Mike Malaska - Getting the club in front of you. Made easy...

Very good stuff. I agree with Mike that the club wants to fall behind us at the top of the swing and that we must do something to counter act this, however, most of us hacks are over plane not under plane so we are countering acting it to be sure! I wish Mike would incorporate this teaching concept with a student who was OTT.

I used this yesterday in a big interclub event and save for two flip long irons on par 3's (*old swing snuck in two appearances ...where I made triple and a double) I hit the ball better than I have in years. Was not able to hit flip hooks with the driver ... just pounded it

Thx for sharing your find OP

I took a lesson from our head pro when I was coming severely under plane and hooking the driver. He had me do a similar move with the driver, had me feel as if the club was working way out in front of me on the way down without moving my right shoulder or hands out. It cured my hooks and for awhile was hitting the driver better than ever.

From my personal experience with lessons from Monte, he does not teach this way. He had me working the hands out to start the downswing then in late.

He's the only one who could really correct us if we're wrong but it does appear to me he teaches the same thing, just not in this manner. Getting the left arm off the chest, having the right and left arms rotate coming down, no turn cast. I could be very wrong but it seems to be the same concepts, just different feels to get you in the right position. I also imagine based on what your swing looks like the results may be a little different, these methods are all great but each one of us probably need some form of modification based on our habits.

Im also curious to hear what the teaching pros have to say about this "feel". Here's another video with an explanation.

I say get Malaska posting here and let's have us another guru. Things have been getting stale for a while. We need some new drills to get us through another long winter. There's been little to fight, I mean discuss about lately. The villagers are restless for a new sheriff and willing to pay a decent salary. The layoff is dead. Long live the.... Pile drive???

I have a tendency to be really steep but this move feels good. Interested to try it out on the range.

I think it works for me well as per my trackman lesson back in July .... I was identified as really laying the club off coming down and coming way too far from the inside ( I did a post on it )

I've been working on the wrong thing. This really helped me w driver hooks

Hacks steepen early and shallow late by early extension and flip.
Good golfers shallow early and steepen late. The Malaska move is a great steepen late idea. The speed is created by lead arm rotation while clubhead fleeing outward not pulling.

I'm an OTT flipper/picker and this prevents an OTT move if done correctly. It also seems to shallow the AOA. When I do it right, I'm hitting the ball solid and straight. It doesn't seem like it should work but as Malaska says, it's about feel. You don't really stand the club up on the d/s but you get your hands inside the path of the club head, rotate the left arm and let centripetal force do the rest.

My cleek is sometimes peevish.

Perhaps this might help the discussion and tie up some loose ends and bring Mike's concept together for the OTT crowd.

Tried this feel on the range - I hit really solid, but lots of pulls. Would have been really interesting to see video but didn't have time.

The heel of the club needs to lead in order to avoid pull hooks, so he says

Thanks for posting that. I think he says the same thing to the lady in white in the original video. Seems pretty easy to overcook that idea because of his steering wheel analogy - if you make that exact move it seems like the club face would turn down.

Yep. As videos below show. In fact, I think he advocates hitting fades and draws by varying amount of left arm rotation so that face of club is open or shut at impact. That's a little precious for me but maybe for someone with good hands, it's easy enough. I just want to get back to the ball reasonably square.

My cleek is sometimes peevish.

I started watching these in July. Makes sense to me, however there is more than just the Nichol's drill. One thing he discusses in other videos is the hips moving away from the ball as the club moves toward it to counterbalance the momentum. Zipper away feel if you have been watching Monte. If you do that it takes care of the tendency to pull. As a serious underplaner, I really like this drill as it quiets down the body and I feel the right shoulder chasing the club around the body. Really good stuff.

Anyone read the book he keeps referencing?
I went out on a limb and purchased the Kindle version ($15) and it's not bad. A bit basic but he really goes into depth on all the topics he discusses in his videos. He has a great section about the mental game though, and that is something that I am really trying to work on.

I agree this is the same move Manzella has called tumble. It is also the same move Jim Hardy has taught in his One Plane Swing where from the top the hands work down early to the “inner circle” and the club tumbles or flops over and the club head goes out to the “outer circle” He teaches that if you are more bent over at the waist this will get you down to the ball. You can come down over the backswing plane without being “over the top”.

I posted this video in a recent thread on tumble of Jeff Ritter’s explanation of this in relation to what kind of backswing you make.

This video makes a lot of sense and justifies the "turn the corner" move. It's so you aren't throwing your hand OTT or at the ball.
