Hello golfwrx community! I'm Mikes daughter, Ashley Moss. Glad to see that everyone seems to be enjoying his instruction! I know I'm a little bias, but he's the absolute best when it comes to finding the most successful ways to help each individual student. Not to mention he has a passion for the game that is infectious.

I've obviously grown up around the game and have had the opportunity to learn from some of the best players and teachers in the industry. I am now an instructor myself and because of my dads 40 years of experience trying to figure out what helps people the most, I am able to have an extremely successful career.

Some of you have been asking if he has taught what you are seeing in the video for more than just the last year and the answer is yes. Maybe has been explained differently but his philosophy has always been the same. It's not a method he teaches but the idea that no two people are the same and everyone has their own athletic DNA, or "athletic personality" as he refers to it in his book. His knowledge of the body and the physics behind a golf swing are what has helped him understand the best ways to maximize the use of the golf club with minimum effort on the students part.

Most importantly, he doesn't claim that he has come up with the latest and greatest way to swing a golf club. From 40 years of studying, experiencing, and even some trial and error, he has put together what he believes to be the most efficient way to utilize the golf club and simple physics. He has studied other instructors, players, methods, etc and molded the best information together to explain what you are actually trying to accomplish when hitting a golf ball. Then, explains what you have to feel in order to make that happen.

It makes me very happy to read that he has been able to shed some light on some of these misconceptions and help you become better golfers!

Anyone read the book he keeps referencing?
It's really good. The section on the mental game is worth the price of admission. After reading it, I used his mental game to talk with people about life.

I never heard of Malaska until Vaterman posted one of his YouTube videos, now I think he is a valuable source of information.

Welcome to the forum, Ashley! I hope to see more from you and your dad.

Its always good to have input from multiple instructors on this forum. Every student learns differently so finding an instructor who relates information in a way the student can easily understand is the most important aspect of the instructor/student relationship.

Ashley, Welcome to GolfWRX! I've enjoyed the videos and like your Dad's teaching style. It's not the same Golf Digest tips put in a new wrapper! (But, if you guys want to hit the big time, you really need to mention that 'this is what Hogan did'... just sayin')
One question I had was that Mike seems to use the same "feel" of standing the club up on the corners and the hosel working in front of the body from there, but don't some golfers need to feel the club more laid off or to have the hands work out some? (OK, >1 question) Does it change depending on the width or depth a golfer has as the top?
I haven't seen all his videos (or read the book), so maybe it's out there. The model, as presented in the Nichols video, seems like it may be tailored for better golfers (too shallow, too in-to-out). Is that a fair assessment?
Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks Dave,

Was practising at the range today and irons were great but the woods were going right. This explains why but with the woods I have a feel of being out to in. Maybe the shallower backswing with woods contributes to this?

Have just caught up with the latest comments and watched the various links posted. I also watched the follow on to one of the videos regarding momentum where he had (a very young) Jackie Stewart talking about F1 driving. In the video he uses a tennis racket to show how the swing works likening the hands on the golf club to making the same motion as a steering wheel.

I went out into my garden and tried this and it raises an issue I would really like some opinions on.

As someone who does what he describes - moves the handle towards the ball then flips the wrists, I have engrained a feel.
When I try what he says there is a point where the subconscious is almost screaming 'don't do it, you won't be able to use your wrists'.

The answer is of course 'but you won't have to use the wrists if you do it right, the wrists will unhinge themselves'.

We all know what it is like to fight an ingrained feel so I wondered if I could come up with a compromise.

What I did was take the club back so the face kept square to the ball. Yes this looks shut at the top but in reality it isn't. I found I could swing through very comfortably using his method without the conflicting issues when the forearms were rotating more.

Couldn't hit balls because I was trying it in the garden but it felt OK. It also felt I could feed the power in because I was not concerned with the rotation.

Anyone any views on this? Is there any reason why the forearm rotation is necessary? If it is would keeping the face square be an interim measure before adding in the rotatiom.

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Good video Ashley.

SIDEBAR: There was also a video posted in another thread about the heel leading and how it can help hookers and chicken wingers. Try to hit the ground with the heel first ... helped me a lot as well

It ties into the M & A Malaskas' theory in my mind by keeping the club in front of you

I'll report back tomorrow. Second competitive round upcoming this aft with the full Malaska theory ..

I know if I can lose the flip hook completely I can get back down to a 1 or 0 again.

FYI - I find that this thought is MONEY for 30-50 yard pitches as well .. for me anyways

I agree... this is the main reason I don't use his forum much anymore, but this info is important and it's been out there for a while. Brian deserves some credit. I like the way Malaska describes it and he seems like a great guy.

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical watching the video, since I am already kind of 'over the top.' Yet I struggle to get my hands back where they were at address, so I figured I'd give it a try. I went to the range yesterday and had some immediate great results. I think it fits in line with what I was already working on with my instructor, just a different perspective. I have really been struggling with my wedges this year - no distance control - and this worked great all the way through the bag. My driver was a bit off, hit a few pulls, but generally even my misses went pretty straight. I hit it so well I came home and bought the book! Just skimmed it but seemed like a lot of good info. Re-watched some videos today and I think I know why I was hitting the pulls. Heading back to the range shortly!

although most peoples immediate reaction is that the last thing I want is the club going out when im OTT, this actually keeps the right shoulder back and gets the arms moving down correctly. not moving out with the right shoulder like in an OTT swing.

good to hear it helped you, be interested to hear your review of the book.

Exactly! Previously, I was not giving my body the "space" it needed to get the club on a good path, my hands at impact were well above where they were at address. I was making all sorts of compensations just to try to make contact. With this swing, it feels like I have tons of room to come into the ball on the correct path. Great stuff.

Well, he's comparing it to a kid that is trying to demolish the ball to the point where the hands are falling off the grip. The more I see people's swing videos, the more I think most of people's early extension issues starts with an overemphasis on how far one can hit the ball.

I previously had a tendency to come in with the face WIDE open. From Monte's "how the arms work" video, I figured that I need more left arm rotation. My practice is only hitting 50 yards in the backyard and into a net, so I couldn't really tell ball flight. Contact seemed good, but after a while, I abandoned it because it felt very steep.

The way this is presented make a lot of sense and a subtly different. My skytrak is coming in a few days, so I'm eager to work on these feels and get actual feedback.

I tried this feel and worked great for shots on the ground. Could not get it to work with teed driver or 3 wood. Anyone else have similar results or can explain why?
The opposite for me. Driver spot on, most effortless swing ever, distance ok. Irons massive lost in distance, all shots as a low fade. Something wrong here, maybe not enough shoulder turn?!

Have you tried it? Your arms have plenty degrees of freedom to achieve that.

Maybe it's just me, but I think this video of Seung-Yul Noh seems to demonstrate Malaska's teaching in action. He lays it off at the top but as he starts the downswing, you can see his hands coming down and in, whichs throws the clubhead out and around pretty effortlessly.
