I25 and the sound was much closer to the Apex Pro's I have now

i have the XR's and LOVE the click sound they make when you put a great strike on the ball. Nothing like it... sounds great.

[/quote]ive hit them a ton indoors and they do have a strange click sound. At first I didn't like it then I began to love it. You can do a search on Wrx lots of people have commented on it. Most people like it and some don't hear it at all.

I have been playing my XR irons since April. At first I noticed the click from time to time, but not any more. Absolutely love my irons.

I like the fact that the click is followed by a high flight baby draw that lands softly oh so far down there.

I don't notice the sound with mine. Perhaps because it's drowned out by all the "nice shot!" I'm hearing from playing partners.
