graphite shaft extension question

Hey Guys,

Looks like my friend got a little too roudy slamming his truck the other day and broke his driver about 4" down the shaft under the grip.

My question is would i be able to cut it past the damage and extend it 3" or is it already beyond fix because the shaft itself will be compromised? Thanks for the input in advance.

4" is a long way down. if it were within an inch or two i'd say you might be able to make it work. i'd say to be on the safe-side and get a whole new shaft. that sucks man...

Is he a good golfer? I believe I was told a 2 inch extension isn't noticeable for most players. 4 inches is a little much but shouldn't cost much to try and depending on how good a golfer he is he may not even notice the difference.

Replace it. Hard to see cracks in graphite. It's probably as cheap to buy an Ebay pull as it is to buy and install an extension.

Hey guys,

Your opinions lined up pretty well with mine. I looked into it further and removed the grip, it's broken off at a solid 4.5", which means at least 5" gone by the time i try to cut away the damage. Beyond repair for sure. My coworker kind of knew his fate but i told him i would look into it for him since i've been doing the gripping/shafting of all their clubs as of late.

It's not so much how it might effect the flex or feel of the shaft but how strong it will be. So the "safe" amount you can extend the club is going to be somewhat dependent on how aggressive or fast the swing. Most manufacturers of the extensions don't recommend more than 3" and that can also be conditional on the flex/swing speed. e.g. in one case, the recommendation in the installation instructions might say: 3" for ladies/senior, 2.5" for reg flex, and 2" max for stiff and x-stiff. That seems to me to be a very reasonable approach and a safe way to look at it.

Few of the more experienced builders here will feel safe with more than 2" and some are even more conservative and put the limit at only 1" for faster swing speed players.

I just think a 5 inch extension, possibly longer, is a bit much and since I can't verify the damage inside the shaft I would prefer to just scrap it, which is what my coworker planned to do from the start but I told him I would look into it for him
