Did you challenge Costner to a 7 iron contest?

haha I was too young and nervous to get that bold. I found it interesting, he actually doesn't really like golf. At the time it wasn't one of his favorite hobbies. He just kept participating in the ATT Pro Am because he could and it was good PR. But he didn't know a ton about the game, nor did he truly enjoy it. With that said, Kevin and his now wife Christine could not have been nicer people. Christine especially was just a very down earth person who was a total sweetheart. At the end of the weekend, Kevin's buddy (whom we know and was the connection here) gave me a bag tag that Kevin received at the ATT Pro Am after Tin Cup was released. The name engraved on the tag; 'TIN CUP'. A cool memento to remember the trip by.

I didn't get to play with him at Cypress however. A big storm was rolling in and he decided to bail. We basically sprinted to the tee box to tee off. We ended up playing Cypress without a member or anyone of actual importance. When we got to the first green they sounded the horn. The caddies told us it was up to the players' discretion if they wanted to stop playing or play through it. They told us they were in for the long haul. We ended up playing the first 8 holes in the worst conditions imaginable. It was no warmer than 45* (this was in Feb the week before the ATT), winds had to have been 30+ and the rain was just pelting us. Gore-Tex head to toe and all of us were completely drenched. On the 3rd hole while trying to write down our scores the scorecard literally disintegrated.

Around the 9th hole, the clouds parted, the rain stopped, and the sun peaked through. Winds were still crazy but we got to play the real meat of the course in good conditions. When we got in after the round we popped back in the clubhouse and asked them how much we owed for the round. The pro laughed at us and said 'that round is on the house. We closed the course for the day and couldn't believe you guys stayed out'. We ended up more than doubling the pay for the caddies as they truly gutted it out with us.

The crazy thing about the trip was before the round while we were buying some swag in the pro-shop, Tim Finchem was there meeting with Kevin. I got to meet him and talk to him for a bit. Really nice guy. Was happy to see a youngster with a true passion for the game.
Great Story Bro :)

Very Well Played!!!

I hope that ya had a nice season!!

Curtis Strange (in High School a bunch), Charlie Daniels, Mac Davis, Jack Ingram, McLean Stevenson, Vince Gill, Richard Roundtree (Shaft!!)

These weren't close, personal friends, but I'm in broadcasting, so lots of schmooze outings. I ended up playing with McLean Stevenson (Col. Blake on MASH) several times and he was a warm and funny man.

I found playing golf with "famous people" no different than playing with any other golfer - no business talk, just golf and joking.
You win. Did you play the entire round with the Curtis Mayfield soundtrack in your head?
Every time he hit a drive we'd yell "that shaft is a bad Mofo!"
It would have been rude not to :taunt:

I would have been waiting for him to get a plugged lie in a bunker, just so I could say "Can you dig it?"

I wanna hear more about your round with MJ. When I was an asst pro he played our course twice. I saw him hit balls and a few holes were in sight of the shop. He looked like a solid 8. He just didn't have the mannerisms or action of a good player. Always hear he fudges his scores and is a vanity handicap. What is the first hand account?

MJ was super nice to me as well as people who would randomly walk out and ask for an autograph or a picture. We played at Greystone GC near Birmingham, AL in August 1994 when he was trying to play baseball for the Birmingham Barons. He did'nt play well that day as he had injured his shoulder in a game that week. He could knock the crap out of the ball however.

I should mention he was super nice to everyone as well. He introduced himself to all of us and offered autographs to the staff and the few members that were around both times he played. Probably helped that our club was never very busy and more than 4 members in a room at the same time was considered swamped.

Did he pay?

He used to come to Santa Barbara every year for "Fiesta" and he'd guest bartend at O'Malleys. He went and played with a bunch of people, asking to have a few times ahead and behind blocked off so they'd be undisturbed. He never offered to pay for anything and the members got caught with the bill. He was never asked back. Instead he would go to Rancho San Marcos and play there.

Guests could not pay at the club, member bill back only. Guest fees were pretty inexpensive ($90ish) and members had millions. Paying was never really brought up by anyone, only occasionally would a guest ask and we would just say "your host handles all of the transactions today, have a great time while you are here."

Jordan lived next door to my best friend in Greystone back then. He came over and talked to us and threw the football around several times. He was really nice. I think he was driving a blue 911 at the time. I belonged to Riverchase CC then and he came out there several times to play.

Did your friend live there just across from the 2nd fairway on Chandwyck? I think that's where Jordan lived. Speaking of Riverchase, did you evfer know a gentleman by the name of Austin Cunningham that belonged there?

I didn't play, but walked inside the ropes as the signboy (standard bearer) at the Tampa PODS, Transitions and now Valspar tournament in different years. I walked 18 holes with Chad Campbell, Robert Gamez, Bart Bryant, Charles Howell III, Marc Leischmann, Alex Czeka, Will MacKenzie, Jeff Overton, John Mallinger, Bo Van Pelt, Chez Reavie and Justin Thomas. It was an incredible honor to be chosen to be with them and stand next to them as they hit unbelievable shot after another. Smooooth.

That street sounds familiar. It would have been #3, because we always walked across the street and fished in the pond on #4. Yes, I did know Austin Cunningham, that is a name I hadn't thought of in a long time.

Who was your friend? I left Birmingham in 1996 (for Mobile) but I was honored to be a charter member at Greystone back in the day
